melanie alnwick live at the scene in many suitlandnow with the latest.. >> reporter: good morning, guys. just want to kind of give you a lay of the land here. we're here on suitland road near the suitland federal center. there's a pawnshop here and a dry cleaner over there where you see the neon lights and right in that alley that's we'll take you to some of the videotape now. it was a very large scene and police say when they got the call, it was initially for a they got here, they found that it, indeed, was a double homicide. one man was dead in the alley, another ran into the popeye's for assistance. there they also called for help as well. apparently two prince george's county police officers responded to the scene and applied what they call trauma kits. that victim who was inside the popeye's rushed to the hospital but didn't survive. people gathered at the scene as word of the shooting circulated trying to find out who was killed. now, police have not yet released the names of the two investigators still [inaudible] assistance from the public askin

fox5's melanie alnwick live on the scene in fort washington with more. good morning, mel. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. pretty unusual that we're middle of route 210 at this hour normally it would be a very busy commuter route into the city. but now you can see this double fatal collision that happened here around 2:30 this morning. now, what we're told from prince george's county police is that this was a head-on collision. what they tone know at this point -- these cars are in the southbound lanes. what they tone know at this point is whether one vehicle -- they don't know at this point whether one vehicle crossed over the median or whether somebody got onto this southbound lane in the wrong direction. but both drivers were deceased here on the scene. one of the vehicles, a charger, actually caught on fire right after the impact and what you're seeing left of the vehicles here right now is -- they also had to cut the vehicles up in order to be able to get those victims out. of course, they're not going for quite some time until they can get in

melanie alnwick begins our team coverage this morning.el. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys and a quick update that we got from emergency services and also the medical director. the number one concern that they have as we get into the day is the fact that the power is going to be out here for quite some time, extensive damage as we've been saying. there's a shelter-in-place. they don't want anyone to go out unless they have to because they're asking everyone -- they want to keep the roads safe for the first responders. they want to get them in and they're trying to do a grid search at this point but without power they have a number of elderly residents here. if it gets hotter today, they will not have air conditioning. also, many of them have well water and those well pumps do not work either without power. so, they are opening shelters. there was one opened at the high school -- at kent island high school but they did change the location of that. we're going to get that new location for you in just a minute but at the middle school, a

melanie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys.george's county police still have not updated anily information this morning. we are closing in on 12 hours after this scene. it first was put out as a homicide and then after prince george's county police got here, they updated it to say it was, indeed, a double homicide. it started in the alley there in between the pawnshop and the dry cleaner where you see the back of that black van. we'll take you to the video now. a very large scene silver hill road in suitland. we're just across from the census bureau and just up the street from the suitland metro station. police say two men were shot in this shopping center area. one was found dead in the alley but as you mentioned, the other victim ran into the popeye's restaurant, it was filled with customers and employees at the time, ran into that restaurant for help. that is when pg police also came to the scene, to that scene as well. we're told that two prince george's county police officers who were nearby responded and applied what they

our melanie alnwick live on the scene this morning with the latest. hey, mel. >> reporter: hey, good morning. prince george's county police say this now makes 10 homicides in the last eight days. this one started in the alley here between the pawnshop and when you video [inaudible] suitland road air off. people really upset, trying to figure out if anyone they knew here was on the scene. one person was found dead on the scene and the other ran to a nearby popeye's for help. two prince george's county officers apparently were close to the >> double-check and make sure. it's a wait and see basically 'cause that's a all you can do. >> so, police have not yet publically identified the victims in this case. they also say that they're not clear yet on whether the victims shot each whether there is some other suspect out there that they are looking for. they are asking for help from the public. there is a reward offered for information in this case that leads to an arrest. that you can reach through crime [inaudible] he was arrested a short time later. >>> t

melanie? >> reporter: this was a more than 14-hour standoff that involved no use of force by san francisco police. we did hear what may have sounded like a flash bang at one point. this all got started last night after officers received a call for shots fired at about 11:45 p.m. a male suspect who shot an elderly female. sources tell abc 7 news that was his mother. she later died at the hospital. the suspect would not come out of the home for more than 14 hours. we saw here hostage negotiators, a s.w.a.t. team and other specialized units. people that live in the area of 15th and castro were told to shelter in place. there was also an evacuation center set up at mckinley elementary school at 14th and castro. around 2:00 today, the suspect surrendered. that suspect surrendered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. he was taken to san francisco general hospital for treatment. san francisco police say there was no use of force by sfpd. >> this clearly is the direction of the department

melanie woodrow is live in lafayette with the latest. melanie? >> reporter: larry, one of the biggest concerns out here this afternoon is that this building is not structurally sound. you can see that's one of the reasons that they have put up this fence around the building. you can see a couple of people there taking a look. the good news is nobody was in the building late last night when the fire happened. nobody was injured. and today we've seen quite a few people stopping by to look. from drone view 7 you can see the devastation. this lafayette building that was home to a restaurant, other businesses and the chamber of commerce is now a shell of what it once was. >> it's real sad to see. >> vivian andrews is a therapist who rented space here. >> actually imagined climbing down that redwood tree. how would i have gotten out of there? >> reporter: luckily no one was inside the building when it caught fire, though bright red flames and smoke threatened residents who lived in apartments next door. >> i saw nothing but flames through my window. >>
