i interviewed her earlier this month at the national conference for media reform and asked her to describeat historic day december 25, 1957, when the little rock nine finally integrated little rock central high school. >> that was a wonderful day because we had a jeep in front and a jeep and back and we were in station wagons with bayonets and guns and the whole 9 yards. there were there to protect this and see to it that we got in the school. once we got into the school, we all had an individual bodyguard. the troopers were all up and down the hallways. they did not come into the classrooms, but they were up and down the hallways. that is how i went to school. 1958.was for 1957- a helicopter was buzzing over the schools and 1200 troopers were on the football field and the grounds and so forth for the first two or three weeks. i don't wish that on any young person, but that is what was necessary for us to get our education. and i'm happy that it took place. >> so they kept out the angry mob of 1000 outside the school, but what about inside? hundreds and hundreds of white students, a sea of

i have just glen in from denver, where i was at the national conference on media reform, and when we flew into the airport, at denver airport, people hold up signs when you come out to pick you up, and as we were walking, there were some soldiers there. they were going to be picking up a general, and as we walked by, they were waving, and i thought maybe the general is behind me because they have a sign for the general, and didn't look that way. i said, want to go talk to them. so i went back, and i said do you watch democracy now? and they said, every day. and so i said, really. why do you watch? the said, it's objective and you cover war. it's not about whether you're for or against war. it's about covering the most serious decision a country can make. i see the media as a huge kitchen table that stretches across the globe, that we all sit around and debate and discuss the most important issue office the day. war and peace, life and death, and anything less than that is a disservice to the servicemen and women of this country. they account have these debates on military bases. they

and i just came from the national conference on media reform where it was pointed out that one of the magazines that most affected dr. king in seeing what was happening on the ground in vietnam was the independent publication ramparts. so dr. king gave that address. dr. king, who is hailed today all over the country, all over the world, "time" magazine called his speech, um, talked about it as demagogic saying it sounded like the script from radio hanoi. "the washington post" right here in washington said with that speech he did a disservice to his cause, his country, his people. yet dr. king wouldn't stop. he continued to speak out against war. and i think that is very relevant today in and why we did that column on what dr. king would be saying today. um, would he be invited to his own, the celebrations of his life today? and as president obama presided over the honoring of dr. king with the memorial, what would dr. king have to say about president obama's policies around war? what's happening, for example, now in afghanistan and the expanded covert wars in the form of drone attacks

[laughter] this is a great opportunity. the older you get the more new experiences you have. i always was told, the first day i was sworn in as secretary of the navy, never go to a ribbon cutting unless you are cutting the ribbon. today i broke that rule. i was never the less -- it was nevertheless a pleasure, a special pleasure because the navy league has its, as teddy roosevelt called, never been more important to the country and to world security and it yesterday. as they great dr. johnson said, nothing concentrates the mind like that prospect of hanging. and today the senior
