mel, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, guys, still a lot of equipment on the scene here. we have d.c. hazmat crews standing by and what you're seeing here is washington gas crews getting ready to go in with a digger into the school here. as you mentioned two hours going we got reports that was some kind of water main break and water in the the basement. several feet we're told and we're also seeing emergency lights inside the school going off as well. one thing we noticed is strong smell of natural gas. what i'm told is that some of the water got into the boiler room and compromised some of the natural gas lines and so washington gas is here now trying to work to shut off that gas. hazmat crews really here standing think case anything were to happen but they don't believe it will. certainly, whenever you deal with natural gas and a leak there could be safety issues for the crews. that's why they're here. we don't know yet as far as washington gas. we heard there was another water main break in th

mel, lots of problems out there.big ones this morning. >> reporter: that's right, yeah, this is just the latest in more than 140 water main breaks that d.c. water has had since december 1st, the majority of them coming they said just in the last week or so. and this is going to continue to happen as we have these unprecedented cold temperatures here. now, the big problem here, of course, is the icing as all the -- the hill. it really just started to freeze in place and you can see just the shine all the way across this well traveled intersection here. this is 34th street. a lot of people also know it at the far end as reno and then you're looking up porter street here where that water main break began and actively right now d.c. water crews are digging into the middle of the street there to try to repair that water main as quickly as possible. we can only assume that there will be areas in here that are impacted by the water restrictions. also wanted to show you wssc, they're also dealing with an unprecedented number

how is the ride so far, mel. >> well, so far the ride from d.c. off route 7 good most of the roads main roads have just been wet when you get off to the side roads you start to see a sheen of ice and people have to take it very, very carefully. sidewalks as well. these are also covered. the reason we head out here we're on the way to restin i checked the department of transportation web site to see where some of the problem spots are. it appeared there's some places in restin where there's it moderate cover ramming because of the temperatures are well below freezing and that is why they're having a little but more of a challenge out that way. so, if you look at the driving shot here you see an amount of fog in front us as well. and those are some of the challenges you end up with as you are drive around the area this morning. it seems like the extra sdlai is probably going to be a good idea for those fairfax county also in montgomery country as well as one of the areas where we see issues too. let me take you to information that we risk even from

mel. >> reporter: good morning, guys. yeah, you can see the ice all over the intersection here, left over from the water that was flowing downhill from the water main break up the street there on porter between 34th and 35th. i can tell you that looks like those repair crews are making some decent progress. they already pulled out a broken section of main. now, sounds like they're working on trying to get a new section put back in. so, that is the good news here especially when they can get these repairs done so quickly. they usually try to prioritize them based on impact to the neighborhood and traffic surrounding areas so this one definitely a priority. it probably happened a little before 3 o'clock this morning. still a little bit of a mess though on the streets here. the after effects of that. we have seen some d.c. water trucks coming through here with some -- some salt and deicer trying to get some of this cleared up. this is just one of many, many problems that d.c. water and wssc have had but you're looking at vid
