i'm megyn kelly. many americans awoke to the heartbreaking news today that a young black mother had been killed and her young son wounded after a nearly six-hour standoff with police on monday. what was missing from some of those initial reports, however, was the fact that gaines was allegedly pointing a shotgun at the responding officers as she sat on the couch with a 5-year-old child. police were attempting to serve arrest warrants to gaines and a man named kareem courtney early monday. no one answered at the apartment, but the officers could hear voices inside, including those of children. here's how police described what happened next. >> they could clearly see a female that they believed to be ms. gaines seated on the floor, a child nearby, who immediately began to wield a shotgun around, bringing up to ready position, pointing it directly at the officers there to serve the arrest warrant. the entire time, throughout the afternoon, she repeatedly would point the weapon at our personnel. for hours

ailes has now been accused of sexual harassment by more than 20 women, including fox news anchor megyn kellynd former anchor gretchen carlson. earlier this week, another former fox news host also accused ailes of sexual harassment. andrea tantaros says she repeatedly reported ailes's harassment to senior fox executives last year. she says she was demoted and then taken off the air. the former head of booking at fox news has said ailes sexually harassed her for two decades. laurie luhn told "new york magazine" that fox news knew about the harassment and helped cover it up. she said the harassment amounted to psychological torture and ruined her life. luhn called ailes a predator and said her duties included luring young female fox employees into one-on-one situations with ailes that she knew could result in harassment. "new york magazine" has also reported ailes ran his own black graham corporation -- black room operation out of fox news, in which he used fox money to hire private detectives and political operatives who carried out ailes's personal campaigns, including targeting journalists.

welcome to "the kelly file," everyone, i'm megyn kelly. for days the republican presidential nominee has been faced with a series of negative headlines, and it would appear voters are taking note. as a brand new fox news poll finds mr. trump now trailing hillary clinton by ten percentage points. a month ago clinton was up by six. and over the past 24 hours, there have been reports after reports after reports suggesting, among other things, that republicans have started to consider abandoning mr. trump en masse, that senior party leaders are discussing how to replace him should he drop out of this race, and then there's this talk of an intervention by close advisers in hopes of restarting his approach to his campaign. rnc head ryan priebus, rudy giuliani, and newt gingrich are all reported attendees at the intervention, but when asked about it today, trump's campaign manager denied knowledge of a plan. >> this is the first i've heard about that. the campaign is focused and moving forward in a positive way. the only thing we have for interve

i'm megyn kelly. exactly seven days after the end of the democratic national convention in philadelphia, hillary clinton is seeing her biggest polling bounce in nearly six weeks. and that is not all. in multiple battleground states, critical to winning the white house, new polls now show mrs. clinton is leading. in florida, she's up by six points. in pennsylvania, a state trump wants, she's up by 11 points. michigan, she has a nine-point lead. lots of white working class voters there, considered to be trump voters, but she's up 41 to 32%. and in new hampshire, a whopping -- yeah, wow. 17 points in that state there. we have a big lineup for you tonight including larry sabado from the university of virginia center for politics. he's got new projections state by state. and then bill bennett, former education secretary and host of the bill bennett podcast weighs in on the state of the race. but we begin with senior national correspondent john roberts reporting from portland, maine, as a trump rally there
