there it is, mecklenburg county. now, this is new, since i clicked it on the last time, we got more than a quarter of the election-day vote in in mecklenburg county. a third of the distribute's population here. mccready overperformed in the early vote. the question is can he keep that up in the same-day vote? given what's happening in union county, he has to. in the same-day vote many 2018, mccready lost by .3 of a point. i think he needs to win it tonight. right now with a quarter of the vote, a little bit more than a quarter of the same-day vote counted in mecklenburg, he's still at 60%. he was at 60% when they went to count it. what's the number basically to look at here? as this vote comes in, as this 28 gets bigger, how far does that 60% tick down? he got 54% here on election day 2018. if he is above 54% when we count all the vote here, that might be enough to wipe out the gains that bishop is getting out of union county. if he's not, bishop might get this thing. >> okay. what i am hearing from you if i can synt

this is mecklenburg county. hillary clinton carried mecklenburg county in 2016. but donald trump carried this part. i want to go back in time. look, president trump, then candidate trump carried this part of the district, the part of mecklenburg district that is in north carolina 9. not by a lot, but the president carried it. what are we seeing tonight so far, dan mccready, the democrat, winning it a lot at the moment. only 4% in mecklenburg county. as we go lew the other counties, so far it looks like this number when it goes up, can mccready hold the lead, anything like that in the biggest part of the district? that is the defining question of the moment as we move through the rest of the race. union county is the second largest county. we're up to 67%. whoa, dan bishop doing what he needs to do, he is winning a republican county by 20 points. that's not bad, but margins matter in politics. can't compare a presidential race and a house race, but you can say president trump won this county by 30 points. republicans need these more rural counties. this is a test.

we're still waiting on mecklenburg.slight lead for dan mccready. if this one tapes blue, it's a good sign for the democrat. then here, fayetteville, cumberland county and the fayetteville suburbs, only 55% in. so in the two areas with suburbs, fayetteville in the east, the charlotte area in the western part of this district, still a lot of votes out. you've got less than half the vote here in mecklenburg county and about the same percentage, 45% still to be counted out here in fayetteville. so you map it out right now, we're at 81. the republican has a lead. 2,600 votes, 2558. that's hard to overcome late in a congressional special election. hard to overcome but not impossible. if mccready can hold on to his margin here and here, it is doable. we're going to be counting for a while. >> we're going to hear different stories told off the same result tomorrow morning. thank you for taking us through it. all right. almost over but not quite enough. >>> all right. tomorrow, most of us should take time to remember the fallen

we're now up to 90% in mecklenburg. so mccready continues to lead. the question is as more and more comes in, don, can it come in? he has to outperform this. he's been winning 56% of the vote in the county now. he has to do better than that because when you pull it out, he has to overcome that. math's notimpossible. i would argue it's starting to get improbable. dan bishop is in the lead. in the next hour we should be able to finish this up. if he holds on, people will say, president trump winning it at the last minute. republicans will say, we won. they will be right. they will have held this seat they've had since 1963. if you're the democrats, you're going to think, we came really close. that means we're strong in the suburbs heading into 2020, but you still will have lost a race in which you were very close. again, we'll count the final 5% probably within this hour and know the winner. >> listen, a win is a win if they do win. it's got to be, to them, they've got to wonder what the heck is going on. as you said, republicans are in trouble in the

about a third of this district is in mecklenburg county.that we talk about it that portion of the district by three points in 2016. mccready tonight wins it by 13 points. so that's the kind of swing we've been seeing in metro areas, suburban areas across the country in the trump era. away from the republicans toward the democrats. if you had said at the start of the night that's where mccready was going to end up in mecklenburg county, you might have thought mccready was going to win the election outright. why didn't he? why did bishop survive? it's the other major story line in american politics we saw here, and that is the rural vote. the eastern part of this district when you get away from charlotte, you get away from the suburbs, these are more blue collar, rural, exurban areas, and that is where the election day vote. it was the election day folk who's went out and came through big for bishop. did it have something to do with the rally trump held on election eve? that's certainly possible. it was a big rural turnout, republican turnout

number one, move to mecklenburg county. about a third of the vote.e margin. if that margin for dan mccready, it will probably hold up. he is probably on his way the a victory. we'll see. we're early in the night. close rate uniting now. union county, county number two in terms of population in this district, the republican is winning by nowhere near the margin president trump carried this county when he won it by 12 points in 2016. move on to the other end of the district. here's where your population is, county number three, the democrat ahead by a pretty good margin. just a little context here. president trump won this in the presidential race. it was close in robeson county, but dan mccready at the moment putting up a healthy lead. watch this as more of the vote comes in. last but not least, the fourth largest county. includes the fayetteville suburb, the charlottesville suburbs. if they stays blue, the democrats will be in good tonight. but we've got some counting to do. >> and let's go to chris cuomo. >> we'll be following the election. it is ou

