our meagan fitzgerald has that story. >> reporter: this isn't the first time we've seen a hoverboard catch on fire. this one happening on tuesday at a mall kiosk in washington state. >> it's on fire! >> reporter: and scary moments in alabama when a guy was riding the device when it ignited and this is what was left of a hoverboard that caught on fire in gaithersburg. >> the hover board ignited while it was being charged and it rolled over to the bed and ignited the bedding in the bedroom. >> reporter: kevin frazier is the battalion chief for the fire department. he said overcharging the lithium ion batteries could have caused the hoverboard to ignite, but he says in general electronics can cause a lot of fires, but they can also be avoided. >> be very cautious when you're charging these items. make sure they're not charged unattended and do not leave them uncharged overnight where a fire can start and it be undetected. >> reporter: their safety tips to prevent fires from starting, but when it comes to fire boards, some consumers say the risk just isn't worth it. >> it's too dangerous

>> reporter: -- meagan fitzgerald. news 4. >> and in virginia police say they have had a number of calls and e-mails, one as far away as california, all to help a homeless man accused of building an elaborate cave in a park. yosue rios is accused of digging a cave in van dyck park. police have filled in that structure and they're defending their charges against rios say someone could have fallen into the cave. they also tell us because rios faces charges in both fairfax and arlington, they don't have release date for anyone interested in helping him. >>> a lawsuit challenging the district's strict gun law is still being considered, but now it looks like another judge will oversee the case. last spring a federal judge from new york halted enforcement of the district's gun ban. today, an appeals court ruled that judge did not have the jurisdiction or authority to make a decision on this case. today's move has no effect on the current state of gun laws in the city. it just means the long-running legal challenge continues.

news 4's meagan fitzgerald joins us just outside of that restaurant. meagan? >> reporter: wendy, we had an opportunity to speak with staff sergeant peter taub's mother, arlene today. she says he leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter and a wife who is pregnant with their second child. as you can imagine, the family is absolutely devastated tonight. they've owned this restaurant behind us here, it's called bush and pops, arlene owns it with her husband who's pete's step dad and his brother as well. they've owned it for the last three years. they built a loyal clientele, many of whom read about this devastating news on facebook. so as soon as they heard, they came here, they dropped off flowers and cards to express their condolences. the news of what happened to 30-year-old staff sergeant peter taub quickly traveled. on facebook, pete's mom, arlene, wrote, "my son, chef jon's brother, staff sergeant peter taub, was one of six killed yesterday in afghanistan." and on door on their shop, an american flag is posted above a note which says the same. it mentions that th

meagan fitzgerald is live in spotsylvania county where she spoke to the victim's parents. >> reporter: heather ciccone's parents say it's hard to believe their 21-year-old daughter is gone. she left the house at 9:00 sunday evening because a friend's car broke down. she told herrer mother she would be back but never returned. authorities got a call for a suspicious car in this driveway on piney branch road. they found 21-year-old heather ciccone dead in the driver's seat, dead from an upper gunshot wound. hours later around 2:00 a.m., investigators were knocking on their door letting them know their daughter was murdered. >> why would you take my little girl away from me? >> it's hard to put in perspective. you know, until it really happens to you. >> reporter: now, spotsylvania county sheriffs deputies tell us they are following up on several leads they've received over the last two days but they are asking anyone with information about this case to contact their department right away. coming up at 5:00, what heather ciccone's parents want the whole public, the whole community, every

meagan fitzgerald got some new charging documents. meagan? >> reporter: what we're learning is that the suspect's wife called 911 and told them that the victim was drunk and was threatening them. moments later francisco trujillo pulled out a gun and shot the man in the living room and it's just a few doors down from where we are and we had an opportunity to speak with neighbors who met with the family and they tell us we're they're shocked. the sights and sounds of christmas are everywhere. we're looking at christmas, yes, they are and the sounds many woke up to just after midnight monday morning were unexpected and unusual. >> i thought, what the heck is going on? why am i awake? i rolled over and went back to sleep. while debbie baker was sleeping. montgomery county police were investigating a murder down the street from her home. police say 35-year-old francisco trujillo was hosting a holiday party when trujillo opened fire, killing perez in the living room. >> cindy has known the trujillo family for more than two years. francisco has two

meagan fitzgerald is there now and do the police know who they're looking for? >>. >> reporter: wendy, they gave us a vague description and they told us the suspect was wearing dark clothing and he had a mask on and he went into the cell phone and computer store behind us here and the employee confronted that suspect and that's when the employee got shot. if you take a look around us, there are a lot of shots in the area and shoppers who say they're concerned that there's a gunman who is still on the run. >> fairfax county police got the call at 11:30 this morning when they arrived at the computer and cellular store on beacon hill road they found the employee suffering from a gunshot wound. police sent hours speaking to witnesses inside the store and at the 7-eleven next door. investigators say the armed gunmen took off near richmond highway where folks are doing their last-minute shopping. >> it's a calculated gamble with crazy human beings and hoping you don't run into them. we're told that employee is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. police are

i'm meagan fitzgerald. we begin tonight in northwest d.c. where a grenade forced roads and businesses to shut down. someone brought that grenade to the police department at the corner of georgia avenue and a peabody street. officers quickly evacuated nearby businesses including a walmart. news 4's darcy spencer is live at the scene in northwest. >> good evening, meagan. it also prompted the evacuation of the police station any this is it behind me. the fourth district police headquarters in washington had to be temporarily evacuated because of this incident. it's important to note that police have now told us that this was not a live grenade. it did not pose a safety hazard, but at that point they really didn't know what they were dealing with. so these evacuations were ordered out of an abundance of caution. police tell us that someone brought the device, this grenade to the fourth district about 10:30 this morning to turn it over to police. the device, important to note, did not go inside the building and it stayed in the person's car. the

