news 4's megan mcgrath is live there. >> reporter: if you look at our live came, you can see some of the pretreating that's happened here in advance of this storm c systeming through here. we can see the stripes. that's the brine or the salt solution that was put down on the roadway. we're on 270 in the urbana area. not seeing any precipitation yet, but we're told it is heade in our direction. of course, just in time for rush hour, which is going to be a problem here thi morning. they are ready. they're prepared. the pretreating has been de. take a look at video we shot early this morning. our first stop of the day was at a salt dome. that was in the gaithersburg area. you can see all of the activity that happened early this morning. i think we g this video around 4:00 this morning. all of the trucks loading up with salt. they have finished that process. at this point, those trucks are now deployed. as we drive along, we've seen them here and there, parked along t shoulders of the major roads in the area. at this point, they're in stand by mode, waiting for the sleet or freezing rain

news 4's megan mcgrath is in gaithersburg with the latest on road conditions. >> reporter: hey, guys. you can see we're at a salt dome here in gaithersburg. a lot of activity early this morning. look at the le of snowplows. it actually wraps around the salt dome. there along the side is where they're loading the trucks up with t o salt andther things they're going to need once this wintry mix hits the area. we'reinot s any precipitation at this point. it's not going to come north to this area for a little while yet, but you can see they are whatever ready for comes our way. we are expecting that wintry mix, of course, during the morning rush hour. so never great timing for that sort of thing. we've s seene school systems in the area delaying. hasn't happened in montgomery county, but things could change he morning progresses. we'll keep you updated on that. as you make your way to work this morning, keep in mind this will start to kick in as the morning wears on. it could get slippery out there. also something to remember, because we haven't been in this mode for a while, if you encou

. >> let's go live to megan mcgrath. >> reporter: it really is a massive breach. marriott and starwood merged two years ago and starwood operates hotels under a number of names including the westin we're talking about very high-profile properties here. let's take a look at the specifics. the breach was confirmed on november the 19th. the unauthorized access, though, dates back to 2014. this involves reservations made through the starwood guest registry and it includes preferre guest accounts for starwood. now, 500 million guests cou be affected. now for 327 million of those people, the personal information compromised includes a combination of name, date of rth, phone numbers and addresses. it is unclear at this point if some of the payment card information waspr cised or not. apparently marriott uses two forms of encryption. it's unclear whether both forms were taken in this breach. we've been talking to starwood guests. here's their take on all this. >> i am a preferred guest. i'm n really worribout it if they have my name. doesn't matter if they have my address

megan mcgrath is live with a look at what you can d to help keep kids safe. megan? >> reporhar: well,s right. the bottom line here is that kids are catching the school bus in the morning at roughly th same time that a lot of adults are scrambling around trying too get t on time. unfortunately some of the drivers out there are not stoing for these schoo buses. they're going around them instead, which can be very, very dangerous. in montgomy county, they identified five school buses -- bus areas of concern. drivers are supposed to stop when they s the flashing lights come on, but toowbxm oft doesn't happen, putting kids at risk. >> also at the time the bus is coming, all the cars is rushing. >> reporter: officials have identified five bus stops in montgomery county of conecern. w signs are going up in those reas reminding drivers it's illegal to drive around a school bus that is dropping off or picking up kids. the signs are going in in the 8800 block and four other areas. >> with these signs maybe that will be nanother reminder. >> it will help people be more happen

. >> megan mcgrath is downtown as workersre getti ready for a flooding test.t are you seeing right now? >> reporter: a lot of activity. 17th street is still closed but quick working prett of this. a lot of people doesn't realize there's a levy along 17th street. it was built back in 2014. the event of a flood, they can snap the metal panels into place a cordon off the entire area. today pheycticed putting it up. a detour greeted commuters as they tried to use 17thtreet on the national mall this morning. the road closed to both cars and pedestrians, as work crews practiced snapping the flood levy wpll into e. the area is vulnerable to flooding. this was the scene backn 2006 when several government buildings took on water after heavy rain. to keep that sort of thing from happening again, the levy was built. the stone walls on either side of 17th street are permanent. when needed, aluminu panels can be snapped into place. >> 27 aluminum panels go . they are that water barrier. they're raising up 19 feet abole seal. as the water rises, this wall will block that fr

. >> megan mcgrath has a look at some of those changes. hi, megan. >> hey, guys. this is all about keeping pedestrians safe, by changing the timing of thos crosswalk signals, to allow people cross the streets a couple of seconds before they change. they're actually further out into the crosswalk and hopefully more visible. crossing a busy street in d.c. can be tricky business. cars making turns at intersections are supposed to eyeld to pedestrians in the crosswalk, but t don't always do it. >> you got a lot of people blowing the crgswalk, mak the right turn on red without a full stop and it happens all the time.ut >> what if pedestriansot a ead start crossing the street so that they're further in the csswalk and more visible when turning vehicles get the green light. according to transportation e experts, th three to five extra seconds, that little head start, can significantly reduce pedestrian collisions. so starting today 90 intersections in the district are being retimed. >> give an opportuety to pedestrian traffic to step out of the sidewalk on tohe crosswalk

megan mcgrath will break how it affects your commute. >> reporter: metro is trying to improve and expand service in order to lure riders back to the system in order to boost ridership. these improvements would come at a cost, about $20 million. d.c.,an mar and virginia would have to foot the bill. take a look at the improvements here. they include making all cars eight-car train and instituting a $2 flat fee fare on weekend and extending rush hour service. in addition to the cost of these seice improvements, there are other costs going up within the budget. more money is needed to pay for increases in pay. more money is needed f met access service. so that is the down side here. but you also have this other piece where service could be expanded and improved, which would certain make a lotf people happy. they are taking a look, beginning a discuss of this budget and these items today. >> thanks, megan. >>> a new on older fathers. how the health of the baby could be impacted. be impacted. >> and we're talking to execute a search warrant when wor an arrest warrant, we'd line up and we'd put

. >> news 4' megan mcgrath is there for us this morning. what can you tell >> reporter: well, we can tell you that the damage here is extensive. the restaurant is not going to open any time s if you look behind me here, you can see all the charred debris that's still here on the sidewalk along 7th street. inside, it is just a charred mess. it looks like very ltle, if anything, can be salvaged here. take a look at t vid here, the cell phone video. this is the situation that greeted firefighters when they arrived here on the scene. just intense flames shooting out of the second floor windows there. it was a very difficult fire to actually battle here for a couple of reasons. first of all, there were propane tanks up on the roof of the restaurant itself. that complicatedrs matte and then, of course, we had the very blustery and windy conditions last night as this fire was raging. those winds just kind of fanning the flames. so a difficult situation. fortunately, though, firefighters were able to get a handle on things. they prevented the fire
