news 4's megan mcgrath just arrived on the scene of a shooting then crash in northeast d.c. megan, good morning. what happened? >> reporter: good morning, eun. yes, this is a shooting, but it looks like a fire scene at the moment. we have firefighters on the scene. they are actually putting out a small blaze that started at the front of the car involved in the shooting incident here. we're in northeast washington, 17th and monroe. police tell us a little after 4:00 a.m. this morning, there was some sort of a shooting in the area. the victim, described just as a male, we don't know if it was a juvenile or adult, was shot and tried to flee the scene by getting in their car and driving away. didn't make it very far. the car left the roadway. he lost control. the vehicle went up onto the sidewalk. it actually hit a retaining wall here right at the intersection of 17th and monroe. the person who was shot has been transported to the hospital. they are in critical condition. investigators are here on the scene trying to piece together exactly what happened collecting physical eviden

megan mcgrath is live in northwest with more now. morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. yesterday was the deadline for demonstrators to get their belongings together and leave freedom plaza. as you can see, we still have a tent city. folks are still in place. that is going to be the case for up to four months. as the deadline approached yesterday, u.s. park police went to organizers and asked for a private meeting. in that meeting the police told them they could stay here in the plaza again for up to four months so long as the protesters shared the space with other groups that come here to the city for other events. there's one such event that's this weekend. the martin luther king memorial dedication. apparently, there's some events down here. again, they've asked the protesters to be respectful and to share the space with folks coming down for that event. as you can see, the protesters have not been moved out. many were fearful there would be arrests yesterday. that did not happen. we're waiting for official word from the nationa

news 4's megan mcgrath joins us live from the courthouse with the latest. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, eun. brittany norwood told police she had been sexually assaulted, two masks men attacked her and killed jayna murray inside the lululemon store. both the prosecution and the defense admit this was an elaborate lie, that norwood's guilt is not being disputed or not being argued in this case. the question is whether this murder was premeditated. if it was, she could get life in prison without parole. the jurors have seen some very graphic photos, including pictures of the hammer, the wrench, and other tools used to kill jayna murray. a police officer showed jurors norwood's pants. the crotch cut out allegedly by norwood herself. another officer who interviewed norwood following the murder says she was upset, that norwood said she tried to save murray during the attack. the prosecution says norwood's lies and coverup prove premeditation. the defense says the coverup actually proves the opposite. it was so poorly executed that it shows norwo

megan mcgrath is live at the courthouse with the latest. ing. >> reporter: good morning, eun. this was a high profile case that received a lot of media attention. choosing a jury could take a day and a half. they have a pool of 300 people they'll be choosing from. those folks will be questioned by attorneys. they'll be questioned about what they know about this case. whether they have any opinions or connections that would prevent them from sitting on the jury. brittany norwood is accuseded of killing her lululemon coworker jayna murray last march. police say that norwood beat murray to death inside the store after closing and then cut herself and tied herself up in an attempt to cover up the crime. police say norwood told investigators she was also a victim, that two masked men sexually assaulted them and then killed murray. police, though, say that story soon fell apart. the dna evidence just didn't support it. and norwood was later charged with murder. once jury selection is completed, then we're going to move on to the opening arguments

megan mcgrath is live with more on this. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, joe. >>> a lot of people thought this protest would end with arrests yesterday. there was a deadline of 2:00 p.m. for everyone to pack up their things and leave freedom plaza. as you can see behind me here, we still have a tent city. in fact, protesters have been told by police it's okay with them if they stay in freedom plaza, extend their stay up to four months, so long as they share the stay with other groups who come into town for other planned events. this deal was brokered with police yesterday late afternoon. u.s. police asking organizers for a private meeting. the u.s. park service is the organization that grants the permits, and it remains to be seen what their official stand on this is. you can see the deadline at 2:00 p.m. yesterday passed, and police did not clear everybody out. there were no arrests as many suspected what happened yesterday afternoon. many of these protesters say they're in this for the long haul, that they w

news 4's megan mcgrath joins us from the scene now live with more. megan. >> well, jim, there are surveillance cameras both inside and outside of this metro bus. and investigators are going to be looking at those pictures trying to figure out exactly who is responsible for this murder. now, it happened very early this morning after 11:30, a little before midnight or so. a person on board this w4 metro bus was shot. this individual was a passenger on board the bus. we're told they transported him to the hospital, but he died en route. they have not released the name of the person who died. all police will say is that it is an adult male. alabama avenue is still closed in the yar of 21st street. we're toldly police that it could be a while before they're able to open this traffic. a detour is in place through the area. exactly what happened, what was the motive behind this shooting, with all of that is still under investigation. the metro bus drivers was not involved and was not injured in this incident. again, still an active scene here. we are seeing

