. >> all right, for more on this, let's turn to our panel, joy reed, ari, and megan mccain, co authoran interesting title. all right, joy, tell me, 2500 people show up in lancing to say, leave us alone and why can't we talk about this? how much of an outrage is this going to help democrats going into november? >> in a lot of ways, i have lost my capacity for surprise when it comes to politics. this issue actually is surprising. there's almost an obsessive quality to the republican kind of obsession with women's health care when it comes to abortion and legislating women's health care issues whether it's planned parenthood or something like this, where basically these two women were told you can't talk about this. we men are legislating your fill in the word. it's sort of an infantalizing of women that is jarring to a lot of young women who aren't used to this '70s era politics. at the sate as well as the federal level, there's sort of an obsession with these issues among a lot of republican men. >> meghan, do you think a lot of republicans have to learn when you're speaking on this, y

you mentioned in the book with megan han mccain -- megan said smoked pot.of white folks who smoked pot and did not get arrested. >> i'm absolutely in favor of white folks not getting arrested. >> you want to extend that. >> for anything. we went to new orleans, we smoked pot. neither of us are regular. i've done i a few times in my life. it's done nothing for me. i think she's similar. people of color get arrested far more. you were talking about, ha keem, it's not about a public safety issue. when you talk about marijuana, there's no public safety component to it. no one is getting hurt from smoking marijuana. they may gain some pounds from getting the money chis, but nobody's getting hurt. i think when we look at marijuana versus alcohol versus prescription pills versus plenty of legal substances, it's right there in the middle. >> in fact, there's a sort of amazing exchange on the hill this week in which congressman gerald polis was -- had the d.a. administrative michelle lain hart who was testifying. he asked her what are the negative health concern of

>> i think megan is right in the big problem for john mccain in 2008 was the objective conditions of and the challenge that the president faces is actually the unemployment rate. whatever he says or doesn't say about it, at the end of the day that's what's going to drive voters. that's the far bigger concern than the comment. i think they're going to try to make hay out of it. i would say, the point he's making about the difference between where the private sector and public sector is at is a really important one. we've lost 600,000 in the public in the sector since the beginning of the recession largely on the local and state level. that didn't have to happen. those layoffs didn't have to happen if we extended revenue sharing from the government. >> he is right in saying that the private sector is doing better than the public sector, is he not? >> yeah. >> that was his point, this comment was taken out of context. >> i think it's important to distinguish between what's going on with state and local governments and what's going on in the private sector. i think the word fine in that
