melanie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys.george's county police still have not updated anily information this morning. we are closing in on 12 hours after this scene. it first was put out as a homicide and then after prince george's county police got here, they updated it to say it was, indeed, a double homicide. it started in the alley there in between the pawnshop and the dry cleaner where you see the back of that black van. we'll take you to the video now. a very large scene silver hill road in suitland. we're just across from the census bureau and just up the street from the suitland metro station. police say two men were shot in this shopping center area. one was found dead in the alley but as you mentioned, the other victim ran into the popeye's restaurant, it was filled with customers and employees at the time, ran into that restaurant for help. that is when pg police also came to the scene, to that scene as well. we're told that two prince george's county police officers who were nearby responded and applied what they

melanie? >> reporter: this was a more than 14-hour standoff that involved no use of force by san francisco police. we did hear what may have sounded like a flash bang at one point. this all got started last night after officers received a call for shots fired at about 11:45 p.m. a male suspect who shot an elderly female. sources tell abc 7 news that was his mother. she later died at the hospital. the suspect would not come out of the home for more than 14 hours. we saw here hostage negotiators, a s.w.a.t. team and other specialized units. people that live in the area of 15th and castro were told to shelter in place. there was also an evacuation center set up at mckinley elementary school at 14th and castro. around 2:00 today, the suspect surrendered. that suspect surrendered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. he was taken to san francisco general hospital for treatment. san francisco police say there was no use of force by sfpd. >> this clearly is the direction of the department

melanie woodrow is live in lafayette with the latest. melanie? >> reporter: larry, one of the biggest concerns out here this afternoon is that this building is not structurally sound. you can see that's one of the reasons that they have put up this fence around the building. you can see a couple of people there taking a look. the good news is nobody was in the building late last night when the fire happened. nobody was injured. and today we've seen quite a few people stopping by to look. from drone view 7 you can see the devastation. this lafayette building that was home to a restaurant, other businesses and the chamber of commerce is now a shell of what it once was. >> it's real sad to see. >> vivian andrews is a therapist who rented space here. >> actually imagined climbing down that redwood tree. how would i have gotten out of there? >> reporter: luckily no one was inside the building when it caught fire, though bright red flames and smoke threatened residents who lived in apartments next door. >> i saw nothing but flames through my window. >>
