joining us live from tel aviv is erin mclaughlin. it is now the time where these hostages are supposed to be released. what's the latest? >> reporter: we have yet to receive any official word that the process has begun. we are hearing from the egyptian state information service providing more clarity in terms of the hostages expected to be released today. according to egyptian state information, 12 thai nationals will also be released in addition to the 13 israeli hostages, women and children. we're also hearing from a senior white house official that americans are not expected to be among the 13 israeli hostages released today. that would include 3-year-old abigail moore adan. we know that a list of the hostages expected to be released has been provided to israeli officials. israeli officials have also provided the palestinians with the names of the palestinians expected to be released today from israeli jails. but the israeli officials are not making the list of hostages public, because hamas is seen to be unreliable, though we und

nbc's er erin mclaughlin is on ground. what do we know about the first group of hostages and how they're doing? >> reporter: we just had an update from an israeli military spokesperson who said that all 13 israeli hostaave now passed their preliminary medical examinations. they're on their way t an air force base where they'll have the opportunity to connect with their loved ones and then from there, fly to five other medical facilities where they'll be able to reunite with their families in person. now, the israeli military spokesperson making the point that there is not a single hostage released today, israeli hostage, that does not have a family member that was either kidnapped on october 7th and is still in gaza or murdered when hamas stormed the kibbutz on october 7th. that is the case for 45-year-old danielle aloni and her daughter, amelia, 6 years old. today her family confirming that they both have been released but also providing the aitional detail that on october 7th danielle and amelia were visiting danielle's

joining us now from tel aviv is nbc's erin mclaughlin. thank you.ve learned today that americans will not be in this first group of 13. what do we know about that? >> reporter: we are waiting for official confirmation this is, in fact, happening. we know what we expect to happen today and that is for 13 israeli hostages, women and children, to be released to the red cross. the red cross is then expected to take those hostages across the rafah border crossing, they'll be handed over to specialized israeli military forces. they'll have a full medical evaluation and then from there be offered the opportunity to call their family members for the first time in some 48 days. that call, according to an israeli official will be supervised by psychologists and social workers. they're really focusing on giving these hostages as much emotional support as possible knowing the trauma that they have been through. once the phone call is complete, then they're expected to be driven to a nearby air force base and flown to five different medical centers for treatment

nbc's eric mclaughlin is -- eric mclaughlin, what are we hearing right now? >> reporter: the picture that we can paint is limited given the near total blackout of communications currently impacting the gaza strip due to a fuel shortage. we have been unable to reach any number of doctors that we've been speaking to over the past few days. what we can say is based on what the israeli military released today. according to an israeli military spokesperson, they raided the al shifa hospital for a second day. israeli special forces going through the hospital complex, building by building, floor by floor, room by room. remember, al shifa complex is a large complex. yesterday, they alleged that they found a number of weapons, as well as intelligence tying those materials to the october 7th attacks. we have been unable to verify the claims of the israeli military. they say they continue the search today, no sign so far of the kind of hub the command node that the israeli military alleges as well as the united states alleges is buried beneath the hospital. again, that

i want to bring in nbc's erin mclaughlin. where do we believe negotiations stand at this hour, and what do we know about the fate of these three israeli hostages? >> reporter: we're just beginning to hear news on today's exchange, the israeli military posting the following, according to the information provided by the red cross two israeli hostages were transferred to them and were on their way to israeli territory. their release is in addition to the list of hostages that are scheduled to be released today. we are expecting ten hostages to be released today. now according to this statement, 12 are actually being released by hamas. we're awaiting word on the other 10. as you mentioned that knees about the bibas' family, heartbreaking for them. the israeli military saying they have notiied the family of this claim coming from hamas's militant wing. so far they have been unable to veri it. the bibas family putting out a statement saying our family is dated on the latest hamas publication. we are waiting for the news to be confi

joining us now live from tel aviv is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. good to see you today. give us a sense. what is the very latest on the ground there? >> reporter: well, jonathan, is is a region collectively holding its breath to see if expectation meets reality. in just under an hour from now, that is when we expect the red cross to bring 13 israeli hostages, women, and children through the rafah crossing into egypt and according to an israeli official, once the hostages are safely in egypt, they will be handed over to the israeli military. specialized military personnel will greet them and begin the identification process as well as they will all undergo full medical evaluations. that according to an israeli official. once that process is complete, then they will be allowed to call their families for the very first time in some 48 days. they will be provided with a video uplink once that phone call is complete, and then according to this israeli official, they will be driven to an air force base in israel and from there, flown to five different medical centers, and it's

>> nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv. we talked last week about what was going on at al shifa. we're seeing fighting around the indonesian hospital. what's happening there? >> reporter: that's right, chris. indonesian hospital in the northern gaza area. according to the palestinian health authority, it was bombarded this morning by israeli forces. they hit the second floor of the indonesian hospital which is the floor where they're taking care of patients. they say the hospital is besieged, surrounded by snipers. now, the israeli military telling a very different story, claiming that hamas militants fired from the hospital towards the military. let's pull up the idf statement. they said the following: overnight trifrts opened fire within the indonesian hospital in gaza toward idf troops operating outside the hospital. in response idf troops directly targeted the specific source of enemy fire. no shells were fired towards the hospital, but i was speaking to a w.h.o. official earlier today and he was telling me medical staff within the indonesian hospital have officially requeste

with us now, erin mclaughlin from tel aviv. and we have erin cohen, and joel rubin, former deputy assistant secretary of state. erin mclaughlin, there was a briefing from israeli government officials, what did you learn? >> well, this official spokesperson for the israeli government said he had nothing specific to announce as yet. pointing to the israeli cabinet meeting as well as the convening of the full israeli government expected in the coming hours. but he did say that if palestinian prisoners are released in exchange for the hostages, that there would be a 24-hour period for any of the israeli victims of those prisoners to come forward to the israeli court to challenge the deal. he also pointed to the fact that many of these hostages have likely absolutely traumatized, especially the children, saying that they fear that many of the children may have been held in these tunnels for 46 days, they're worried that many of the children will not have seen sunlight. now, earlier today, i was messaging with the father of one of th

nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin joins us now. what more do we know about this pause and where do negotiations stand right now? >> reporter: according to a senior arab source telling nbc news the negotiations are currently at a critical stage, according to two diplomats with knowledge of the discusses, what's on the table right now, a potential three-day pause in exchange for aid to be brought into gas what and the release of some of the hostages, it would take one to three days for ten to 15 of the hostages to be released, that would also give hamas according this diplomat enough to locate where all 239 hostages currently are, apparently they do not know, now a spokesperson for the israeli military was asked about this in today's briefing, a spokesperson said that there will be no cease-fire, reiterating israel's position that there will be no cease-fire unless all 239 hostages are released, which is high bar especially if what hamas is saying is true and they don't know where everyone is. >> erin, of course, right now a big conc

nbc's erin mclaughlin, and rough cinch is, in tel aviv. ralph, tell us how the steele nearly fell apart, and what we know about how it was then put back together. >> alicia, this has been a nerve wracking evening in israel. a couple of hours ago, hamas announced that it would delay the release of the hostages. it was slimming on the brakes of disagreement. they accused israel of breaching this deal in two ways. they said, first of all, israel was not allowing aid trucks to get into those devastated regions of northern gaza, where the fighting has been most intense, and israel has been urging palestinian civilians that have left that area, and not been allowing them to return over the course of the cease-fire. it does not want to do anything that would allow them to return home. it has been reluctant to allow aid into that area. the second thing is that hamas saying that israel is failing to abide by a commitment to release palestinian prisoners by order of how long they have been in prison. hamas says, the deal was, the longest serving pal

nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv with details. erin, what's the latest there?reporter: willie, we're now hearing from qatar seen as a key intermediary in these negotiations this morning in doha the prime minister saying he has growing confidence that a deal could be reached and that only minor logistical issues remain. this as a source with knowledge of the negotiations tells nbc news that they are closing in on a deal, but that deal has yet to be finalized and that it could fall apart. meanwhile this morning, the world health organization says that yesterday after the al shifa hospital complex was evacuated, they visited the hospital and described just desperate conditions including a mass grave at the hospital complex entrance as well as waste in the hospital hallways as well as evidence of gunfire and shelling. the world health organization says that it is now working to evacuate the hundreds of patients, hospital staff, including more than 30 critically ill babies that remain inside the hospital. they're looking to evacuate them to hospitals in the south. b

we are going to go first to nbc's erin mclaughlin, who's joining us from tel aviv. aaron, welcome. so, what are you hearing right now about the next set of hostages and palestinian prisoners that are expected to be released sometime today? >> well, alex, we are now hearing of a delay in the exchange for today. hamas, releasing a statement to nbc news, outlining the reasons for the delay, saying they are going to delay releasing the israeli hostages that we have been expecting to be released, really, at any hour. they are citing three different areas that they are alleging israel has violated the terms of this temporary cease-fire agreement. one of them being the aid. now, under the agreement, 200 trucks of aid were supposed to have gone from egypt, through the rafah crossing, into gaza. what hamas is alleging, according to this statement, is simply not enough of that aid has entered gaza, but specifically the hard-hit areas of northern gaza, where tens of thousands of palestinians still live. hamas, also alleging that the israelis are not releasing palestinians in the order that ha

. >>> i want to bring back erin mclaughlin. she joins us from tel aviv., an extraordinary day, emotional day on many levels. bring us up to date on what you know. >> reporter: we are now hearing from some of the families released israeli hostages. we just moments ago heard from the asher family. the wife and two children, they posted on facebook, they are finally here at home. there will be more time to talk about everything. for now, thank you all from bottom of my heart. the support and the warm hug. you can see the pictures of his two children and his wife there. relief, it'sard to describe the relief the families must be feeling right now. this is a kibbutz hard hit. they killed people and kidnapping. according to israeli media, 16 of the 31 children -- almost half taken hostage on october 7th were from this kibbutz. a quarter of this kibbutz was either kidnapped or murdered. now, we are hearing that many of the hostages returned today were from this particular kibbutz. we are waiting -- we will hear more about potential release of hostages. we don't

start right now with nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin, who is in jerusalem for us. erin, let's start with these dramatic pictures we're seeing. what do we know about what's going on right now? >> reporter: well, sam, we've been watching some of the most intense activity over the city of gaza since the war began. we can hear on that feed explosions in the distance. and this comes, as palestinians on the ground inside the city have told us that israeli forces are pushing farther and farther into the heart of the city, with heavy bombardment reported in the areas of any number of hospitals. our team here -- i just got off the phone with dr. marwan absa at that with al shifa hospital. al shifa hospital is the largest hospital in gaza. tens of thousands of palestinians are there seeking shelter. this doctor telling us that since 2:00 in the morning, there has been intense bombing. he's saying that they bombed shifa hospital four times through the day. five people have died. more than 40 injured. three of them are children. and then this doctor says maybe 20 of the injure

on foot inside gaza, while missile strikes land near hospitals, we're gonna go right nbc's erin mclaughlin, joining us from jerusalem. erin, welcome. what can you tell us about this dire situation at the al-shifa hospital, and was that reports that israeli forces are closing in on the hospitals there? >> alex, as the israeli military is pushing further and further into gaza city, according to the palestinian red crescent, at least four of the main hospitals in gaza or areas of intense bombardment that includes the al-shifa hospital, which is the main hospital in gaza city. where tens of thousands of palestinians are sheltering. they've been speaking to doctors inside the hospital, they describe a dire and desperate situation, essentially saying that the hospital has stopped its basic functions. due to a power outage in the icu in the pediatric unit reporting that at least two patients have died as a result of that power outage, including an infant, they're lacking the basics their water medicine and food, take a listen to what what one surgeon inside the hospital had to say. >> > yeah, sho

