terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. terry. thank you. tonight we are hearing from friends of one of the college students killed in that deadly crash in piedmont just before thanksgiving. that crash happened around 3 a.m. last wednesday. a tesla cybertruck carrying four people crashed and caught fire. shawn dixon, jack nelson and krista tsukahara were killed. one person survived, all graduated from piedmont high school. shawn dixon was a student athlete at usc and a member of the lambda chi alpha fraternity. friends on campus remembered him at a gathering on greek row, finding groups to go off campus, go to the beach and go surfing, or go rock climbing. he was always trying to find other people who liked the same stuff he did. police say speed was a factor in that crash, but say it's too early to know whether the cybertruck malfunctioned. the initial investigation didn't show any signs that the truck's battery sparked the fire. the nhtsa is now conducting a federal investigation as well. not backing down and taking it to the people. the s

i'm terry mcsweeney and i'm gia vang. we begin with an emergency on the san francisco bay. rescuers rushed into action to save 18 boaters after their boat capsized in the oyster point channel this morning. here's nbnbc bay ar's marianne favro with more details from oyster point in south san francisco. the mayday call came in at 840 this morning to the coast guard, saying that a wave capsized a boat and 18 people were in the water. with the help of a u.s. coast guard helicopte, the harbor patrol swiftly rescued 15 people in the oyster point channel, but there were still three people in the chilly bay. they were rescued by the brisbane harbormaster and police department. the oyster point harbormaster says all 18 plucked out of the water were part of a rowing club, and they were all in a 14 foot long platform kayak when it capsized. it happens a lot. there's a lot of kayakers that come out and they underestimate the tides, the weather. captain steve gutierrez runs deadliest cast sport fishing charter at oyster point. he says it's not uncommon to see kayakers in trouble. i myse

and i'm terry mcsweeney. tonight, new charges for a notorious kidnaping suspect in the bay area.ew mueller, who was convicted in the 2015 so-called gone girl kidnaping in vallejo, is now accused of two other home invasions in the south bay 15 years ago. nbc bay area's ian cull was in the courtroom as mueller faced a judge. matthew mueller stood in the doorway and behind his attorney for most of his arraignment in san jose today. cuffed and holding papers, only peering out to show his face once he's already serving time for the 2015 kidnaping of denise huskins in vallejo. that received extensive international media attention and was profiled in the netflix series american nightmare. police had accused huskins of making up the story until mueller was arrested three months later and eventually convicted of kidnaping and assaulting her. now, the santa clara county da says they've connected mueller to two crimes in the south bay from 2009, thanks to modern dna testing on evidence. we're very fortunate that this is a case that was continued to be worked on by many individuals and many

i'm terry mcsweeney and i'm gia vang. lecturers left in limbo after san francisco state makes job cuts. it comes as universities across california grapple with declining enrollment and budget shortfalls. nbc bay area's marianne favro spoke with one lecturer who has been let go. adjuncts like me. adjunct lecturer sean connolly says he'll soon lose the job he's had for 17 years in the humanities and comparative literature department at san francisco state. he says it's a double blow. he'll lose his health insurance and more. i put so much of myself in my, my, my work life into this and, you know, i think like a lot of other people, i kind of feel a little bit at a loss. he's not alone. he says many other adjunct lecturers have also been let go. a university spokesperson says lecturer hiring is based on student enrollment and confirms some lecturers will not be rehired in spring, adding quote, as enrollment has declined. unfortunately, lecturer faculty are being significantly impacted as there are fewer sections to teach, es

i'm terry mcsweeney and i'm gia vang. we begin tonight with the nation mourning the loss of former president jimmy carter. the 39th president died today at the age of 100. james earl carter jr, who always went by jimmy, was born in the small town of plains, georgia. he personified the american dream, serving in the navy before making a success of his family's peanut farm. carter's political career began as a georgia state senator. then he became governor, but his presidency was marred by economic recession and the iranian hostage crisis. he lost in a landslide to ronald reagan in 1980. afterwards, he began a new career helping build homes for the poor in america. in 2015, he was diagnosed with cancer. he had been in hospice care since february 2023. he now survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. flags at the white house were lowered to half staff in honor of former president carter. president biden has ordered a national day of mournining on january 9th. today, mr. biden spoke from the
