anyway, i got carl and pretty soon we had medevac's coming and going. we had other casualties, don peterson, david -- the squad leader, we got him out of there. he had been within a few feet of don. they went flat on the ground unwounded, when the shooting started, and when they were laying there, he got a machine gun bullet that went into the top of his shoulder and came out his lower back and of course messed up everything, from his chest cavity all the way down. i do not remember who brought him back, but david was a good friend of mine, and when they brought him back he was barely breathing. his eyes were closed and he had mud all over his face and blood all over his shirt, and i thought i was seeing him at the last time, because he looked like he was going to die. and they got him on a medevac, and it was about two months, he came back to us. i was very surprised. i was sure i was looking at him on the way to the morgue. we got all of our casualties back. don peterson's body we did not recover. just not your teeth -- gnash your teeth at the thought

if you live on the planes like i do, oklahoma's part of that, as medevac the first battle of custer's in oklahoma. in western oklahoma. i worked with frank lucas years ago when he was in congress and i was secretary of state, it was in private hands to get it into the national park system which it is now, thank goodness. but he described perfectly everything from weather to how this a vast battlefield shaved regionally and it shaped the sioux and the other great plains tribes that were involved. but the nature of warfare the nature of whether and how they interacted. but it's a great book. you know when you're in it that here's a guy guy that has been pulled into the character of custer and pulled into the character of crazy horse and just understands, he was just so good. and i could pick out a bunch of other books and tell you, but i would pick this one to and it would not even be a history book, but again is a wonderful first man of rome series, that book on politics and intrigue in the roman world. is probably better than any history written at the time. it was some wonderful hist

they could not figure out who was shooting at us, we could not at the medevac helicopter to pick him up. so he had a liaison patrol and walked to a safe distance of the helicopter could pick him up after being shot in the leg. i said i hope you meet cheerleaders and have ice cream and take tons of showers. don't worry about us, we will be fine and he left. two days later after he left the valley, this black hawk helicopter comes in and we are excited. whatever that helicopter had, we didn't have and it would be better than what we did have so it would be awesome. the helicopter landed in only one thing came off, the dude with a big pack and he walked with a limp. i knew was brennan. i was so disappointed. i said what's the deal? all he said to me was the showers were making them lazy and the ice cream was making them fat. that made me feel pretty darn small hanging out for 10 days with a ricochet in my legs. i can't take that back so i have to be within the rest of the time. our standard operating procedure book in a near ambush situation, you charge you shoot them and they shoot you