joining us now from tel aviv, nbc's erin mclaughlin. thank you for being with us.srael's operations in gaza stand this morning? >> reporter: well, according to a doctor inside of the al shifa hospital, the israeli military was still operating inside the complex today. we managed to reach him. it has been difficult to reach the doctors inside of al shifa. we managed to get through to the director of the burns unit. he described this desperate situation playing out in the hospital. he said there is very little fuel, very little electricity. he said the israeli military did provide some food and water to those inside the hospital. there is about 600 patients shielding inside the hospital as well as staff and internally displaced people. now, i asked him about the allegations from the israeli military. they have been searching the complex. so far they said they found a number of weapons as well as what appears they allege to be the entrance to a tunnel. i asked him about the allegation that hamas has been exploiting the hospital for its own use. take a listen to what h

nbc's erin mclaughlin is live from tel aviv. that is the question at the heart of what a lot of people are talking about. is there proof from the idf that there are hamas tunnels, hamas headquarters under al-shifa? where does that stand? >> reporter: well, chris, it's first worth pointing out that we're limited in terms of what we can say. the picture that we can paint in terms of what's happening at al-shifa hospital right now, a near communications blackout is being reported impacting what appears to be the entire gaza strip after pal tell, which is the main telecommunications provider for gaza ran out of fuel for its backup generators, posting on facebook, there is a quote, complete disrfter the fuel entry has been banned and all backup power sources have been exhausted to operate the main elements of the network. so we have been unable to reach any number of doctors that i have been talking to over the past few days to get their take on what is happening inside the hospital, what we know of what is going on right now is limi

we do now have aaron mclaughlin, everyone. those arid sirens have stopped there in tel aviv, we're glad you're safe, so let's get to what i want to ask you which is what you're hearing at the latest military actions. reports of fighting, specifically, near a hospital in gaza city. >> yeah, of the threat, alex. there was fierce fighting according to the palestinian red crescent around the area of the al-quds hospital in gaza city, it's one of the main hospitals in gaza, according to the palestinian red crescent. there was israeli artillery fire in the area, intense bombardment, israel's israeli airstrikes. one of the air strikes hit a bill dane 15 meters away from the entrance of the hospital, damaging the hospital as well as injuring some of the palestinians who were taking refuge inside of the hospital. now the israeli military, about, there has not commented on any of that activity today. we had a team on the ground, inside gaza city, that try to reach al-quds hospital today. they were unable to do so because of the violence

. >>> joining me now is nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin who is live in tel aviv, israel. it's nice to see you. we just learned, just learned that one american might be among those hostages which are released today. what have you heard? >> yeah, that's right, katie. a u.s. official told nbc news that they have reason to believe that one of the american hostages could be part of today's hostage exchange. the white house in the past has pointed to three americans possibly being released as part of this overall deal, this four-day cease-fire, two women and one child, a four-year-old little girl. no other specifics were provided by this particular u.s. official but it's worth underscoring the fragility of this situation, especially when you consider what happened yesterday in terms of the process, hamas suddenly announcing an hours long delays, citing this litany of complaints. chief among them was that not enough aid was getting up to a northern gaza. this entire region was waiting to see if the -- the exchange did happen. 13 israeli hostages were released for 39 palestinians

nbc's erin mclaughlin is joining us from tel aviv, and our monica alba is in washington. so erin, what do we know about these two hostages who were just released? >> reporter: we know from the israeli military that they are currently with the red cross. the red cross then takes them through the rafah crossing into egypt where they are then transferred to israeli forces who bring them into hospitals inside of israel to be reconnected with their families. we do not have their identities as yet. that information has not been provided by the family forum. but this is another sigh of relief for the region. there was a point this morning where it looked like this exchange might not happen after israeli officials gave hamas a 7:00 a.m. deadline to provide the list of hostages for the day. it seems that that deadline was met and the exchange now, of course is going forward, but it does highlight just how fragile this process is. this as the cease fire had been extended for just 24 hours. prior to that, the extension was 48 hours. so many diplomats in the region saying that there
