fox 5's melanie alnwick has the roundup. >> reporter: whether it comes to the sequester, $85 billion in budget cut, members of congress agreed on one point night. think that sequestration is a bad idea all around. >> we've got to avoid it, we've got stop. >> i think all of us understand if it goes forward in less than three weeks it is going to have a dramatic negative impact. >> reporter: the cuts threaten more than 207,000 jobs in virginia. house majority leader eric cantor isn't hopeful that an alternative will materialize. he puts the solution in president obama's court. >> the president, he is the one who pro'sed the sequester in the first place. i'm questioning where this thing is going because he has not moved in any serious way but we remain anxiously waiting for him to come to the table to work with us. >> reporter: democrats think some of that $85 billion should come from higher taxes. >> if you have spending cuts, education of our children, other investments like the national institutes of health where you are hindering growth, you are not going to reduce the deficit. so w

melanie alnwick is live on capitol hill with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. yes, later today, president obama will be meeting with some key republicans on capitol hill. now, this meeting is supposed to be about immigration reform but there is perhaps maybe a small opening for some conversation about the coming cuts. even so, the white house is definitely escalating its campaign warning of dire consequencess for the sequester isn't stopped. among the first impact to be felt, a reduction in benefits for the long-term unemployed, about $30 a week and furlough notices for federal employees though the cuts to the work hours wouldn't begin until april. there is no real indication of serious negotiations between the two sides. $le 5 billion in budget cuts this fiscal year republicans pointed out is less than 3% of the federal budget but because entitlement protections are included, deeper spending cuts are there. republicans say it could all be averted if the president would just decide how to apply the cuts which were voted in by both parties differently. >> compro

fox 5's melanie alnwick is on the scene on leslie avenue in glenarden.s out but the investigation obviously will continue. >> reporter: that's right, sarah. yes, the fire -- they are no longer fighting an active fire but if you look closely, every once in a while, you can still see some heat or steam escaping from the roof of this one-story house here on leslie avenue. every single window in the front of this house is burned or blown out. it looks like the fire got pretty hot and intense before firefighters arrived. we do know that they got call around 4:02 that. was the official mark of the call coming in when they came and responded to this fire. fully engulfed. the fire chief telling me that, when firefighters first arrived, their number one priority is to go in and get people out. at some point, they have to stop trying to fight the fire in order to rescue the victims. that is why the fire can get a little hotter and out of control than it might normally be. neighbors tell me there are four little girls in this family all under the age of 12. all the

melanie alnwick is live outside suitland high school with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. yes, prince george's county police have not given out a lot of information in this case but we do know that they have enough information that, in a press release, they are calling this a murder and a homicide investigation. as you can imagine, family members of the teen are distraught. it was a door to door canvass for information in hillcrest heights, detectives looks for any snippet of information that could help them piece together what happened on 28th avenue around 4:30 monday. a 15-year-old male, a freshman at suitland high school, found in the road with what police say was trauma to the upper body. he was pronounced dead at the upper hospital. the teen's aunt fears her nephew may have been targeted on the way to the bus stop. she says he was carrying a brand-new pair of shoes. >> his girlfriend some shoes. >> that he had purchased for her? >> what we heard, he was running. i don't know whether they was trying to rob him or what. but he only had one pair of tennis shoes. it was

melanie alnwick is live on capitol hill with the details. >> reporter: good morning, tony. president obama has not put out a specific proposal yet and one might assume he's going to discuss options when he meets with democrats in annapolis today. even so, the president is urging law makers to come up with some sort of alternative measures to keep those automatic spending cuts from taking affect. otherwise some across the board budget cuts will shrink spending by 7.9%. domestic by 5.3%. and medicare will take a 2% reduction. for our region tied into the federal government that could hurt. a study by george mason estimated 448,000 jobs in dc, maryland and virginia could be affected by those budget cuts and jobs at risk in many other sectors as businesses hold back spending on nonessentials while they worry what's going to happen. the automatic cuts are unpopular with both parties but isn't a lot of agreement to achieve $1.2 billion of deficit reduction over ten years. >> i believe they should at least pass a smaller package of spending cuts and tax reforms that would delay th

