megan mcgrath finished taking a ride on the rails and megan, the change is supposed to make this ride a little smoother. what do you think? >> reporter: you know i did notice a difference. they went to the manual system after that crash back in 2009. so you had an operator in the train starting and stopping the train. this morning the longer trains, the eight-car trains on the red line they have gone back to the automated system so it's now a computer that's actually accelerating and stopping the train. take a look at this video that i shot. i took a little trip here a short time ago. i went here from the grovener station in an eight-car train. when we came to the station and the computer started to brake, i have to say it was pretty smooth. i jumped off got on to one of the six-car trains which was going in the opposite direction to get back here to the live truck. those six-car trains, they are still being operated manually. so it was actually a person in the cab that stopped the train when we arrived. i did notice that it was a little bit jerkier than the smoother -- jerkier than t

news4's megan mcgrath with the good news this morning. this is good news. >> reporter: yeah it is good news. it was a rocky start for a lot of people who didn't realize that the greenbelt station was closed. they came here they were turned around. others jumped on the shuttle buses but the latest development which is very positive is that the greenbelt station is now back open. that happened within the last 40 minutes or so. we have normal operations at this point on the green line. now the problem was a pedestrian bridge that collapsed in berwyn heights. take a look at the video here. that happened yesterday. apparently it was hit by the boom of a crane and it just brought it crashing down on top of tracks that were used by both metro and m.a.r.c. train. they had to spend the entire night cleaning that debris off the tracks. they weren't able to do it in time for the start of the rush hour. so we did have a closure here for a while. as metro initially opened but they have now finished that clean-up work. we have seen trains going through

megan mcgrath was inside the courtroom and she joins us with more on what happens next. megan? just a short time ago, he told the judge the government's case against him is accurate. he admitted to jumping over the white house fence back in october. the breach was one of several in recent months and now changes are coming to the white house. it was last october, this cell phone video captured the scuffle that ensued on the front lawn of the white house after dominick arisagna scaled the fence. he punches secret service dogs before being brought down. he appeared in federal court this morning and pled guilty to a one count misdemeanor of entering a restricted space. he could face a maximum of one year in jail and a $100,000 fine. his arrest was just one in a series of recent fence-jumping incidents that focused attention on white house security and the fence itself. now changes are on the way. approval has been given to bolt steel spikes on top of the existing fence to make it harder to climb. other changes being considered include remacing the fence with a taller one that's ten

news 4 megan mcgrath live at the scene with more on what neighbors tried to do to alert the folks inside. >> reporter: melissa, you can see behind me we still have fire truck on the scene as well as some road closures in the area. rescue cpr on the scene but we've learned the resident has died. a second person trapped in the home is in critical condition fighting for their life. the fire started before 6:30 this morning in the 1000 block of kenyon street in northwest. neighbors realized what was going on and say they began pounding on the doors yelling for everyone to get out of the burning home. one neighbor said people even threw rocks at the upstairs windows just in case the people were upstairs asleep in that upper room. they say the flames and the smoke, though were just too intense for them to go inside and they had no choice but to wait for the fire department to arrive. >> the flames were coming -- completely out of the out of the window and the flames were jetting up 15 20 feet in the air. and then, you know we got out. >> reporter: and there was damage to the homes on either si

megan mcgrath is live at the university. what are you expecting there today? >> reporter: there are a number of events that will be happening all afternoon. april is actually sexual assault awareness month. today is the national day of action for the "it's on us" campaign a prevention campaign sponsored by the white house. a little while ago here on the campus we saw a number of students lining up to get. t-shirts for the campaign. they are going to be gathering later on wearing those teal t-shirts for a march scheduled to happen here on campus. . that gets underway at 12:30. it's all to bring awareness about the issue of sexual assault prevention and support for survivors. at 12:30 staff and students are going to be gathering here at the field house and they are going to march to kendall green carrying signs. there are also a number of other things scheduled. they will have booths with counselling services and support services. there's also another interesting project it's called the clothesline project. students are encouraged to write their personal experie

