jamie and megan, back to you. >>> let's get you updated on the breaking news. investigators confirm that four people were killed after their helicoltonner crashed late last night. sherrie? >> reporter: investigators with the national transportation safety board and the faa will be back at the scene today after a helicopter crashed and killed four people in central maryland. the crash happened last night about 10:30 near smithsburg about ten miles east of hagerstown. the helicopter burst into flames when it crashed into a highway. authorities say it was a robinson r helicopter. the owner is morrison aviation out of wilmington, delaware. the helicopter did not hit any cars when it crashed into the eastbound lane of i-70. it's not sure whether weather played a role but visibility was not good at the time. a bright light of electricity crashed in the air when the aircraft apparently hit a power line. >> there were power lines that were down near the scene that we're seeing obviously right off. so there was concern about traffic eastbound and westbound. east and wes

megan mcgrath is standing by live on capitol hill. megan, hearings continue today?reporter: that's right. hearings are going to get under way at 2:00 this afternoon, and metro's general manager is among the people who are expected to testify later on today. he's going to be answering questions about procedures that have been put in place following st month's deadly crash. we're also expecting to hear from a member of the national transportation safety board during this hearing. now trains are still running in manual mode with restrictions still in place through the crash zone itself. the cause of the crash has not been determined but the ntsb is focusing on track circuits and the system that monitors the presence of trains on the tracks, sending instructions to trains to either slow down or stop when there's another train in the area. that system failed on the day that this collision occurred. now, yesterday the ntsb issued urgent recommendations. thar ee asking metro to upgrade the backup system to the automated system. they want greater redundancy there so this so

i'm megan gilliland. fox 45 morning news. >>> two people it happened after 7:00 last night in an apartment complex across nasa. the shooting stemmed from an argument between two students. the millitary officers' roommate grabbed the officer's weapon and began firing in the parking lot. a capital police officer pulled into the parking lot, saw the shooting and shot at the gunman. the officer and the suspect were shot. a 12-year-old girl inside of the apartment building was grazed by a stray bullet. the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. >>> investigators have identified the man fatally shot by capital police after he failed to obey commands to tropp his weapon. kelly white of brandy whine, opened fire on several police officers after he sped away from a traffic stop on sunday afternoon. after driving down the wrong way on a street, the man crashed into a police cruise ershitting two officers along the way. the officers suffered minor injuries. >>> a 5-year-old girl is shot in the head and th

megan gilliland joins us with the latest. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, patrice. investigators say smith swerved off the road hitting a killing 15-year-old kaitlyn bossler. we spoke with kaitlyn's family and you can imagine, they're devastated. they're in mourning but also very angry upset that a drunk driver took kaitlyn's drive. investigators say kit lin was standing in front of her home talking with some friends who were parked on the shoulder of the highway when she of was hit by smith's pickup truck. kaitlyn was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. she was a happy bubbly teen who wanted to play football at her high school this year, but that chance was taken from her and her family. >> with her -- we are all angry. he took a precious part of our lives. >> i can't even put into words how i feel about it. >> reporter: four others were also hurt in that crash. we are told they're recovering in the hospital, but this morning, investigators are not releasing their conditions. meantime, smith faces several charges, including manslaughter by automobi

megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning.general manager says that about a half dozen of those track circuits have been adjusted or removed on this system, that they are now testing those circuits twice daily. when problems are degt detected, trains are slowed down in the affected area. "the washington post" says the track circuit problems are more widespread affecting four of metro's five lines. now, crews they say, according to this article, sometimes take the troublesome circuits offline creating what they refer to as dark spots in the system where trains cannot be seen by the operation center. now, metro's general manager john cato takes issue with the report calling it a gross exaggeration. he says while there have been issues found with the track circuits, he says it is nothing like the problem found with the circuit near the site of last month's deadly crash. >> that is something i would know about and that is something i would take an action on. if we the not track our trains, then we have a huge problem. if we cannot

megan? back to you. >>> a promise to rebuild after a fire nearly destroys a neighborhood landmark. the suburban house in pikesville has been serving people since 1950. abc2 news cheryl conner is live with what is next for them. >> reporter: good morning. here's the scene in front of the suburban house restaurant. you can see that windows are boarded up and charred debris from inside now lines the front of the building. it's heart breaking for so many people in the community who consider the restaurant a home away from home. more than 30 people were inside the restaurant 5:00 yesterday evening when the fire was reported. firefighters say someone reported hearing a pop coming from the storage room and then seeing the flames.

megan mcgrath just arrived on the scene.what's going on here? >> reporter: this is a police-involved shooting that happened at an apartment complex on eagle's nest court. two montgomery police officers fired their weapons in this incident and they were responding to a 911 disconnect call. an adult male is dead on the scene. he was armed with a gun and a knife. we don't know if he was shot by the officers or someone else. that's still under investigation, but at least the police officers are responding to the disconnected 911 call and they did fire their weapons. this unfolded around 2:40 when someone from the wearing station neighborhood called 9 is 911 and hung up. it is routine to dispatch officers when there's a hang-up call. they called for backup after arriving on the scene. addional officers arrived to find the man dead inside the apartment. he was suffering from a gunshot wound. we are told that a gun and knife were found next to the man's body. one of the two officers fired their service weapons. again, the man died
