let's get to news4's meagan fitzgerald. she's been at the zoo all day. meagan? >> reporter: wendy, we're told this was a chlorine explosion which happened inside a mechanical building, and that's right next to where the otters and the beavers live. d.c. fire officials say they have left the scene but it's still very active with hazmat crews on scene as well as smithsonian officials, but we're told no one was hurt and all of the animals have been checked out and are doing okay. the alarms rang out for hours on the path way to the american trail which was taped off while d.c. firefighters and hazmat crews worked to clean up and investigate a chlorine explosion. >> a chlorine, left that area per safety protocol and following that there was a loud bang. >> reporter: pamela baker is the spokesperson for the zoo. she says the contractor was doing his routine job in the facility moments before the explosion happened. first responders evaluated the employee but says he's doing fine. meanwhile, tourists continue to enjoy the zoo with what some are calling a minor interru

with more on the charges the brothers are facing, let's check in with meagan fitzgerald live at police headquarters. >> reporter: these brothers face a long list of charges as you can imagine including second-degree murder and attempted first degree murder. and we're told it's likely that additional charges could soon follow. we also understand that it's possible that these brothers could appear in court as early as today. now, the mug shot of the brothers was just released yesterdayed by prince george's county police showing alleged gunmen 22-year-old michael ford, his brother elijah and malik. investigators say the entire incident was planned. michael ford wanted to commit suicide by cop they say and it was his brother that drove him to the police station. but what is even more alarming here, that investigators say one of the brothers was recording as michael started shooting at civilians driving by and firing at a press conference yesterday, chief stawinski said it was the heroic actions and bravery of officer colson which allowed officers to take on the shooter. >> detective colson

meagan fitzgerald joins us live in gaithersburg now. meagan, disturbing doesn't begin to sum it up. >> reporter: absolutely, chris. us that the suspect admitted to sexually abusing this 6-year-old girl when he was arrested on monday. this all happened in the parking lot behind us here. a mother came here to pick up two day workers to help break down some furniture inside her home, but police say while that could be the cheaper pay to go, it's extremely dangerous. it was last wednesday evening when montgomery county police say two workers were picked up from the parking lot of this 7-eleven along north frederick road. 44-year-old jose compos gonzalez was in a bed breaking down furniture when he inappropriately touched a 6-year-old girl. after they left, the child told the mother what happened and she called 911. >> it is not i will lee but it's not the best practice. when you hire somebody to come into your home, you have no idea who is coming to your home. you don't know what the background is. >> reporter: now, police are asking anyone

. >> meagan fitzgerald just getting to the scene in northwest washington. what you can tell us at this point? >> reporter: well, good morning. actually the news came in just before 6:00 this morning that there was some sort of a water main break inside howard university hospital behind us here causing flooding and forcing some patients to be relocated. now, we know that d.c. water was on scene. they successfully turned off the problematic valve, but of course there are other valves that are giving wr hospital here. so we know water is still in use. there are no issues there. but they are trying to figure out what happened, what went wrong and they're trying to fix the valve. we know d.c. fire is on scene. of course crews working to clean up the mess and again as we mentioned, try to get to the bottom of how this happened. but at will this point, we don't have any confirmed reports that any patients are in danger, but we know they have been relocated. we will stay on this. we're making calls. we'll have more information and as we do, we'll send it out on our

meagan fitzgerald learns us w meagan? >> reporter: according to court documents, the suspect, kevin reynolds, was physically abusive to his ex-girlfriend tarekka jones. it even says he pulled a gun on her in this parking lot. he was arrested but she posted his bond and a week later he was back here where he opened fire inside that third floor apartment behind us, now a domestic violence survivor is speaking out trying to help others. family members say there was a long history of domestic violence between tarekka jones and her ex-boyfriend, kevin reynolds. the two had a child together and according to court documents in february when reynolds dropped off their daughter at the cheverly station apartments, he threw jones to the ground, dragged her around the parking lot, and later returned with a gun. he was charged with assault and arrested at the beginning of march. the prince george's county state's attorney angela alsobrooks says jones didn't press charges and asked a judge for bond. >> she wanted his nd so she could ma

we're continuing to follow that breaking news this morning. >> meagan fitzgerald is outside the belgium embassy in northwest d.c. what more can you tell us sf. >> reporter: obviously this is still coming in. it is breaking news at this point. we're working all sources to try to get more information. but very concerning. as you mentioned, we know two explosions at the brussels airport. we know there are several casualties and injuries and we know there was an explosion at at least one metro station. we've been following tweets on twitter where eu officials are telling folks to stay indoors. this is all unfolding if you recall just a couple of days ago on friday when salah abdeslam was arrested. he was one of the last connected to that paris attack back in november. now, again, we don't know who did these attacks at the airport and at the metro station. it's just certainly worth mentioning that this comes at a time heightened security in that country right now. so again, still working right now to figure out exactly who is responsible for these attacks. but we do understand that there are

in meagan fitzgerald is at the scene. what is going on over there? >> reporter: well, this is still a very active investigation. but what we know at this point is that this all started at around midnight, it was about 11:55, police kcame to this are because they were trying to serve a warrant. as police were arriving, two vehicles were driving towards them, one struck a police cruiser and police ended up finding two people who were inside suffering there gfrom gu wounds. this is video as it was all unfo unfolding. you can see the area was taped off with crime scene police and police on scene. after the vehicle was struck and they found those two suspects or the individuals, rather, we don't want to call them suspects because it's still unclear, but we know they were taken to the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body and lower body. now, while all this was unfolding, detectives say that they called in their major crimes unit, they were on scene here investigat sort of a standoff situation, as well, but they were eventually able to t

