let's bring in nbc bay area terry mcsweeney who arrived for us on the scene. what can you tell us? i see the freeway behind you shut down there. >> reporter: yeah, it is shut down. i can tell you there are cars and car parts, northbound 880, for about 100 yards leading up to the stevenson boulevard exit. looking behind me, you see the fire trucks, chp is still there. there's an ambulance there as well, a number of emergency vehicles. you can see the lights flashing and you may be able to see some of the debris from the numerous cars. chp telling me somewhere between six and eight vehicles involved. there are still three vehicles on the freeway. they have not been taken out of here yet. they had to deal with the two dead and a number of people injured as well as a result of this crash. it happened about 9:30. chp not giving out much information about the age also of the people involved. they haven't even really begun to put together how this could have happened, six to eight vehicles crashing. some of them, as i mentioned, still out there on 880. what this is doing, we mentioned it

nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney is live in the oakland hills with a story new at 11:00. a lot of people say they felt jolted. >> reporter: yeah, it wasn't that big. a 3.5 earthquake was felt and heard by people all across the bay area tonight. the u.s. geological survey telling me they received reports from about 18,000 people that the ground moved tonight. >> it sounded like a freight train was coming by. >> reporter: emi was making dinner when that terrible sound let her know earthquake. she says the shaking lasted only about five seconds. >> it wasn't too bad. i think it was more the sound that was kind of jarring than the actual shaking itself. >> reporter: the usgs says it was on the northern part of the hayward fault, epicenter just east of oakland. people felt it across the bay area. >> about 15, 20 miles or so. there are reports out about 60, 80 miles out. >> reporter: not a big quake but memorable for savannah nelson, visiting from illinois. >> just heard a loud shake. it lasted maybe five seconds. it was super loud. i've never been through an earthquake before,

ti i'm terry mcsweeney. >> almost a year after a 10-year-old boy was launched off an east bay water slide and injured, people got the chance to check out the new changes to that slide today. >> marianne favro live at the wave park in dublin with a look at these changes. >> reporter: terry and anoushah, if you look behind me, this green water slide is where a 10-year-old boy was injured last may. it's called the emerald plunge. while no structural changes have been made since the accident, the water flow has changed, and the city says the slide is safe. today the emerald plunge is back open as dozens of people went down the 48-foot-high waterslide. they also tested out the water slide next to it, called the dublin screamer. both slides were closed on opening day last may after a 10-year-old boy was launched off the emerald plunge and injured. the city of dublin runs the wave waterpark, and a spokeswoman today says after months of testing, the slides are