if you look to the mecklenburg district, in 2016 -- these are what i would call the whole food suburbs of charlotte, pretty upscale, he won that portion of the district by four points in 2016. dan mccready, the democrat last fall, won those same suburbs by nine points and won them yesterday by 12.5 points even though dan bishop, the republican, represents that area in the state senate. clearly trump's own popularity was driving the democratic performance there. and it were replicated statewide, he would be on track to lose. >> you know, in 2008 there was a lot of -- 2018 there was a lot of thought that that voter, dave, might be a trump-for-president voter, but they wanted a check on trump. why do i find it harder to believe that that voter that voted mccready last night in those suburbs is suddenly 14 months later going to split their ticket? >> well, it's a great question. and look, the fact of the matter is democrats need to get out of their own way in order to let trump self-destruct. the question is will they in nominating a candidate for president. it's unlikely that they're goin

first in mecklenburg county, charlotte is not in the district.uburbs and exurbs are. you see this blue. that's for dan mccready. 60%, 39%. that is a healthy lead. i want to tell you why that's so important. the suburbs have been moving away from the republican party during the trump years. this is now tonight -- let's go back to the presidential race. president trump, it was close, but president trump carried this part of mecklenburg county, the part of the county that is in the ninth district. president trump held on three years ago. as of tonight as we watch the votes, dan mccready winning there by a pretty healthy margin at the moment. move over here. union county, the second biggest county in this district. dan bishop's winning in a district the republican needs to carry. that's good news for him. that's about 16 points. it's good news for him but go back to the presidential race. that's 30 points. president trump won the second largest county in this district big-time. dan bishop fighting for it tonight. another warning sign for republicans

it's because more vote came in in mecklenburg.is the largest component of the county in the district, about a third of the population in this district. this is the charlotte suburbs. see mccready leading it 59%-40%. what he needs -- he got 54% here total in the 2018 election. what he needs here is all election day vote that's going to come in, it tends historically to favor the republicans but some of the earl early precincts have been encouraging for mccready. he needs to overperform in the election day vote in this giant suburban part of the county to and bishop. bishop is going to get more out of the union. looks like more from the rural areas. the question is all of those suburbs in mecklenburg county, what do they need for mccready? he's going to need a giant number there. this one has been a barn burner. >> in terms of when the vote is likely to come in, do we know anything about historical trends, are they a fast counting district, any of this that's likely to come in before the rest of this? >> generally, the question is,

looks like he improved in mecklenburg.t of the night that mccready would get about 56% of the vote out of mecklenburg, you would have thought he might be on his way to victory. and that speaks to the part, this is college educated suburbanites, higher income. this is a place that donald trump won this part of the district by three points in 2016. mccready tonight by about 13 points. that's a big shift away from trump in the suburban part of this district. big shift toward the democrats. and again, it looked for a while like that might be enough to give mccready the victory. why didn't mccready win tonight? it has to do with what happened in the rural part of the district, the eastern part of the district. much smaller counties out here. i'll give you one. robison county. this is a rural county. dan mccready did win this county, you see basically by a point. dan mccready last year won this county by 15 points. so this is a major gain for bishop, a major gain for the republicans. this was a trump county. it went obama 2012.

you come over here to mecklenburg where charlotte is, you come down to the southeastern suburbs, dan mccready not only winning but winning big. first trump in 2016. then the big republican route that made nancy pelosi speaker in 2018. in 2019, more. why do i say that? you see dan mccready. you go to the presidential race, president trump won. that will be seen by democrats as a bit of a moral victory here. in the end, though, a win is a win, right? this district in republican hands since 1963 will stay there for the time being. democrats will probably field t the win next time. others who may be thinking about running for re-election next year will will look at this one-time strong ruby red district. now a two-point race. the bottom line, the president's happy. others are looking at this in other parts of the country in districts that are less than republican might think about retiring. dave and christine? >> john at the magic wall. thank you. >>> president trump is searching for his fourth national security adviser in three years. john bolton is out. how did that happen? it depends

you have a piece of it that's in mecklenburg county where the democrats made big gains from 2016 to 2018. then the next county out is a kind of classic county called union county where democrats made more modest gains. if you see those reversed in this result, i think it would be a sign that particularly in these kind of outer reach districts for democrats, that message of pinning the party as radical are able to hold some of those traditionally republican white collar suburbanites. mccready is trying to run the 2018 play book, put his head down, avoid these big fights and focus as much as possible on bread and butter issues, particularly health care. >> we did hear the president talk about religion suggesting the democrats weren't so much about religion. there were people saying this rings the irony bell coming from the thrice married president of the united states. >> evangelical white christians have become the absolute bedrock of the president's support. i mean, he's still looking at a 3/4 approval rating. many of those voters essentially view themselves in a struggle over the countr

it's not all of mecklenburg.ken place, and this is a traditionally republican district. very clean in reporting their election results. as i said i'm kind of looking at this very few seconds expecting it see some numbers pop up. by this point in 2018 we had a pretty clear idea of what was going on, so there's one glitch at that polling station. but that is going to be crucial the minute we get a result there. and why because that portion of the district it's a microcosm of the story we're telling nationally. this is suburban swath that donald trump won by three points in 2016. he got elected by winning this portion of the district by three points, 2018 in the mid-term. the democrat mccredy carried by 10. >> how big an indicator will this give us, if this district were voting in 2020, the ninth congressional and it were going the way it's going to go tonight how much would it lead the state next year? >> keep in mind trump won the district like we say by 12 points in 2016. so use that as a baseline in where's the
