josh lederman is outside walter reed medical center where the general was treated and msnbc medical contributor both. josh, what do we know about the treatment the general underwent there at walter reed? >> the family of colin powell, yasmin, is praising the caring treatment that he got here at walter reed national military medical center. but we don't really know a whole lot about how the last few days of his life unfolded as he was battling covid. we don't know for example which side effects or complications from covid-19 he had or even when he tested positive for the virus, although we do know that he had been fully vaccinated, meaning this was a breakthrough case. we also know that colin powell, as you mentioned, was someone who had suffered actually multiple bouts with cancer including a 2003 bout with prostate cancer in which he had surgery while he was the sitting secretary of state. we also know the multiple myeloma, cancer in the bone marrow, not only made him more vulnerable to severe covid-19 infection, but a study published in july in the journal "nature" found people with multiple

doctors at uc irvine medical center say the former president is now in good spirits. we're going to be there live in a moment with an update. but also this breaking overnight. texas' new abortion law survives yet one more day. a federal appeals court upheld the legislation that essentially bans all abortions in that state, the second most populous in the country. they say the law can be enforced while they consider an appeal of a lower court judge's order blocking it. plus, could former president donald trump be subpoenaed by january 6th investigators? the select committee in the house says they have not ruled that out. this as his former associate steve bannon faces criminal contempt charges now for defying his own subpoena. we'll have much more on all of that in just a moment. let's begin, though, with cnn senior national correspondent sara sidner, in irvine, california, following all the news of former president bill clinton. what do we know about clinton's condition this morning? >> reporter: good morning, jim. we know that he is on the mend, according to his aide

he was admitted to uc irvine medical center last night. his doctors say after 2 days of treatment, he's responding to antibiotics well. this from his spokesman just a few minutes ago, quote, he is on the mend, in good spirits, it is incredibly thankful to the doctors, nurses, and staff providing him with excellent care. >>> now to our other breaking story near sacramento. at least four people seriously hurt when a small plane slammed into the front yard in the rural community in wilton. the initial impact sent up a plume of smoke that could be seen from sacramento, about 20 miles away. reporter steve large is at the scene. 4 it's not often you can get this close to a plane crash, and show the wreckage in the immediate aftermath. we are in sacramento county in a front yard, and what you are looking at right now is the wreckage of this plane. you can see it burst into flames and started a fire. there were four people on this plane and all, a man, a woman, and two teenagers. it sounds like a family. they were all able to get out of the plane.
