we spoke to roger mcnamee who said biden has no choice. he cannot avoid tech reform.he question is what it looks like. what are signals we got from biden on the campaign trail? i know he took some actions on facebook, made some critical remarks, but it was not necessarily a distinct fear. austin: yes. it was not as concrete or aggressive as the elizabeth warren wing of the party in terms of talking about breaking up big tech companies. biden talked generally about the arrogance that silicon valley has. he really focuses a lot of his criticism on what he calls abuses of power by social media platforms, reserving a lot of ire for mark zuckerberg and facebook. the most specific thing he talked about was him supporting a repeal of section 230, which is the legal shield that protects internet companies from liability of content published on those platforms. so, yeah, the question remains though, will that be something they actually pursue more seriously in the coming months with covid-19 being such a focus of the administration? or will that take in the longer to get to? l

we heard roger mcnamee saying they're as responsible as other platforms.ttle bit about this, saying starting today any channels posting new videos with false claims in violation of our policies will now receive a strike and so forth. are they going to be under more pressure >> i do think all of these companies are going to be under more pressure, kelly to the point of your last question, i think what's really important here is these are companies, they can set their own rules. they are not public utilities. they can set their own rules what's important is they show that they enforce those rules. consistently what they're showing -- what facebook is showing with this move today is that president trump is so much in violation of its rules that they believe this is a necessary step in order to secure the safety of the platform what i think we'll see going forward is, perhaps, more pressure on these companies to make sure they're enforcing the rules fully. it's hard in whack-a-mole situations to pull down content instantaneously. youtube, facebook, instagram h

roger mcnamee joins me now. you're the author of zuct, waking up to the facebook catastrophe.ing with twitter. what do you think of twitter's move? >> so, pamela, i think the key thing to keep in mind is that inciting insurrection against one of the branches of government, in this case the congress, at an event where the vice president and the next two people in the chain of succession to the president were all in attendance, a violent insurrection, that that is the greatest crime any president could possibly commit. i mean, in the old days it almost certainly would have been a capital crime. the notion that we're focused on what he's saying about twitter in my mind is actually misplaced. this could not be a more serious offense if it tried. and i think twitter banning trump is literally the bare minimum that they could have done and these other tech giants taking action against the enablers of what trump did here is literally the bare minimum. our democracy is hanging on by a thread. and internet platforms have played a huge role in putting us here and it's really long past t
