let's bring in cnn's meg. cnn's meg tirrell for much more on this and this mutation in the virus. what exactly does it mean? meg, what are you learning? >> yeah. kate. so first, the good news. >> this is a mutation that they've observed or a set of mutations they've observed in this hospitalized patient in louisiana that seems confined to this patient in louisiana. they did not find these this set of mutations in the birds from which they think that this virus was this patient was infected. and there is no evidence that this has been passed on. so that is the good news. the more concerning news. and that's using sort of cdc term, they say this is concerning. this shows that the virus has potentially mutated in this patient. to give it a better way to potentially infect the upper respiratory cells in humans. we haven't seen human to human transmission of this bird flu virus. and a big reason for that is it's not very good at infecting the cells in our upper airway, our nose and our throat, for example. and so what they're seeing is that in this patient who's been hospitalized, the

cnn's meg tirrell is here to discuss. so meg why is it that kids are especially vulnerable right now to pneumonia and other viruses well boris, i mean, kids are always at a bit of an increased risk. >> i mean, they've got smaller airways so if those are getting inflamed, it makes it harder for them to breathe. and in particular, they have been harder hit than usual by a kind of walking pneumonia caused by a bacterial infection. the bacteria is called mycoplasma pneumoniae. and this has really been an elevated level since august especially among kids ages 2 to 4. and that is putting some strain on children's hospitals. and of course, you never want children's hospitals to be at high capacity and particularly not as we are heading into the real respiratory illness season right now. nationally levels of covid are low and stable. we haven't seen them increase as we usually do into the winter season, and we could still see that coming levels of flu and rsv are starting to rise, and experts tell us they expect you know, about a

cbs's meg oliver looks at the concern and benefits of fluoridation. >> reporter: zoe smith was just fourrs old when she had surgery to extract her four front teeth. her mom said smith had a healthy diet but didn't use toothpaste with fluoride when brushing. >> they just started to decay about a year and a half, two years in. and there was nothing it seemed that we could do. >> reporter: children with develop mental disabilities like smith are more susceptible to dental problems for a variety of reasons. she also lives in a town without fluoride in the water. >> we see incredibly high rates of tooth decay. >> reporter: dr. mary beth giacona is a pediatric dentist in newark. she says having fluoride in water is one of the tools that can help prevent cavities. >> our patients are not getting any fluoridated water. fluoridating water can prevent up to 40% of tooth decay. >> reporter: as of 2022 roughly three quarters of americans on public water systems drink fluoridated water. new jersey ranks second to last on that list. tim eustis is the executive director of the north jersey water supply

so first of all, meg, i mean, where are we at with bird flu? and you know, what is being done to sort of keep the virus away from humans at this point? >> yeah. so right now this is concerning. so this patient in louisiana, they are the first patient to have a severe case in the united states of bird flu. and they're also the first patient to catch bird flu from a backyard flock. and what's concerning about the news that we heard from cdc is that while this patient was hospitalized, the virus appears to have mutated and acquired mutations that could make it better at infecting our nose and throats. so the bird flu isn't very good at infecting us, which is why we haven't seen person to person spread so far. the good news about this information, though, is that this patient has not spread this to anybody else, and it doesn't appear they caught the virus in this form from the birds. so it's really just in this patient. so we don't have person to person spread of bird flu that we know of right now in the u.s., but we are starting to see the federal

cbs's meg oliver has more from manhattan. >> reporter: nypd released two new photos of the man wantedning in connection with the murder of united health care ceo brian thompson. one of the photos shows him smiling. meanwhile, authorities searched this hostel three miles away from the scene where police believe the suspect stayed before the murder. >> the police was like right there and the fellow told me that his friend was in the same room as the guy. no, i'm sure that's him. >> reporter: the time line of the shocking climb played out like this. at 6:15 a.m. the shooter exited a subway station north of the hilton hotel. two minutes later cameras inside a nearby starbucks captured his partially covered face. around 6:30 a.m. surveillance video obtaind by "the new york times" shows the gunman talking on his cell phone while walking towards the scene. minutes later he shot and killed thompson outside the hotel. before escaping through an alli way then riding a bike to central park where police say he was spotted on surveillance cameras. less than 15 minutes after the shooting he left th