megan mcgrath is live with what changes the commuters should expect this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eun. it was a terrible crash that happened back in 2009. a metro train slammed into another train that was stopped on the tracks near the ft. tauten station. nine people died and many more were injured. in the wake of that crash, metro stopped using the automated system and they went to manual control of trains. well, ever since that accident metro has been making safety improvements and now they are at the point where they can return once again to the automated system. that is happening today. so the computer is going to handle the train that will be controlling the train. there will still be a person in the cab to open and close doors and to make announcements but the automated system will be handling acceleration. deceleration as well as stopping the trains. this is happening starting today on just the red line. only with the eight car trains. six car trains they need a software update and they'll be getting that. so they'll go over t

melissa mollet has some work arounds but first, megan mcgrath is where orange cones are going up thisund the national mall. making its way for some history. megan, good morning. what piece what's going on? >> reporter: well good morning. this is part of the on going construction that you can see behind me at the national museum of african-american history and culture. they have requested some road closures for the next several days in order to do some of that work and move big equipment around. this is going to be a problem for people who travel through this area. it's a very congested area, lots of tourists around this time of year. so we are going to definitely see some traffic tie-ups. now it gets under way today after the evening rush hour. 15th street take a look at the map, 15th street is going to be closed between jefferson drive and constitution avenue. starting today at 7:00 p.m. through tuesday. then when that closure is over with, we are going to see another closure in the area. madison drive. here's the map. madison is going to be closed between 14th and 15th streets. that

news4's megan mcgrath has details. good morning. >> reporter: well good morning. they are re-enacting things as they happened 150 years ago at ford's theatre and at the peterson house. you can see behind me here, the re-enactors, people in period costume that are participating. and this is going to be happening throughout the morning and people are welcome to come on down and take a look and be a part of this historical re-enactment. tenth street has been blocked off in front of ford's theatre. and that will be the case until about 8:00 this morning. there was a large vigil that happened last night. you can see in the video hundreds of people attended. now, at this point in the time line, president lincoln was inside the peterson house which is located across the street from ford's theatre. he at this point was fighting for his life. now they have a re-enactor who is portraying dr. charles leal and periodically he comes out to the steps of the peterson house and giving updates to people assembled outside. this is as it happened 150 years ago. at 7:22 the moment wh

news4's megan mcgrath is live with how that community is responding this morning. megan?>> reporter: well aaron, meridian hill park is popular with dog walkers and joggers and the 24-year-old glenn vert green used the park to find a victim. green was charged with kidnapping and theft and police released this surveillance video yesterday. they asked the public for help in finding their suspect. it shows a man in dark clothing walking in the area near the time of the assault. now police say that green saw the victim jogging in the neighborhood. he grabbed her and dragged her down the alley and raped and robbed her. a rally is bringing attention to

let's get to news 4's megan mcgrath with details about who this person is. megan, good morning. >> reporter: well, with barbara, we just got new information in the last couple of minutes about the person who jumped the white house fence. he is from hayward, california he's been identified as 54-year-old jerome hunt. the latest breach happened on the south side of the white house right around 10:30 sunday night. the jumper scaled the fence but was immediately arrested. it's the latest in a string of such incidents. tourists say it's a shame. they would hate to see increased security get in the way of seeing the white house. >> i feel like the accessibility is going to continue to get worse and worse and people will have less and less access to see this beautiful area. >> i think it would be sad if we had to put a big border so the public couldn't see the white house anymore. it's a balance between safety and access to the public to be able to see what belongs to all of us. >> reporter: the white house fence has been under scrutiny following several breaches in

news 4 megan mcgrath is live with the damage in a neighborhood that was pretty hard hit. >> they had some pretty intense winds. that wind brought down power lines, including here on nelson street. take a look at what happened here. a downed power line actually fell on this car and this is what is left of dan gray's once beautiful mercedes convertible. it burst into flames last night and really there is not much left here. dan explains exactly what happened. >> we heard a big crack and the power line came down actually down that way, and then it started to burn first from one end to the other, it was geysering, it was like a slow burn fuse and unfortunately it ended up right in the front of my car and my car caught fire. >> and talking to dan, he says really at this point all that's left are the memories of his car. so he's going to be looking for a new sports car here. this was his baby. it had low miles too. in term of the power outages in the area they have made some progress overnight. we're not seeing the numbers of people without power that we did last night. we still have scatt

