news4's megan mcgrath live on the scene with more on what happened there. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, aaron. you can see behind me here that the northbound traffic is still being detoured off of the g.w. parkway on to the spout run parkway. and that's going to be the case here for a little while longer. now, within this last 15 or 20 minutes or so however we did see a truck loaded with sand arrive here on the scene. that sand is going to be used to mop up the oil spill that is further down the road. that's what's causing the problem here. overnight, there was a car that had a problem with their engine th and metal debris across the northbound lanes of the g.w. parkway. that's why it's closed. take a look at the map here. you'll get a better idea for the trouble spot, the area that's close. we're talking about spout run and the cia exit. not sure exact he how much longer it will be closed. but they are making some progress. they have got some additional crews and some equipment here on the scene so hopefully we'll start to see some relief

news4's megan mcgrath is by the l'enfant plaza metro station where smoke filled the tunnel back in january there. megan, what's happening today? >> reporter: well there's a big hearing that's going to be taking place, eun so metro is going to be under the microscope and they have to answer a lot of questions. the ntsb is beginning a two-day hearing today into that deadly smoke incident that happened in tunnel near the l'enfant plaza metro station. a woman died back in january when smoke went into the train. the train was in the tunnel and the ntsb wants to know what went wrong and what needs to be changed to make sure such a thing never happens again. the investigators will be focusing on a couple of different things. specifically let's take a look. metro's infrastructure and conditions leading to the electrical arcing that produced the smoke down in that tunnel. they're also going to look at emergency response and the evacuation. there's been a lot of criticism about how long it took to get people out of that tunnel and to safety. the hearing gets underway at 9:00 a.m. and will continue t

news4's megan mcgrath has more on this breaking news. megan?f you look behind me here you can see that the water has receded. this ever been -- they have been able to shut off the water from the water main break, but all of the gravel and the debris that we have here across the roadway. now this is westbound king street. you can see that we're down to one lane getting by to the left because of the water main that broke overnight. we have an issue with 395. headed south on 395 that ramp taking you westbound on to king street that ramp is completely closed. we'll make you go off to the left, head east. at that point you could do a u turn. a light volume of traffic. still kind of early this the morning so we're not seeing any major traffic tie-ups. but of course they haven't begun the repair work yet. so this is going to be with us for a while. this is obviously a very heavily travelled road. king street, so we are expecting some traffic tie-ups later on this morning as they wait for this repair truck to come and then get their work underway. now

news4's megan mcgrath is talking to riders and getting their reaction after learning that some doors were opening while the trains were in motion. megan? >> reporter: well, eun we have moved down to the platform here at the west falls church metro station. a train pulled out seconds ago here. so as you can see it's pretty quiet, but it's very early in the commute. we are expecting things to get very, very crowded later on this morning because metro has taken 100 of the 4000 series cars out of service so they can do safety inspections. here's why. take a look at this video. this was shot by a passenger using their cell phone. you can see the doors to the 4000 series car are open. they have been having a problem with those doors opening unexpectedly. you can see here that the train is actually in motion going through a tunnel. so obviously some safety concerns there. and that has prompted metro to take 100 of these 4000 series cars out of series so that i can make repairs if necessary. so we are expecting crowded conditions along the rails here today, friday and through the weekend. the

news4's megan mcgrath is telling us what this means for commuters this morning. megan, good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning eun. it means that things will be crowded on metro not just today but friday and through the weekend. so that they can do safety inspections on these 4000 series car. passenger using their cell phone. it shows the problems that they have been having with the doors on these older 4000 series cars. they open up unexpectedly and in this case, the train was actually traveling through a tunnel when it happened. obviously a big safety concern so metro has pulled 100 of these 4000 series cars. they have been taken out so inspections and repairs can be done. metro will be running fewer eight-car trains and running six-car trains instead. of course, fewer cars, shorter trains, that means more crowded trains. so we are expecting to see some pretty tight conditions here beginning this morning with this first rush hour. now, we're here at the west falls church metro station. they just opened their doors a short time ago. very early. the f

news4's megan mcgrath with what's causing this problem. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, aaron, good morning. it was a water main break that blew overnight. just in the last few minutes or so we are seeing equipment arriving. we have a backhoe here and the crew is standing right there at the top of that ramp. the water -- they have been able to shut that off and it's receded but we have all kinds of gravel and mud and there are cracks in the pavement where the water was gushing up earlier this morning. actually, we have some video to show you of that water coming out of the crack in the pavement there. now, this water main broke overnight. we have quite the impact here on king street. king street headed down to one lane getting by on the left. so we are starting to see traffic slow down a bit as they go through the area. also a very busy ramp. the king street -- westbound king street ramp off of 395 that ram is closed completely you to go to eastbound ramp and do a u turn in the area. they haven't started the repair work so this wil

the ntsb hearing will go on for two days and news4's megan mcgrath is outside the l'enfant plaza metro station with more on what we'll hear. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. metro is going to be under the microscope later on this morning as the ntsb begins a two-day hearing into that deadly smoke incident that happened in a tunnel near the l'enfant plaza metro station. a woman died back in january when smoke filled a train that was down in that tunnel. now, the ntsb wants to know what went wrong and what safety procedures need to be changed to make sure that it never happens again. investigators today will focus on a few specific areas including metro's infrastructure and conditions leading to the electrical arcing that produced the smoke down in that tunnel. they're going to look at emergency response and the evacuation. there's been a lot of criticism about how long it took to get people out of the tunnel and to safety. the hearing gets underway at 9:00 a.m. this morning and at ntsb headquarters and will continue through tomorrow. back to you in the studio. >> than
