meg whitman is in and leo apotheker is out. whitman ran ebay for years before campaigning to be governor of california. apotheker was fired by the tech company's board. he ran h.p. for less than a year. during that time, h.p. shares lost more than 40% of their value, and today was no exception. the stock lost almost 5%. joining us now to talk more about this big corporate shakeup at h.p., jeffrey sonnenfeld, professor of management at yale university. hi, jeff, hi, susie, how are you? >> susie: good, thank you. the big question everybody upons answered is whitman the right person for the job? >> she is the right person for the job, and for several reasons. first, she-- she wouldn't be the first choice for a lo of us hoping an insider really grounded in this business would get it, here she is on board for a little period of time. she has a good consumer marketing background. she's a great communicator. and she's gotten better after being bruised a bit in her campaign. she understands how to integrate businesses and she's tested,

and today the program got a big boost. >> reporter: meg whitman toured two schools today. the students come primarily from an area that historically has a high drop out rate. >> graduating from high school does not equal being ready for college. those are two very different things. >> meg whitman. >> reporter: today whitman made a contribution to help schools over the next 10 years. >> charter schools are showing they can change the trajectory. they can make a difference in the school's scores, in the college readiness. >> reporter: the academic support is huge. >> kids aren't left alone. high school is pretty challenging. >> reporter: summit has been some what reluctantly accepted by the east high union high school district. >> we lose resources to the charter schools that we authorize in our district but at the same time, what we're creating is a competition and inspiration. >> reporter: whitman told me it doesn't necessarily mean a return to policy. >> here's the good news, i'm not seeking office. i'm not running for anything. so i get to do -- i will never say never bu

meg whitman is she a good match? >> the decision is perhaps that she is not a good match. she has a spot for background, they are starting to diversify into hardware. she has a software background. in addition to the bay. >>pam: you were not encouraged with her assignment as ceo? >> no way, shape or form. she left the bay in worse shape. >> these stock market numbers. we know about the instability of priest crease. >> i think today, the country of grease--with it is very difficult the country of greece, ogreece is going to fail it is going to be a lot like 200 to argentina china is starting to slow its manufacturing. 20 02, argentina could compare to the recent greece downfall. this could be the summer of discontent we are bouncing off of new lows. >>pam: we are already low we are rooting for things to turn around! particularly for the small investor is it frustrating? wharany advice? >> it is about diversifying and not quite changing. and i am so glad that i got rid of freddie mac, and fannie mae. right now, i loved

meg whitman will work on $1 a year. semiconductor maker micron didn't help things in technology, reporting a loss in its fiscal fourth quarter. analyst had been expecting a penny per share profit. micron has been hurt by falling prices for memory chips used in personal computer. micron was the biggest loser among s&p 500 stocks, falling more than 14%. volume was heavy today as well. the stock fell to a new 52 week low, just above $5 per share. it has been a tough week for chip stocks. today, n-vidia fell 4%. advanced micro devices sparked some of the sector selling earlier in the week when it had a disappointing outlook. a.m.d. fell another 4% today. and intel dropped almost 4%. we mentioned earlier how the materials sector was the worst stock sector this quarter. it was also the worst today. heavy equipment maker ingersoll rand fell more than 12%. volume quadrupled with the stock falling to a new 52 week low. the stock is down 40% from its july prices and down more than 45% from its high in may, its third quarter outlo