news4's megan mcgrath is live with what you need to know. pretty scary situation, megan. >> reporter: yeah it was a scary situation. it happened in broad daylight outside of the main entrance to ravensworth elementary school. they say that the victim is a juvenile. now, it was 3:15 on friday afternoon. police say a man came up behind this boy and grabbed him and tried to lure him away. now, the boy did offer resistance he fought back he was able to get away and was not injured. but this suspect is still on the loose. now, here's the description. he is a white male 20 to 30 years old. 6 feet tall with blond hair. at the time he was wearing a black long sleeved shirt and jeans. anyone who may have seen this person in the area, you are asked to call police. back to you. >>> death toll rising in nepal. right now more than 3,600 people are confirmed dead. that number is likely to go up. rescue efforts are continuing but it's tough out there. landslides making it difficult to access some areas. some places can only be accessed by helicopter. you're

news 4 megan mcgrath talking to census bureau staffers in suitland as they arrived at work and has thist. >> reporter: you can see behind me here that the main gate to the census headquarters building is still closed although the rest of the campus is open for business. but it is a sad day for many who work here. in the middle of the crime spree, the suspect drove here to the main gate and that's where the security guard, 59-year-old lawrence buckner, was fatally shot. employees who sheltered in place in their offices when the shooting happened last night, well they were given the day off today. the rest of the staff came in two hours late. workers we spoke to praised the security staff here. they say they do an excellent job. and they are saddened by the loss. >> it's tough, because you come to work and you are protecting the people here at the bureau and you end up getting shot and i feel so bad for his family. >> reporter: the fbi still trying to figure out why the gunman drove here. was it by happenstance or did he or his wife have some kind of a connection to the kren iscensus bure

let's get right to news 4 megan mcgrath who is outside the court this morning with a look at what we can expect today. >> reporter: the justices in a matter of hours set to hear arguments in a landmark case that could legalize same-sex marriage across the country. a line started tormenting days ahead. these are interested parties trying to secure seats inside the courtroom to secure seating. do same sex couples have a constitutional right to marry and secondly do states have to recognize same-sex marriage when the marriage occurred in states where it's legal. the justices will listen to two hours of arguments this morning. in terms of when we could have a decision on this landmark case that's expected to come sometime in late june. >>> it is now 5:25. the man arrested for the murder of an fbi agent in stafford county is in jail this morning, 26-year-old antoine gray johnson of upper marlboro is charged with first degree murder. police say he confronted fbi agent jeremy brown home. >> the first thing i can remember is my mom came downstairs to make sure i didn't get shot. >> police sa

our megan mcgrath has more from sterling, dominion high school, and a report on how the saga will affect the team during its biggest competition yet. >> reporter: tightly bounded bubble wrap, the red baron team robologo's stolen robot, arrived back home to dominion high school. >> honestly i didn't think i'd see it. >> reporter: it's been a long journey for this team. >> can they do it again? >> reporter: from a second place victory at the robotics regionals in knoxville to heartbreak when their van, the robot inside was stolen. then the community rallied around the team, giving them the funds to build a replacement robot so they could go on to the world championship in st. louis. the icing on the cake, word that the red baron had been found in a wooded area in tennessee and was headed home. unfortunately, the team left this morning for the championship before the red baron arrived. but they're happy to have him back. >> we're thrilled that we're getting it back. we did not expect anything out of this. and we're also still excite birthday the support we've received from the community. >>

megan mcgrath live in suit land at the census bureau where employees are expected to return to work today. >> reporter: that's right. they are going to be returning later on this morning. but they should know that the main gate at least for now is closed here at the u.s. census bureau. you can see behind me here, the tape that crosses the entrance. and we've seen a number of cars try to turn in and they're being turned away by authorizes at the gate. now, some pretty frightening moments for people who worked here but they will be returning to their offices today. this all began when a man armed with a gun kidnapped his wife on t street in northeast. they ended up here at the gate of the census bureau in suitland maryland. a security guard, 59-year-old lawrence buckner, saw the gunman and his wife arguing inside the car. when he approached, the gunman opened fire and buckner was fatally shot. many census bureau workers, they heard the shots and said it was a very scary and dicey situation. >> the security guard was down because he was in a yellow vest and i saw a guy driving away really qu
