. >> news4's megan mcgrath has been in white plains all morning. she's live with a look at the conditions there. megan? >> reporter: well, yeah, just a little while ago, the snowflakes actually got to be quite large, and still snowing here. you can take a look at the impact that we're seeing on the roads. i wish i had better news to report. unfortunately, the roads are in very sloppy condition in this area. you can see the left lane is a little bit better than the right-hand lane, but neither lane is particularly great. we've seen a number of plows come by, and they haven't had their plows down. they've been salting, but they haven't had the blades down. not exactly sure what that's all about. at least headed in the northbound direction. about 20 minutes ago, though, on the southbound side, we did see sort of a caravan of six plow trucks with the plows down going alongside that stretch of road. that has improved the conditions on the southbound side. but on the northbound side, still a tough go. take a look at some video we shot out and about earlie

megan mcgrath was at the scene and has more for us now. >> reporter: an unusual sight in this chevy chase neighborhood. heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams and armored vehiclesere brought to frayman drive by neighbors who heard a bang. >> a bang bang bang. >> i thought it was an impact hammer, they had been doing some work in the basement. >> reporter: but it wasn't a hammer. it actually was gunfire. responding, police found shell casings outside the house. they also found the car of the homeowner's girlfriend. >> because of that and concerns for potential for domestic violence we called out our emergency response team that then responded. >> reporter: streets were closed, residents told to stay in their houses. parents dropping kids off at preschool were met by police officers. >> we're trying to get our kid foos school today but looks like the roads are closed. >> reporter: over the course of the next several hours, police made contact with the people inside the house. turns out no one was shot or hurt. investigators are interviewing those involved but at this point it appears there was no int

megan mcgrath is live in northeast d.c. with more on what they found and how long the search might take. >> reporter: well, aaron, let's talk a little about the search area. i'm standing in front of just a small piece of it. you see a police officer has the entrance to the park blocked off. that's the case all along this stretch of anacostia avenue. all of the entrances to the park are blocked off here. take a look at the map here. the green area, that is the search area. it's huge. 700 acres. stretches from route 50 to the anacostia freeway. sections of it are heavily wooded. we also have stretches that go along the anacostia river. this is a big challenge for police to cover all of this terrain. now for the first time, we have heard police refer to this as a recovery operation. police chief kathy lanier says that she hopes that 8-year-old relisha rudd is found alive. but at this point, they just can't ignore the possibility that khalil tatum killed the little girl and disposed of her body here at the park. that's because

let's go live to megan mcgrath. she's in ashton with more now. megan, any problems out there now? >> reporter: barbara, plenty of problems. as you can see, i'm still wearing my hat, because it's still very, very windy out here. and so, we're seeing power outages. we're also seeing road closures like the one behind me here. lots of problems this morning. the trouble began before the sun came up, in laurel a utility pole brought down by the wind sent power lines onto busy route 198. it was closed in both directions for the morning rush. downed trees and snapped branches caused big problems this morning. in silver spring, a large tree fell on top of a house. and in ashton, maryland -- >> another day, another storm. >> it was scary. it was, like, really the trees -- the tall trees were just bending over. >> reporter: some of those trees fell. utility poles snapped, and transformers blew. >> just sparks, just, like, when you hit your battery cable. >> it was, like, really great. >> there was green arcs, a power surge, pretty green sparks. >> a big humming. >> reporter: like many in the

megan mcgrath with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is a very dark and remote area. so police last night called off their search. you see the officers who are here looking over, protecting the area, making sure that nobody goes into the search area overnight. they are waiting for the sun to come up so that they can once again renew their efforts today. police searched the park all day yesterday. it was quite an effort, quite a lon of manpower thrown at this. for the first time we've heard police refer to this as a recovery operation. police chief kathy lanier says she hopes that 8-year-old relisha rudd is found alive. she says that they can't ignore the possibility that khalil tatum killed the little girl and disposed of her body here in the park. that's because police have uncovered some very disturbing evidence. on march 1st, that's the last time relisha was seen alive, and she was with tatum. on march 2nd, the next day, police say tatum bought contractor-sized trash bags. sources tell news4 that tatum also bought a shovel and l

news4's megan mcgrath spoke to her parents and teens about the possible ban. she's live in bethesda. tell us about what they said. >> reporter: barbara, go to just about any store that sells drinks, and you're no doubt going to see the sell of energy drinks, but some lawmakers in maryland are worried about the possible health risks to children, and the general assembly is considering legislation that would ban the sale of energy drinks to minors. they're known by different names, and come in a variety of flavors. but all promise a boost of energy. but so-called energy drinks would be off-limits to minors in maryland under a bill being considered by the general assembly. the proposed ban isn't too popular with some teens. >> people involved in athletic programs, i mean, everybody drinks them. personally, it's a little bit crazy to me. >> reporter: if passed, the bill would make it a misdemeanor to distribute or sell energy drinks to anyone uchbd 18. the first offense would carry a maximum fine of $500. give away a free sample to a minor, and the maximum fine wo

megan mcgrath and danella sealock tracking the travel spots to cause some problems. >>> but first, we'll go to storm team 4 meteorologist tom kieran now for more on the conditions we are dealing with right now. tom, good morning. >> good morning. storm team 4 radar showing no snow around the metro area. we are getting a little bit of light snow in far southern maryland in southern st. mary's county and then across the potomac into the northern neck of virginia. this area in pink is a little bit of light freezing drizzle east of richmond forward virginia tidewater. that's advancing to the north and east. there could be a little patch of freezing drizzle in the eastern neck over the next hour or two. farther west, just a few scattered places of some light, freezing drizzle. that's south of fredericksburg where we have a winter weather advisory in effect until noon today. watch out for that in calvert, charles, st. mary's, northern neck and spotslvania. a little freezing drizzle is possible otherwise clouds just coming through. and the other threat is the snow that melted overnight and crea

let's go live to news4's megan mcgrath now. she's in laurel where a power outage is making the morning commute a mess there. megan? >> reporter: yeah, we have a major road, routes 198 through laurel, completely shut down in both directions here because of power lines across the roadway. take a look at the traffic signal there. you can see that it also is out. we've got a detour in place. you see the cones across the roadway here, as well as the electronic sign trucks here. we are seeing folks getting a little confused as they come upon this detour here. it's dark, people aren't necess. we've seen plenty of folks stop. they want to make the right-hand turn, they can't. they sit there for a while. we've seen close calls with traffic behind them nearly rearending them. take it easy. if you drive through the area. the detour is between van dusen and 11th street on 198. the problem is downed power lines. in the neighborhood, just behind me here on laurelton drive, we've got a snapped power pole. it was snapped by the high winds. the