melanie alnwick is live on the scene with the latest on this story. >> reporter: good morning. yes, again, prince george's county police still being very closed with the information that they have here. not giving us anything more officially than this is a shooting death investigation. we do know it happened somewhere around 1:00 in the morning. you can see that the street is still blocked off here. we are standing here on the opposite side looking down 36th avenue. the house is all the way down the street and then up to where you -- up the hill where you can see the other lights. we are hearing that there maybe at least one victim being possibly two victims here. may have been a fire involved in this as well. s are university of maryland alerts reporting that suspects with an s, so more than one, seen in a tan honda odyssey. but again, prince george's county police are not really giving us a whole lot more information than that to go on right now. we do want to be clear that this is in the city of college park and even though we are hearing that this is off campus, it doesn't

melanie alnwick has the details. >> good morning.sparked a lot of controversy and a lot of complaint from drivers especially people would thought that they were following a law making a legal right turn on red only to find out later that they got a ticket in the mail, a $57 ticket from the city of rockville for what rockville deemed would be a violation. so here is how it works. in 2002, the city of rockville began its red light program and citing as averaged about 8500 a year up until they made this change. now, the citations have more than doubled. it is all because the city of rockville changed the camera vendors and the cameras and they also changed what rockville considers to be a red light violation. the new cameras were installed last summer. they became operational in august. now, the cameras will flash for a driver just crosses that white stop line, not just in they blow through the red light. the cameras also videotaped drivers making right turns on red which is legal. but they will get a tick fete they don't come to a comp

melanie alnwick has more. >> reporter: a very sad update that we got just a few minutes ago from prince george's county police. it appears that all three of the young men involved in this shooting, murder-suicide incident were university of maryland students. we are told that the shooter for some reason had gone to the basement of the home here on 36th avenue and had set some kind of a small fire. the two roommates upstairs then went down stairs into the basement to see what was going on. they managed to get the shoot are upstairs. they went outside of the home. at that point, police say the shooter began firing. he killed one of his roommates, shot the other in the arm and the leg as he tried to run away. the shooter then went to the back of the home and shot himself and took his own life. police again say that they are interviewing witnesses. they are canvassing the neighborhood. they have not given us any information at this point in term of the ages of these three men. they did i say they were all roommates. but we don't know whether they are graduate students or undergraduate stude

melanie alnwick has been at the scene all morning long and joins us live with the latest. this is a tragic situation. >> reporter: it is really just heart breaking here, tony. when you get a closer look at the house here now that the sun has come up , you can see how hot and unrelenting this fire was. you can see where the flames were shooting out and literally from the front of the house all the way to the back of the house. every part of that first floor is charred and damage. neighbors are waking up to the sad news. many of the children on this street all play together hchlt and now some of their friends are gone. the fire started while the family slept. rescue crews and emts rushed to save the family in the dark, in the cold and the smoke. a full rescue task force on hand to try to simultaneously treat all of the patients. one of the survivors being carried in a blanket. the call came in around 4:00 a.m. one of the children ran down the street to call for help. a mother and 8 year old child were able to get out of a window. four on family members were not breathing whe

. >> fox 5's melanie alnwick is live along i 270 with the details of a new study. good morning, melanie. >> reporter: good morning, tony. all of this is coming out of the texas a&m transportation institute. they do the report every single year. dc has continued to rank number one. i want to look on the positive side of this. traffic hasn't gotten any worse. and delays for drivers during peak rush hour are better than they were in 2005, 2007, 2006. all the way back to 2002. we are burning less fuel. there are good things in this report but because of the recession, that's why we had a lot of drop off. as the economy recovers, the congestion and all those things are going to come back as well. here are the numbers. 67 hours, more than a week's vacation, that's what dc area drivers lost sitting in traffic. the cost calculated $1,398 per commuter. 4th year in the rho-d c has claimed top congestion. just in front of los angeles, san francisco, new york and boston. all of those a couple hours difference per year. congested 85% of the time. also this year the transportatio

