>> i think that the top priority here is to make sure everyone is able to pay their respects to the queen in a safe manner. so i think all the different security apparatuses that you have in the uk as well as all the foreign dignitaries that are coming in are working closely together to make sure that happens. i would imagine this will be the safest place in the world over the next couple of days due to the coordination of many governments across the world. >> peter, you cover, you've covered so much international news. queen elizabeth was on the front for so many years. she would say she knows the politics, their fathers, too. there are so many people coming out for this funeral. i wonder if there's ever going to be an event like this that will rival the number of dignitaries, who's who that's coming out to see somebody off. not to mention the sheer numbers of people across this country and even the world who felt a kinship with her. >> i think you're right. the mix of dignitaries and every day people is what makes this so remarkable, right. is that she did in fact know every royal leader. she met 13 american presidents. she had 15 prime ministers under her, during her reign and yet there is this sense that the every day people there felt a connection with her that they haven't always felt with their own elected leaders at times. that's what i think makes this different. this is not a right left event in a moment when our politics here and in europe are so divided. this is not a moment where you know, folks are dwelling on policy issues, although those are raised. the history of the british empire and colonies of course are being discussed, but for her farewell, i think it is a moment where people have come together across lines and will pay respects for the better aspects of what she represented and they can discuss the rest of that on some other occasion. >> and peter, isn't that what's so foreign to us about what is set up here in the united kingdom? megan fitzgerald is live from ukraine. megan, what are you seeing, tell us about this. >> reporter: so just within the last hour, we heard from president zelenskyy who is calling on world leaders to label russia a state sponsor of terrorism. he says not doing so would be betrayal. and, of course, this comes after this horrific discovery in the forest of izium which was a city that he just visited days ago on wednesday. what investigators are saying they found among the bodies that they exhumed today, there was a mass grave of ukrainian soldiers where they saw ropes around their necks, hands died behind their backs. they found bodies of families, children, middle age, elderly bodies. and the majority of them showed signs of torture and a violent death. there are investigators on the scene right now processing this scene. the bodies will be transferred to the forensic examiner to identify them and they will be laid to rest once more. the concern here, katy, is that this isn't even the worst of it. as the ukrainians have been able to force the russians out of these areas, this is what we're starting to see. we saw this in bucha several months ago. and the fear is that this will be even worse because the areas that we're talking about, the kharkiv region, down in the south, these are regions that have been occupied by the russians for months as opposed to bucha was just several weeks. and so right now we know that there are some 30,000 war crime investigations that are taking place. 20,000 of them are for civilians and the big concern here is that that number will just continue to rise, katy. >> meganmakes you wonder what russia might do with its back up against the wall if this is what they were doing as they were pushing forward and taking territory. what will they do if they're being forced to retreat? >> that's a hard question. i don't have a clear answer to it. underscore how horrific this is. the ukrainian forces are targeting russian soldiers and their weapons and other military targets. and in response, the russians attack electricity, they attack dams, they are terrorizing ukrainian citizens and i think we can't lose site of that asymmetry in this war. with respect to what might be the response, again, i don't know. i think we should not overestimate putin's craziness. i think that sometimes there's a habit to do that and say if he's going to be cornered he's going to use a nuclear weapon. i tend to believe that is just a threat because at the end of the day putin is not isolated internationally. he's isolated in the west. he's not isolated in the global south, he's not is

megan heys, former special assistant to president biden, the director of message planning. alice and megan, good morning. thank you for sharing part of your holiday weekend with us. alice, first to you, in that speech last night, donald trump went after joe biden. he spent a lot of time talking about joe biden who is not going to be on the ballot in november in pennsylvania. how much is that messaging going to boost mastriano and oz who both have been trailing in recent polling? >> not very much, but you're right, boris, for someone who went to pennsylvania to talk about oz and mastriano, the former president talked a lot about himself, and the current president. and that is going to be, i think, the message moving forward. former president trump referred to the president biden as an enemy of the state. and really lashing out on the -- what he sees as criticism that president biden has made to former president trump and his supporters over the last few weeks. and just a fresh recap, biden r really criticized what he called maga republicans and extreme maga republicans for their election denials, for their support for january 6th, and for also not having any problem or criticizing the fbi raid on mar-a-lago. the alternate reality view of all of that criticism from donald trump last night was astounding. he viewed those criticisms as the biden administration and the democrats overreaching and with regard to the elections, he says this is sensering free speech, with regard to january 6th, he says that is imprisoning political protesters, and with regard to mar-a-lago, he says this is the democrats and the fbi and doj raiding the homes of political enemies. it is just astounding the different way that they view what president biden has talked about. from a political standpoint, clearly threats to democracy are going to be center stage for both sides. i happen to think stepping back, when you look at what is top of mind for the american people, moving into the general election, sure, threats to democracy are at the top of the list. but even more of importance to the american people are cost of living, jobs and the economy. those issues rank higher than threats to democracy, but, boris, there is no doubt we're going to hear this theme as a drumbeat from now until november. >> and, megantrump more agg aggressively recently in the philadelphia speech. it is not really a side of joe biden that we have seen a whole lot of, how does that wind up helping democrats if donald trump isn't on the ballot? >> well, look, these are values that the president ran on in 2020. it is not surprising heading into the midterms that these are the same values he would be running on. battle for the soul of the nation was a drumbeat during our campaign. the president has done a lot with democrats to run on with the inflation reduction act, the chips bill, the infrastructure loss, he provided some leadership for folks to run on heading into the midterms and that will be part of his message. >> so, alice, trump's rally, you know, he's stumping for gop candidates in pennsylvania, but to some degree, it was a preview, the ground work for a possible campaign in 2024. doesn't that stand to overshadow some of the candidates that are actually running ten weeks from now? >> that's a big fear. and i s
