melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: well, this couple had been together for a few years. the victim had just begun a new job, just a few moments ago a couple of his co-workers stopped by, and they along with everyone they've talked to today said that they are shocked. there's a coroner seal on the door. burlingame police say saturday night just before 10:00 they received a call for an unresponsive mail. >> it was obvious he had sustained stab wounds. >> reporter: first responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene. smith has been at the jail on homicide charges. smith worked at union bank where co-workers declined to work on camera. the couple was known by employees at sunrise market as well as this independent car dealership. a man who works here said mia and ed were engaged at one point. also, that he just stopped to talk to ed who was with his grandson saturday afternoon. he was shocked to hear police arrested smith. she'll be arraigned tuesday afternoon. in burlingame, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >>> police arrested a man after an early morning shooting at the s

abc 7 news reporter, melanie woodrow. >> reporter: the man charged with kate steinle's murder has said he found a gun wrapped in the t-shirt under a bench at pier 14. a bullet he fired ricochetted off the pavement and hit steinle. they stole it from federal agent's vehicle while he was off duty. it's unclear how it got to pier 14. they want to ask him about the gun when the murder trial begins but say the blm is telling them the federal agent is not subject to a state federal court subpoena. >> on behalf of the blm, which i have to ask you do taxpayers want a federal agency to be working to try to stop us from calling a witness who are not providing us with information? >> he knows about the information of the weapon being stored. >> reporter: in a letter the u.s. department of the interior outlined its regulations relating to subpoenas. the blm is a bureau of that department. >> there is a process whereby we ask permission to call him as a witness and the agency would decide whether or not they want to abide by it. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the district attorney's office did not

melanie woodrow is live at sfpd headquarters with details on how this ordeal for the baby's parents ended with relief. melanie? >> reporter: absolutely. san francisco police say this was a citywide joint effort to catch this suspect, and her choice of getaway transportation may have helped quite a bit. within 30 minutes of getting a call for the kidnapping of this baby girl, police were patting down and cuffing a 36-year-old suspect. >> everybody got involved. this was a big deal. >> reporter: just before 9:00 a.m. on sherman street, police say a 6-month-old was inside this vehicle while her father prepared a bottle for her a short distance away. that es when police say this woman snatched the baby and boarded a muni bus. >> i think she saw an opportunity and she took the baby. >> reporter: police alerted sfmta. >> our operators are trained to respond to emergency situations like these, and these operators did just that. >> reporter: but when the first bus stopped, the woman got off and boarded another. >> this is a very rare situation. >> reporter: the second bus driver then also stopped

abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow has our story from novato. >> reporter: just before 6:00 p.m.iday, the alarm system at a north marin water district tank did exactly what it was designed to do. >> we immediately went up to the tank and noticed that somebody had cut through the chain-link fence, cut into -- cut the lock that gains access to the stairs, and then also cut another lock on top of the tank that's the access hatch. >> reporter: general manager drew mcintyre says the tank, which services 1,000 customers, was immediately taken offline. a backup tank is providing water to customers. from droneview 7, you can see there are two tanks near wild horse valley drive. mcintyre says he is not releasing the exact one that was broken into, to prevent copycat criminals. water tests didn't turn up any contaminants, but mcintyre says it's impossible to test for everything. >> our number one priority is to protect our customers' drinking water supply. so we made the decision then to go ahead and start draining the tank. >> who would want to contaminate water especially since we just g

we'll begin our team heat with melanie woodrow who's at walnut creek. are you hot out there? >> reporter: i am. probably feels good in the air conditioned studio. in walnut creek it's the best of the both worlds. you can be outside, get a little sun. if you get too hot, you can dip into any air conditioned stores around here. just how hot is it? take a look. we have a shot of the infamous temperature sign in walnut creek. about an hour ago, you can see it was 102 degrees. that was probably about 5:00. a little after 5:00 in the evening. still over 100 degrees. we've seen a number of people out here in downtown walnut creek. of course, lots of them hanging onto ice cold drinks, ice cream, whatever they can do to keep cool. really a lot of people are outside. a lot of them telling me they are used to this. these are temperatures they're accustomed to on a warm weekend here in the east bay. we talked to some people to see just how they were doing on this hot sunday afternoon. >> so, i was not staying cool. i was just burning up in the sun. >> just walking around, going into toy

here's melanie woodrow. >> officials are calling it a deadly case of human smuggling. at least 39 people inside a big rig truck parked in this texas walmart parking lot. nine men died. >> the air conditioning was not working. so everyone was removed. >> 30 people are being treated at area hospitals. at least two of the victims are under 18 years old. >> we triaged each one of these people. it was a mass casualty situation for us. we treated it like you would do an airline crash or any major incident. we utilized helicopters to fly patients out, at least seven area hospitals. >> authorities found one person in a wooded area new the wal mart. it's believed many other people escaped before authorities arrived. it wasn't until someone inside the trailer asked an employee for water that the employee called police. the u.s. attorney's office in the western district of texas say investigators have identified the driver as 60-year-olds james matthew bradley jr. of clearwater, florida. bradley, who is in custody, and anyone else found to be involved, is expected to face state a