cnn medical correspondent meg tirrell joins us now with more. so, meg, this is quite disturbing. obviously, leaded gasoline very common for for for decades. what more are you learning yeah. >> so this was a study that looked at the potential impacts jordan neely essentially modeling of what's known about blood lead levels of people throughout the last 75 years and what's known about the connections between those lead levels and mental health disorders. >> we know that there's connections between lead and lower iq and things like that. so lead was added to gasoline in the united states between 1923 and 1996, when it was banned and it began being phased out even before that, as we realized some of the health issues around this. and so this study looked at those levels of lead in people's blood over the years and what they find by this modeling is that there are an estimated 151 million additional mental health disorders that were because of childhood exposure to lead in gasoline exhaust and this, as you noted, is things like anxiety and depression, adhd, but also milder things that

let's bring in meg tirrell because meg, i know that you have some new reporting on enhanced security measures. put in place for unitedhealthcare employees. tell us more about that yeah brianna, there is an email sent out to unitedhealth group employees from the ceo. that's the parent company of unitedhealthcare. the insurance unit of this major company that brian thompson was the ceo of. we've obtained that email and the ceo andrew witty, telling employees, quote, our immediate priorities are very clear. they say we're lending all the support possible to brian's family as they deal with the tragedy of losing someone they love so dearly and they say we're ensuring the safety security and well-being of our employees. they say that they've increased security at their campuses in minnesota, as well as sites in washington d.c. and new york city and surrounding areas. they say they're assessing other sites as well. and in the coming days, folks may see increased security protocols at many locations. they're also not allowing external visitors to their campuses through the end of the week.

so, meg, what does happen at this point? >> well hopefully nothing. you know what we've heard from the cdc about this? is that the good news is it appears the virus mutated in the patient while they were in the hospital past the time they were potentially infectious to other people. they haven't been shown to have spread the virus to any other people. and it also doesn't appear that they picked it up from the flock of birds where they're suspected to have caught the virus. and so it's not thought that this version of the virus that essentially has mutations that make it better able, potentially to infect our nose and throats, the upper respiratory tract of humans. they don't think that this is really floating around in the environment. so that's why i say hopefully nothing happens next. and we don't start to see this spread between people. so far, as you noted, the cdc says we haven't seen person to person spread. we have seen 65 confirmed cases of bird flu among humans in the u.s. and this outbreak. and all of these have come from animals, most of th

. >> and cnn medical correspondent meg tirrell.resting marion, you wanted to kick it off with you. you know bernie sanders pointed to the fact that 1 in 5 kids in the us are obese, according to the cdc. what do you make of his exchange with the fda commissioner that we just played? >> well, i just think it's incredible that at last we're pushing the fda to take on chronic disease as one of the issues that it deals with the 75% of american adults are overweight or obese. and at risk for chronic disease. it's the leading cause of death. and disability among americans and the government hasn't been doing anything about it. there's no national program to try to prevent chronic disease because if you did have a national program, you would have to take on the food industry and nobody wants to do that. >> and to be clear, for our viewers yeah and you've been fighting the food industry. you've been fighting the food industry. you've been trying to raise the alarm on this for decades. but it's not just democrats we should point out who are

cnn medical correspondent meg tirrell is joining us now., meg, i think everyone would like to know, just like, how worried should we be about this? >> yeah, jessica, i mean, when you hear about a cat dying after eating infected pet food, i mean, that makes you think, how widespread could this potentially be? it's really important to give the details about this pet food. it was raw, frozen turkey pet food sold by a company called northwest naturals that this cat consumed and was infected by h5n1. they found that the virus had contaminated the pet food and that cat died. we also have heard about house cats who have died after drinking raw milk. they died from h5n1, and so we know that cats are very susceptible to this virus and that raw milk and raw food are concerning because the virus can be found in really high levels in those items. >> and so it's not recommended that cats or humans consume those things. >> we do know that pasteurizationou inactivates the virus. so regular milk is all right. but if we look at the source of exposure for th

cnn's meg tirrell tracking this one for us. she's back with us now. what are you hearing about this. and seeing well, first the good news. >> if you look at the overall respiratory illness activity level in the united states right now, it is still low. although the latest data we have from the cdc, we expect they will be updated today are from about two weeks ago mid-november. but as of that point, you can see across the country really low levels, a little bit elevated in certain states. but still not at the really high levels we expect to potentially get into later this fall and into the winter. also, though, we all just got together for thanksgiving with family and friends and so what doctors are telling us is that about a week after thanksgiving, often you can start to see an increase in levels of these respiratory viruses so covid right now is actually at pretty low levels and declining after a bump we saw in the summer. that's a pattern we often see and then we have seen every year since covid joined us that we get a bigger bump during the winter
