cnn's erin mclaughlin live in london. crash, if anyone has forgotten that, 16 years ago this month. so, where did this allegation come from and why now? >> reporter: hi, martin. at the moment, the metropolitan police simply are not saying. they released a statement saying they are scoping information and assessing its relevance and credibility. they went on to say that this is not a re-investigation and they are not prepared to discuss the matter further. they have not even said what the information they are considering is exactly. however, there are reports in the british media and from a uk publication called "sunday people," saying that this information includes the allegation that the british military was in some ways involved in the death of princess diana and dodi al fayed, all the way back in 1997. that information they say is coming from, according to the "sunday people," a letter that they have been able to see, a seven-page, handwritten letter from the in-laws of a special forces sniper. the letter was written a

erin mclaughlin is joining us to try to make sense of this confusion. what do we know about this letter? >> anderson, according to the british newspaper, "the sunday people," this letter is seven pages long, handwritten by the estranged in-laws of a former british special forces sniper. in that letter, they allege that this sniper told his wife or boasted to his wife that the british s.a.s. was behind the deaths of princess diana and dodi al fayed. now, this information was introduced as evidence in a trial, the court-martialing of this unnamed sniper former's roommate. he apparently was a witness in this trial. unclear that if british military officials knew of this information in 2011, why it's just reaching scotland yard now. scotland yard at the moment is not commenting, anderson. >> it all seems rather dubious to me. it's like the estranged family of this person and the ex-wife said this and the roommate. how seriously are the british authorities taking this? >> at the moment it's unclear, though they're obviously taking it seriously enough to asse

john mclaughlin noted we do oversight hearings. even on the fisa court i would disagree with some of the panelists. they can release some things. they can release how many cases they get, how many are denied, how many are sent back for review. you can have periodic review by other bipartisan commissions that have credibility. you can do it incrementally but it is going to be difficult to swim against the general tide distrust of government. i would also be remiss if i didn't say i could not disagree with anthony romero more that snowden did as a service. i think he did this country and incredible disservice. we are now going to have slightly more transparency and better oversight and that is a good thing. i refused to give mr. snowden credit for that. >> give snowden any credit? >> no. on the oversight piece, i think the procedures we have talked about today are a real example -- it is hard to imagine and oversight regime that could exceed what has been done with fisa and 702, where there was a public debate when the law was change

erin mclaughlin is outside scotland yard.hat amazed me, you'd think the police would say we dismiss this out of hand you can but you they didn't. how seriously are they investigating the claim? >> reporter: this is the first information that scotland yard has assessed for its relevance and credibility since the inclusion of the inquest into princess diana's death in 2008. it's serious enough to assess. the moment not serious enough to reop reopen an investigation. and they're saying this is not part of operation paget, an investigation into conspiracy theories. that investigation concluded that she died as a result of the gross negligence of her driver as well as the surrounding paparazzi. so how this reported seven page handwritten letter by the ex-laws of a former sniper could possibly alter those conclusions, well, that remains to be seen. >> thank you. now, conspiracies about princess diana's death have swirled. it's one of those moments that if you were alive at the time, you remember where you were. i remember i was sta