. >> meagan fitzgerald, news 4. >>> a man in maryland will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a man who texted his girlfriend. a montgomery county judge today gave pavel ivanov a life sentence. police say he stabbed brian hall in a jealous rage back on july 4, 2014. prosecutors say the surveillance video shows ivanov carrying a trash bag filled with bloody clothes after the attack that happened in galthersburg. >>> a montgomery count i police officer is in the hospital tonight after getting hit by a suspected drunk driver. this happened during a slow-speed chase overnight. that pursuit went into a neighborhood and the suspect pulled into a driveway on ggranchester place. that man fired a shot at the driver, but missed. >> from what my neighbor tells me. they drove out through her yard here and i guess they went along behind the houses, between the houses and the fence and then came out. >> the suspect crashed into a pole not far from the neighborhood. he tried to run, but police caught him and he's facing dui and assault charges. the police officer is expected to be okay. >>>

homicide detectives are working this case and our meagan fitzgerald is there and in about ten minutes she'll bring us more on the shooting after d.c. police and city leaders made a big announcement on crime today. >> it was a murder carried out during a fit of jealousy. now the man convicted will serve life in prison. that sentence handed down today to pavel ivanov. prosecutors say ivanov discovered his girlfriend was romantically involved with hall and arranged to meet him in a gaithersburg park and then stabbed him 15 times. surveillance video caught him hauling off bloody clothes after the attack. >>> the first officer being tried in the death of freddie gray took the stand today. he tried to explain why he didn't put a seat belt on gray and why he didn't call for a medic. news 4's chris gordon joins us live with the big moments today. chris? >> and jim, in the past hour, a spectator was forcibly removed from the courtroom, baltimore sheriff's officers took the man who was trying to disrupt the proceedings out of the courthouse. william porter was testifying on the witness stand. >

reporting in arlington, meagan fitzgerald, news 4. >> one of the most celebrated religious figures ofury will become a saint. today the vatican officially attributed a second miracle to mother teresa. that clears the way for the catholic church to canonize her. the miracles attributed to her happened after her death in 1997 and both involve the otherwise unexplained healing of people who had deadly diseases after prayers were made to mother teresa. the nun also won the nobel peace prize and global acclaim for her work with the sick and the poor throughout her lifetime. no word yet on when her canonization will be celebrating. the diocese of arlington released a statement calling her an example of gentle strength and unwavering commitment to uphold the dignity of every human person. >> she certainly left her mark. the phone call came out of the blue and it landed a former basketball star in an unexpected place. now he's a coach at gallaudet university. he's doingas much learning as he is teaching. >> that's better. >> as a player, was there nothing unfamiliar about the basketball court

meagan fitzgerald tells us what the homeowner said to police just before his arrest. >> reporter: police say a h holiday party, the victim was drunk when he was shot and killed inside the living room. these aren't the type of lights neighbors expected to see. >> i thought what the heck is going on and why am i awake. montgomery county police were investigating a murder. investigators say 35-year-old francisco frank trujillo hosted a holiday party at his home sunday night. police say frank and his guest mario perez got into an argument. according to an arrest report frank's wife called 911 said her husband's friend mario was really drunk and had threatened us. she also told dispatchers, quote, mario had been shot by her husband frank. when police arrived they say mario was found shot to death in the living room. trujillo along with his wife and another woman were also inside. the arrest report says before trujillo was arrested he said that the victim was shot in the chest and that he was, quote, sorry. >> that's just insane. i -- what causes people to do stuff like that? that's horrible.

news 4 has team coverage and we start with meagan fitzgerald. >> we want to give you the names of the two people who nbc news has just confirmed were killed in that attack. they are 47-year-old michael s weslow, a father of six. and 52-year-old nicholas fallacino, another health inspector. sources are telling nbc news that syed farook had been radicalized and he was in touch with people in the l.a. area that expressed jihadist views. farook was talking with people overseas who were persons of interest to u.s. intelligence and they're looking for possible accomplices. two handguns and two assault rifles which were found in the suv farook and his wife were driving, but we are told his rifle was bought by farook. these suspects were heavily armed. we're talking more than 1500 rounds of ammunition in the car and more than 2,000 rounds at farook's home. there were also more than a dozen pipe bombs and the bomb at the scene of the attack was rigged with a remote detonator, but it was never triggered. >> clearly, they were equipped and they could have continued to do another attack. we inter

meagan fitzgerald is live in spotsylvania county with the emotional words from her parents. meagan? >> reporter: yeah, you know, investigators tell us that leads have been pouring in since yesterday that they've been following up on. they've conducted a lot of interviews, we're told, but they say that it's the crime scene here that's key in this investigation. as you mentioned, we had an opportunity to speak to this girl's parents. they say they're hoping that the work investigators are doing now will help bring an arrest about soon. >> she was a selfie queen. she loved taking them. >> reporter: a collage of memories is what stacey and december this are left with after their 21-year-old daughter was murdered. >> she was the sun shashine of everyone's life. >> reporter: she left sunday night to help a friend. she told her mom she would be back. hours later deputies showed up instead. >> right now it hasn't really sunk in. it has, but it hasn't. >> reporter: investigators said they found heather in the driver's seat of her car parked in this driveway on piney branch road. sheriff pier
