all around mclaren park there is a ring of community members who have been tedving to different parts of their play grounds or trees or patches of land. they have been doing great advocacy around the park, greater resources for the park. and it's really been part of what the legacy of franco mancini has been over the year. i met him in 2008 when i was running for supervisor. i didn't see him after that, but he took a lot of pride in his work, his stewardship of the park. he was pleased to know that there were many people who were running for supervisor in district 8 or district 11 who were park persons. that's how he deemed himself and people who cared about parks as park people. for him mclaren park was a place that he sunk a lot of his energy and a lot of his effort and we have really reaped that effort over the years. so, just wanted to recognize -- franco mancini from friends of mclaren park and how he inspired a number of people to become involved through exploring gifts and features of mclaren park. want to thank him for his work and recognize him here at the board. the rest i'm

exaggerations and now though are said less and less and people say more and more how fabulous mclaren park is. finally, saturday in the park was put on, the series was put on for i believe it was $15,000, but really the work that was done behind it was thousands and thousands of volunteer hours. no one got paid for doing it. what we put in the budget, we made sure the concert series could go on, paying for performance and equipment and all that. but most of all, we have volunteers working dedicated days, saturdays and even before that throughout the year to make it happen. the event featured some really great acts. i was able to go to a couple of the events. i couldn't believe what i was hearing in terms of world class performers playing the blues in jerry garcia amphitheater. we've had cultural events that served our ethnic communities in san francisco, young people as well. i know this year will be our second year that we'll be doing it. it's going to be a great [speaker not understood] to see move forward. i just want to say thank you for your dedication, your work, your involvement in

i'm the president of friends of mclaren park. it is one of the oldest neighborhood community park groups in san francisco. i give a lot of tours through the park. during those tours, a lot of the folks in the group will think of the park as very scary. it has a lot of hills, there's a lot of dense groves. once you get towards the center of the park you really lose your orientation. you are very much in a remote area. there are a lot of trees that shield your view from the urban setting. you would simply see different groves that gives you a sense of freedom, of being outdoors, not being burdened by the worries of city life. john mclaren had said that golden gate park was too far away. he proposed that we have a park in the south end of the city. the campaign slogan was, people need this open space. one of the things that had to open is there were a lot of people who did a homestead here, about 25 different families. their property had to be bought up. so it took from 1928 to 1957 to buy up all the parcels of land that ended up in
