employer would want to hire me. but i started applying all around the place. and finally i was doing, of all things, a beauty panel gent for black girls -- pageant for black girls that i considered my civil rights work because it was my fight against miss america that denied our girls the right to participate. so we had started our own pageant. i presented the girls on television, and a writer from a daily paper wrote that surely somewhere in television there must be a place for belva davis. and i acted as though that was carved in concrete. and just applied to everybody and everything until finally in 1966 i read a story about a wonderful republican woman who loved ronald reagan and had said that if he was elected, she would quit her anchor job and go and work for him. the day he was elected, i called her boss, and i told him i wanted to apply for her job. and he said, what do you mean you want to apply for her job? i said, well, she's going to be leaving. why do you think she's going to be leaving? many i read it

next thing i know, they were dragging me off the bus, dragging me to the police car. [inaudible] "what is wrong with this black? we need to take her to jail." "no, no, no!" next thing i know, they were taking my photographs and fingerprints. dan, i was locked behind this -- then, i was locked behind this cell. two weeks later, people were outraged. women could not believe it -- a child drug off a bus? violated segregation law, but they dropped two of the charges because i think they thought we were trying to challenge the case, take it higher. [inaudible] he actin' crazy. i just stopped looking people in the eye and kept to myself. felt like an outsider. i don't want to be humiliated. [inaudible] [applause] >> that is the piece that people are finally learning about -- that is the case that people are finally learned about, but more important is the case that happened a year later. a federal court case was filed challenging the segregated buses. the plaintiffs -- on may 11, that hearing began in 1956. the attorney, her lawyer when she was 15, and who did not win that

this means a lot to me. never thought or dreamed that i would be honored in this grand city hall when i came over to the united states in 1993, and this is truly an honor that i will never forget. and i think actually i am getting on it, and it is in my name but actually belongs to all the people i have invited here. first, my husband. i would like to thank him for being my encyclopedia, my advisor, my personal chef, and house cleaner. this is not going to happen to me. as i was going down, it cannot happen to me. drugs do not discriminate. they do not care who you are. or what you are doing or where you are going or any of that. you open the door, they will come in. i had this conversation with el. for me, i am one of the national drug spokespersons for the united states and i go over the country and speak at rehab graduations, at rehabs, hospitals, and churches, i speak all over the country. when i am speaking on the drug subject, i tell everybody, i do not know what your method for getting yourself off of drugs is, i do not know what rehab your @. i speak at alcoholics anonymous meetings and i never drank but i speak there because the judges who call may have me speak to people who are afflicted and addictive. i tell them all. alcoholics anonymous is the the thing where you go to the meetings and the people get up and say, i am john brown and i am an alcoholic. they are recovering. they're not drunk or anything. the and tell their story. i am mary simpson. i get up and say, i am smokey robin

, and she gave me a backhand slap. from then on, i knew that i was not supposed to talk to a white child or interact with a white child. that was a very early age. i was maybe around five or six years old. then, my mother explained to me about -- and words stuck in my mind -- "white folks." another occasion happened to me in a five and ten-cent store. i have to tell you this to put it in perspective. it was not just march 2. it was all the bad experiences that i have had as a child at that young age that i should not have had to have gone through. there was a lunch counter. i still tell everybody i love the smell of that by then 10 -- that five and ten. i looked over and saw these little white kids sitting on coca-cola -- sipping on coca- cola. they were eating double-decker'' sandwiches, and my mother was looking away, and i sneaked over there. i knew she would come over there and buy me one. she came back and grabbed me by the back of my collar and pulled me -- she said, "i told you, that is for white folks." you lea

and so for me, it was a natural thing to want to do. when you did that project, did you come away with any new sense of death? i mean, i--i think a good number of people would walk into a morgue and be repelled. did you learn anything in the process of doing this work? well, i learned a couple of things. first of all, i learned that white people turned-- turn black and brown when-- when they're submerged in the water for any length of time. i photographed several people who, on appearance, look like black people who were actually white people who had been in the water too long. you know, there was a woman that i once photographed. the image is titled, jane doe killed by police. and basically, this is a woman who had been in a stolen car. some shots were fired. the police--the police fired some shots, killed her, and the driver got away. so she was never identified. so when i got to the-- when i got to photograph her, she had been in the morgue for two months already. and she's a brown-skinned woman, but there's white skin underneath the

[laughter] so they're hugging me, and they're taking tire picture -- their picture with me, and i felt a little strange. so i started talking to one of the kids, and one young man i said, okay, what elementary school did you go to? and i said, do you think that that school prepared you for the rigors here at souza? and he said, well, it's really different. i said, show? he said -- how so? he said, well, the teachers here teach. and i said, okay, what does that mean? he said, well, they really teach us to think outside the box. [laughter] and this is a sixth grader who's saying this, right? so it was interesting just to sort of hear from the kids' perspective. they were all telling me what they thought about both their elementary school experience, how it differed from their middle school experience, they could articulate what the differences were and how they felt, you know, differently coming to school every day. so when you hear it from that intereducative -- perspective, it just gives you a different -- >> okay, point taken.