news 4's megan mcgrath is following court developments now and joins us live from montgomery county.morning to you. >> good morning. this case is a little unusual. normally with a murder case, attorneys are arguing the guilt or innocence of a defendant. that is not what is happening here. whether brittany norwood killed jayna murray is not at question. the question is whether this is a premeditated murder. prosecutors say norwood placed a cell phone call to jayna murray after closing. norwood told murray she left her wallet in the store and needed to get back in. when norwood and puree reentered the store, prosecutors say norwood attacked murray. she used several weapons. to cover up the crime, prosecutors say norwood cut herself, tied herself up and made up a story about two male intruders. the defense, however, says it did not happen like that. they say murray was killed after norwood, quote, lost it in a heated argument, that norwood grabbed whatever was in reach and killed murray and it was the heat of the moment. they say it was not planned. prosecutors say murray suffered more

news 4's megan mcgrath is live now with details. megan, what's going on?et me step out of the way so you can see the area we're talking about. this is 295 up above the overpass at south capital street. we've got a situation with emergency repairs going on on the southbound side of 295. apparently, some sort of hole. they're concerned about debris falling from the overpass down onto south capital street. they have closed south capital in the southbound direction. you're not going to be able to go underneath this overpass. also, we're seeing an impact on 295 as well. the southbound side is down to one lane. it appears that there was some sort of a construction zone in the area where this has all happened. overnight, they had some sort of a problem. sounds like there's a pothole or something up there on that overpass. they're doing emergency repair work right now. they have everything squeezing by to the left. right now it's pretty early. the backups are not significant. but the longer this takes, the more we'll see the traffic stack up here. this could be a

news 4's megan mcgrath is live in clarksburg where police are concentrating their efforts today. how is it looking out there? >> well, barabara, we have a very intense police presence here in the 23000 block of clarksburg road. i'll step out of the way. they have a very large section of this road blocked off with police stap. they aren't allowing any regular traffic down the road at all. you can see all the police traffic here on the scene, one of which is parked straddling the roadway. the police seem to be focusing their attention in a wooded area to the right just off the shoulder of the road near a curve. if you are familiar at all with this area, this is an area just down from the liberty gas station here in the 23000 block of clarksburg road. police are not exactly saying what they are doing. we knew they were getting together to again resume their search for william. they searched an area not far from here. they found nothing. then this morning we were told that the area they'd be searching today was different, just a short distance from where they were yesterday. and they

and megan mcgrath has been following developments and joins us live with an update. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. first on the stand was a police officer off duty and working security at the hospital on march 12th. he says he met the ambulance that was carrying brittany norwood to the hospital that morning and collected her clothing and put those items in evidence bags for dna testing later. officer o'brien described norwood's wounds, cuts to the chest, legs and arm and a big gash on her head, and a inch cut parallel to her thumb, and that got his eye. jurors were told to his regard his answer. and officer o'brien admitted he first believed the wound to be a defensive one. he said i truly believed she was a victim when she came in. and o'brien was asked to remove several articles of clothing to the evidence bags and show them to the jury. he showed them a pair of blood-stained socks as well as yoga pants that had been ripped and cut in the crotch area. they are trying to show the cover-up that norwood's self inflicted wounds showed she had a presence of mind to try and make hers

megan mcgrath joins us. >> reporter: these are crime scene and autopsy photos. very disturbing images. the prosecutor wants to use them at the start of the trial before they are entered into evidence. the defense, though, says that's not fair to their client and it's now up to the judge to decide. >> it was a gruesome crime. murray was stabbed to death. all indications are that they put up a fight. prosecutors have graphic photos that they want to show to the jury in opening statement, and one is her dead inside the store, and then one of the accused at the scene. while prosecutors argue the photographs are key to the opening statement, the defense says their use at the start of the trial would be prejudicial to their client. as the judge ponders the arguments, jury selection resumed. the process is taking longer than expected, and the problem is pretrial publicity surrounding the case. the overwhelming majority of prois that correcttive jurors stood up. the judge is bringing in jurors one by one to question them about what they know about the case, whether they

news 4's megan mcgrath joins us live as day two of this trial begins. did morning to you. >> good morning. that's right. whether brittany norwood killed jayna murray was not a dispute in this case. norwood's own attorney admitted that she has. what is at the heart of this trial is meditation. the prosecutor says the murder was premeditated, that she lured janemy murray back to lululemon with the intent to kill her and that she should be convicted of first degree murder. but morewood's lawyer says the argument happened after an argument with murray. jurors heard testimony from several witnesses who stumbled on the crime scene, including the manager who came to open the store the next morning. she and a bystander entered, found murray lying face down on the floor and norwood tied up in the bathroom. officers testified norwood was injured and appeared to be trauma advertised. prosecutors say norwood's story began to unravel in the coming days. we are expecting the prosecution to present evidence in terms of exactly what didn't match up here and what brough