melanie alnwick is live with the latest on this one. melanie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. a heart breaking turn of events here for the family and friends of these three college students here on 36 avenue. at this point we have no idea why one man decided to open fire on his two house mates. but we do know how it all started. this is a picture that prince georges county police tweeted out not too long ago. shows what was a small fire that had been set in the base amount of the home by the shooter shortly before 1:00 in the morning. police say after that fire was set, two of the house mates in this house here at 8706, 36th avenue. and ended out here in the front yard. that's when one pulled out a gun. one of those students was killed here in the front of the house. and you can see over here the neighbor's house, looks like the back of this car was hit with gunfire. the glass is sprayed all over the place. we also saw a bullet hole in one of the windows in this house and possibly another further down the street. we kno

melanie alnwick is live with that story. >> reporter: good morning. certainly caught a lot of drivers off guard. heard a number of complaints from people who have come up to us. what happened is the city changed vendors and also changed the way it's going to enforce red light violations. in 2002, the city of rockville began red light program and since then the citations have averaged 85 or 8600 a year. and all because of this change in the cameras. now the cameras will flash if the driver crosses the white line, not just if they blow through a red light. the cameras video type drivers making right turns on red which is legal but get a ticket if they don't come to a complete stop behind the white line before proceeding with that will right turn. >> when you come down that hill, if you don't come to a complete stop, it gives you a ticket but if you cross the line it still gives you a ticket. >> but the fact is these people are getting tickets for not running the intersections. it's outrageous. it's highway robbery. and we're calling on the mayor and the

melanie alnwick is live. >> reporter: good morning, tony. the superintendent of public school rz is spending today meeting with his school security team and there is now a county wide task force that is trying to deal with the issue of violence and these teenagers in the community now that it's taken the lives of six students. the community is reeling. it was about 5:30 tuesday when prince georges county police went to investigate another shooting. this time on the 3700 block of donell drive in forestville. two young men both 18 years old shot in a parking lot. one in grave condition. the other pronounced dead at the hospital was in 29th grade. that is the same as charles walker. the suitland high school freshman shot and killed at 4:20 monday on 28th avenue in hill crest heights. police did say they believe robbery was the motive in that case. was carrying a pair of boots. community leaders are working to combat a culture of violence. >> sad. sad atmosphere. people was crying. nobody was going to class. administrators everywhere. real crazy

melanie alnwick is live with the latest. >> good morning. chris kyle earned a reputation as the military's most lethal sniper. two silver stars and five bronze stars with valor. he died doing what he loved. stunned the military community. his autobiography detailed 150 plus kills from 1999 to 2009. the bodies of kyle and his friend were found at a gun range. the accused shooter is believed to be a troubled former soldier kyle was trying to help. 25-year-old eddie ray ralph shot the men in the back around 3:30 in the afternoon fleeing in a pick-up truck. >> well, i don't think anybody knows why. they all went out there together in the same vehicle. it's my understanding the suspect may have been suffering from some type of mental illness from being in the military himself. he was a marine for four years and may have been suffering from some complications from that. i'm not sure. >> chris kyle left the navy in 2009. he dealt with his own post war struggles and established a charity to help other vets. ruth's mother may have been the one to rea

fox5's melanie alnwick is live on capitol hill with the latest.porter: good morning, allison. the white house is hoping to ratchet up pressure a little bit. it's put out a state by state compilation of possible budget cuts. in d.c., maryland and virginia that includes billions in lost pay due to furloughs, families missing out on day care and vaccines and big cuts to environmental efforts as well. congress returns to capitol hill today, looking for ways to rework the automatic spending cuts that will hit every single line item at every federal agency. administration leaders say the spending reductions will furlough hundreds of thousands of government workers and contractors, clog air travel and slash education funding. sunday the secretary of education says schools will have to spend pink slips to 40,000 teachers and 70,000 children could lose access to head start. the transportation secretary vowed that safety will not be compromised. he did say cuts to the faa would be phased in and essential services would be protected. still, both men expresse