news4's meagan fitzgerald talking to residents rattled by this crime. meagan?reporter: and, jim, we talked to a lot of those folks who say they have lived in this community for 30 years or more, and they've never experienced a murder around here, but that certainly changed today. we watched as investigators just scoured this entire area here looking for evidence. in fact, from our vantage point here, we can see the back deck which investigators say belonged to 83-year-old johan de leede. mason neck is a quiet community right along but just after 1:00 on friday morning, things quickly changed. john heard gunshots. >> about four, five shots in a volley, and then there was a little pause and two or three more shortly after that. >> reporter: fairfax county police rushed to the 6000 block of river road after 83-year-old johan de leede's wife called 911 saying her husband had been shot. when police arrived they found de leede in the back of his home with multiple gunshot wounds. >> there's pellets all over the inside of the house. >> reporter: investigators spent ho

meagan fitzgerald with the latest on this. >> reporter: yeah, a lot of information still trying to beorted out by police. but we know that fairfax county police arrived here to the 7500 block of trailly wood court to serve a warrant to someone in a home just behind will us here. when they arrived, as they were driving here, two vehicles were approaching them. now, we quawant to show you vid from early this morning. you can see a hectic scene out here, a lot of police activity. crime scene tape was placed up here because police did find two people that were shot inside a vehicle that collided with one of their cruisers. those two individuals were taken to the hospital. we're told they're being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. now, investigators tell us that they have not been able to locate the individual they are trying to serve the warrant to in the first place. but what is unclear at this hour is if the person they were trying to serve that warpt in the vehicles. we will have the latest information as soon as we know it. back to you. >>> students at george may so that on se

this latest incident happened yesterday afternoon just past four mile run drive where news4's meagan fitzgerald joins us live as police look for that suspect. meagan? >> reporter: and, jim, this all happened at this intersection just behind us here. police say it was the suspect that cut off the victim and then got mad when the guy honked at him. then the next thing you know this, guy had a shattered window. we had an opportunity to speak with that victim with the help of a translator. the commute usually looks like this at around 2:00. so jose didn't anticipate having any issues when trying to get home from work. that was until he says a driver cut in front of him as he was approaching four mile run drive. >> translator: all he did was horng his horn. he said they almost lit me. >> reporter: that's when he said the driver and the passenger got out of the vehicle and started walking towards him. >> translator: they got out of the car and got bats out of the trunk and they started hitting his car. he said they did go for him once. >> reporter: jose showed us the scratches on his arm, the dents t

laborer that the mother picked up outside a 7-eleven in gaithersburg, and that's where we find meagan fitzgerald this evening with this story. meagan? >> reporter: yeah, wendy. the single mother of two says she came to this parking lot because she was looking for inexpensive labor, but instead she says she got one of the worst lessons of her life. tisha said she needed help moving heavy furniture. >> well, i had a large bedroom set that i needed moved and i didn't want to spend a minimum of three hours for labor. >> reporter: so last wednesday she decided to come here to the 7-eleven parking lot along north frederick avenue to pick up two day workers to help her out. one of them was 44-year-old jose compos gonzalez. ajay says she was working in her room while gonzalez was just feet away. >> my daughter was upstairs in her room, and the day laborer was undoing the armoire. >> reporter: that's when court documents say gonzalez inappropriately touched the 6-year-old girl before leaving the house. shortly after, ajay says her daughter told her what happened. >> i was happened in my home. >> reporter

meagan fitzgerald reports on kevin reynolds and his violent past. >> reporter: according to court documentshere was a long history of domestic violence. the court documents detail the latest case happening in february. it says that reynolds physically abused jones in this court documents say on february 10th, reynolds dropped off their daughter at the cheverly station apartments. when jones approached the car, police say reynolds threw her to the ground and started dragging her around the vehicle. investigators say reynolds left and returned with a gun, but jones was able to escape and call 911. reynolds was arrested in march, but prince george's county state's attorney angela alsobrook says it was tariqua who paid his bond so he could be released. one week later he was back at the apartment where he shot and killed jones and her stepsister. coming up at 5:00, the state's attorney explains why reynolds was given bond despite his lengthy criminal history and why this entire case is now under review. >>> that cheverly case is one of several recent cases illustrating the growing problem of dom

meagan fitzgerald is live in germantown. >> reporter: good morning. the call came in at around 1:00 this morning we're told 120 firefighters responded to this town home just behind us here. when they did, it was engulfed in flames. of course about five hours later, we're still talking about a very active scene. you can see that the structure is still smoldering. 20 people displaced. of course the folks who lived in this town home and either side, there is significant damage so those folks had to leave, as well. very scary moments here especially when part of the structure started to collapse. front wall caved in first. eight firefighters were injured when it happened. want to bring in the montgomery county fire chief. th morning. can you talk about how the firefighters are doing and how this all happened? >> the eight firefighters were transferred to local hospitals. five of the eight have already been released and have come back to the scene and being interviewed by the investigators. the three others are being observed and waiting test results. clea

but as our meagan fitzgerald reports now, police have a new stool to help track down those thieves. >> reporter: many neighbors say thieves have been taking packages from their front porch for the last several months, and they believe the problem is getting worse. a lot of folks say they like living in bloomingdale. >> it's a lovely neighborhood. >> reporter: but there is a >> we've had packages taken from our stoop. >> a company showed it was delivered. of course, no package for me so the assumption is that it was stolen. >> reporter: and metropolitan police officers say in many cases that assumption is right. in fact, one neighbor who lives near second and s says he had five packages stolen since december. so he set up a camera. and sure enough, a suspect is seen walking onto his porch and stealing his merchandise. police say they're seeing these types of crimes in other areas of the city. that's why detectives say it's important for neighbors to file a police report regardless of what's stolen. officers will open an investigation and canvass the neighborhood, but mpd says some case
