i'm terry mcsweeney. firefighters bracing for a difficult time over the next 24 hours. could be dangerous. live look right now walnut creek. meteorologist rob maietta has been telling us about the potential for lightning and now it's crunch time. what's the latest? >> we are seeing the high-level clouds moving in. you saw it over mt. diablo. here is the fire danger, the temperature and the humidity. it's 95 degrees in livermore, humidity 18(%. if you have elevated thunderstorms that don't produce rain at ground level but bring the lightning, you see how dry things are at the surface. the satellite and radar shows you that we are starting to see the high clouds on approach to the bay area. the showers for now are still in the central valley near fresno through san luis obispo county. this line has not had a history of producing lightning across the valley. different towards the sierra, more lightning across the southern and central sierra. this area of rotation just off the shore here of southern california coast, this upper level disturbance will lift north tward overni

i'm terry mcsweeney. fireworks safety. a concern every fourth of july, but during a drought, those concerns are skyrocketing. we have team coverage. let's begin with nbc bay area sergio quintana in pittsburgh, tonight, where contra costa fire inspectors are on patrol. sergio. >> they are on patrol for illegal fireworks and just to be clear, terry, all unty was pass bit earlier, this year. but clearly, people are still using them. as the sun set here in pittsburgh, a little bit earlier, we could hear the fireworks and even see them going off. even so close to this fire station, that's the reason why fire marshals and fire inspectors are out on patrol, tonight. >> so tonight, we have all our investigators. we have called them back. they're all working tonight. and we have up-staffed extra personnel. we have a task force that we have put together. >> reporter: already, tonight, fire crews were called out to respond to a small fire that's suspected to have been started by fireworks. the contra costa county fire protection dist

i'm terry mcsweeney. we want to send things straight over to nbc bay area meteorologist rob mayeda. he's tracking all of this and it sounds so much like the disaster we had last summer. >> the combination is there where we're watching a lot of moisture coming in that has the potential for lightning and lightning-sparked fires. right now that moisture is moving out of california, approaching southern california, and that monsoon of moisture will be right here during the day tomorrow. we'll see these bands of clouds moving in during the morning and right around this time towards tomorrow morning, we'll see the best chance of these showers, which may involve a slight chance of the thunder off to our south and to the east. keep in mind, around the bay area and in much of california, we're seeing record dry conditions, enhanced by drought. from the sierra back here towards the bay area, the north bay and east bay. so on top of those conditions, we will be seeing these red flag conditions for evaluations above 1,000 feet, getting started at 5:00 this evening, until about 5:00 on monday. n

terry mcsweeney has more. >> reporter: covid cases are rising nationwide and locally. rise in cases is forcing counties to adjust, with napa county today joining seven other bay area counties in strongly recommending masking when indoors. the next step could be the return of a mask mandate. >> i think that we would be looking at hospitalizations to see if that increases significantly. >> reporter: but in solano county, the policy follows state guidelines new york mask for no one outdoors. >> the cases are occurring now for the last two weeks primarily because of july fourth behavior. so a masking mandate for indoors for shopping and retail and restaurants doesn't make difference. the disease is being transmitted in people's homes. >> reporter: los angeles county is already mandating masks indoors there. dr. rutherford does not see the bay area going that far, though he sees value in masking. saz slow transmission among people who are unvaccinated. and b, limits spillover of breakthrough cases to people who have been vaccinated. >> reporter: and now comes covid's next c