melanie alnwick joins us live now. >> reporter: good morning, allison. it does feel like the focus has shifted from stopping the cuts to pinning the blame. 45% of americans surveyed would blame the gop. 32 would blame president obama if no deal is made. $85 billion in budget cuts just this fiscal year alone, it is less than 3% of the budget. but because entitlement budgets are protected, hitting almost everything else. warned of a slow down on global trade. trouble for air travellers. states are preparing for cuts to education, transportation, health services and environmental funds. there are no serious goeshgsz, local congressman say there are conversations happening. >> and their want is to get things done. find common ground and bring people together and get a solution on the table so we can set aside this sequester. >> later today i'm going to go to the house rules committee and for the fourth time ask for an opportunity to have a vote on a very specific proposal i've introduced that would replace the sequester with a mix of cuts as well as revenue

fox 5's melanie alnwick is live along i-207 in rockville, maryland with details of this brand-new study. >> good morning. at this hour of the morning, of course, things moving along pretty well along 270. as we know, with any of the major arteries and the side roads in the area, just one little accident can snarl the entire morning for commuters. it really is becoming a problem and it just -- it is one of those things that isn't getting any better. now, according to the texas transportation institute study, they say that our roads are congested 85% of the time and our rush hour is no longer a rush hour. it goes on for about seven hours every single day that. certainly is very frustrating. here is a look at the other cities that are also in the top five so washington, d.c., number one. losangeles, san francisco, new york and boston. probably no surprise there. these are all repeat cities in their ranks. washington, d.c. has ranked number one in delayed traffic for the fourth year in a row t really hasn't been out of the top five. i went back and looked at the study, since the early 1980s

fox 5's melanie alnwick is live in rockville with more. >> reporter: good morning. is quite a camera controversy going on here in the city of rockville and it is something that happened kind of quietly last year while most of us were engaged in the political campaigns and those sorts of things, the city of rockville made a quiet change to its red light program. it switched vendors and it also changed the way that it will begin endorsing red light running and so, now, instead of just ticketing people who blow through red lights, now, it appears that they are also ticketing people who fail to stop at the white line. i don't know if we have any video. we did see some back earlier of what it looks like where the cars will come up and the camera will flash if they are going at a certain speed. and then, if they stop across the line, then that is when the camera will flash. sometimes they get a ticket. sometimes they don't. they have to go through and look at it and see. but we want to bring in lon anderson with aaa mid-atlantic. you and i briefly discussed this last week

melanie alnwick explains. >> reporter: in rockville, red light cameras flash night and day, but few driverss. instead, aaa mid-atlantic said they're being ticketed for this. stopping across the white line. it's technically a violation of the law, but also a bit tricky. >> this money chase policing for profit. you know, i got your gain for green backs. >> what is different? late last summer, the rockville police department changed the camera vennor and how it enforces -- vender and how it enforces violations. ten clicked 86 citing as. in 2012, cameras racked up almost 18,000 red light citing as, 15,000 of those from five new cameras after august 1st. >> and technically, if you don't come to a full and complete stop, you have, by law, you run the red light. >> reporter: the rockville police department said drivers should only be ticketed if the entire car passes the stop line. the photo enforcement unit reviews each photo and decides whether or not there was a violation. it appears that failing to come to a complete stop before legally turning right on red is what is driving the dramatic spik

melanie alnwick is live in alexandria with the very latest on this story. >>> good morning. homicides in this area are quite rare. the city of alexandria, so the news that there may be a suspicious death here possibly a homicide investigation is certainly unsettling to neighbors. you can see the house is still blocked off with crime tape right now. there is a police car stationed out front and the investigation into exactly what happened here continues. now, it was shortly before 7:00 last night when an adult resident came home and found the 94-year-old man dead alone in the house. police say he had upper body trauma but they didn't elaborate on exactly what that means. sources tell fox 5 that investigators believe there was a burglary or robbery here and that the person who found the man dead was an adult son or stepson. police don't have any information at this point about a possible suspect. they're still right now calling to a death investigation. we can tell you that the local news site del ray patch is saying that one of men who lives in this house complained to the ci