megan mcgrath joins us and tells us what is happening out there. good morning, megan. >> reporter: the union station metro station has re-opened but it was closed for about an hour and 15 minutes this morning, so affecting the people at the tail end of rush hour. at 8:45 this morning they experienced an electrical problem, and it was a spark that was on a component associated with the third rail, that's the electrical rail, inside the union station metro station. there were sparks that put off smoke and the smoke gathered in the tunnel prompting them to close the metro station for about an hour and 15 minutes. they had to single track trains between stations, and whenever you single track that causes big backups, and there were significant delays for a time this was all happening. and then on wednesday, the orange line had problems during the morning and evening rush hour, and a switch lost power, and that caused major issues and delays for people, and on tuesday night, there was chaos after a person was hit by a train at the claire ton metro stop,

megan mcgrath has the latest. >> reporter: it was a gruesome crime. janna murray was stabbed and blungeened to death, all indications are that she put up a fight. prosecutors have graphic photos that they want to show to the jury during the opening statement. one is of murray dead inside the store and also a picture of the accused brittany norwood at the crime scene. while prosecutors argue that the photographs are key to their opening statement, the defense says their use at the start of the trial would be prejudicial to their client. as the judge ponders the arguments, jury selection resumed. the process is taking longer than expected. the problem, pretrial publicity surrounding the case. when asked if they knew about the crime, the overwhelming majority of perspective jurors stood up. to ensure an impartial jury, the judge is taking each potential juror one by one into chambers to question them further about their knowledge and their opinions. this is taking an awful long time. jury selection is dragging on much longer than originally thought. >> j

that's where news4's megan mcgrath is now. does it look like they are there to stay there for a while? >> reporter: just take a look at freedom plaza. you can see we have all kinds of tents, all kinds of booths. people milling around. showing really no signs of leaving here. today is the deadline. supposed to be packing up and leaving freedom plaza. but many say they are not going do that. they are committed to the cause and say they are going to stay here even if that means being arrested. >> see what it was. >> reporter: james came to d.c. from indiana. if police attempt to move him from freedom plaza, he says they will have to take him in handcuffs. >> i'm not leaving. i will go to jail. i will get out, and i will come back. there's people here that will pay my bail and i will be right back. >> reporter: he is not alone. many of the demonstrators are prepared to be arrested. they have written the phone number of the group's legal counsel on their arms so they can place their phone call from lockup even if their belong rings

megan mcgrath is live in freedom plaza. looks like they can stay a little while. >> reporter: absolutely, barbara. tents are still in place. they were actually supposed to leave yesterday. that was the deadline, but then there was a deal worked out between the organizers and the u.s. park police. now, the organizers believe that they have a verbal agreement to stay here in freedom plaza for up to four months. now, that's up for some debate here. spoke a little while ago to the national parks service. they have agreed in the theory to allow them to stay, to extend their permit, which has expired. however, whether they can stay for up to four months, they say that that's unclear. they say there are other groups who have permits to be in this plaza, at various parts of the year in the four-month period, and they say they will have to work out the logistics, figure out if everyone is okay with sharing the space, whether this can happen. exactly how long they will be able to stay is still unclear, but the key here is they have h

news4's megan mcgrath is also there and joins us live with more.ood morning. >> well, good morning, barbara. this is actually a smaller scale search than what we saw over the weekend. about 20 or so officers here on the grounds of the old comcast building. that's located just off of 270 if you are familiar with this area. and there is also a second search going on at a different location in damascus. here at the comcast campus they are concentrating their efforts in the beginning on a wooded section that's near the parking lot area. they are also going to be taking a look down along 270. the fence line between this property and the highway. now, of course, they are looking for 11-year-old william mcquain. his mother, jane, was found stabbed and beaten to death inside of her condominium. william has not been seen since the end of september or beginning of october. jane mcquain's estranged husband curtis lopez has been arrested in north carolina and charged with her murder. the big question, though, is where is her son, william mcquain. i'm joined by

megan mcgrath has information on what's going on this morning. >> reporter: barbara, before the jury was brought in this morning, the judge, judge greenberg, listened to arguments from the prosecution to allow testimony about a telephone conversation that the victim, jayna murray, allegedly had with another coworker on the the day that she was murdered. now, prosecutors say that murray told this coworker that she had caught brittany norwood with store merchandise inside her purse and that she confronted her about stealing. the prosecution is trying to establish motive in this case. that norwood killed murray after murray caught her with that merchandise. but the judge said that she would not allow it. that jayna murray is dead and can't testify about that conversation. that it's hearsay and he simply won't allow it, won't let the jury hear about it. the jury spent another day looking at some very gruesome photos of the crime scene. right now a forensic expert is detailing blood splatter patterns inside the store. now, he says those patterns show that a substantial beating took place
