san jose state political science professor doctor melinda jackson isn't surprised by lofgren's letter. can he survive the weekend? well, you're asking me to make a prediction, which is always risky in politics. my judgment, as a political scientist, it seems like the writing is on the wall, but the president appears to be standing his ground. in a memo obtained by nbc news, the campaign's battleground states director says that the president is, quote, in it to win it. and not all democrats are walking away from the party's leader. senator alex padilla has remained a very active supporter of the biden-harris ticket. and this is what governor gavin newsom told cbs news when asked about reports that he was being asked to step into the race. delete, delete, delete, delete. thank you. delete, and rinse, repeat, i'm all in no daylight. you never even engage in it privately. no i don't. absolutely not. a party divided as the clock ticks toward november fifth, when voters will make the final decision. damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. joining us now for more insight is our political analyst

represents parts of the silicon valley and east bay and political analyst and professor of politics, melinda jackson from san jose state. nice to have both of you back on this program. congressman, i know it's a little after 10:00 in washington, d.c. appreciate you staying up late for us. and we'll start with you, congressman, you are well connected. what happened behind the scenes over the weekend? what finally caused president biden to pull out of this race? i think he looked at the numbers and the data and he said that, kamala harris would have the best shot of defeating donald trump. and he's a patriot. i think he had a clear path to reelection as well. and i supported him until the very last moment. but now that he stepped aside, we've seen this surge of enthusiasm for vice president harris. and it's all over the country with african american women, with young voters, with, grassroots activists. and so i think it's a jolt of energy for our ticket. professor jackson, let's get you in here where you are seeing this huge surge of enthusiasm for the dams. can they keep this up? and how important is

today, on our midday live show, i spoke with san jose state political science professor, doctor melinda jackson about vance as the vp pick. >> it definitely shows us that trump is doubling down on his message. he didn't pick a vice president running mate who is different from him. he picked someone who's very similar. younger, has a different background, right? comes out of the rust belt region. so those things may help, but really the issue positions and the message and the tone, the demeanor is, is all trump. so vance may, present an example of a convert, right? someone who was initially skeptical and critical of trump, but who has come around and is now you know, a devoted supporter. and he he does definitely. he will play the attack dog role. he will be out there, you know, amplifying the maga message. and it seems like those are the voters that they're really going after is trying to identify more voters who resonate with that message, who, you know, perhaps have not voted before or infrequently. and to get them energized enough to turn out in november. >> live coverage of the republican n

san jose state political science professor doctor melinda jackson says harris will need to focus on swaying undecided voters. a lot of those younger voters who might be more inclined to vote democratic but really were turned off by joe biden. they're going to be taking another look. harris is already seeing a bump in financial support nationwide in the first five hours since she announced her candidacy. i believe she's raised something like 27, $28 million. vice president harris has already mounted her own white house bid under what used to be the biden-harris campaign, and will likely have access to the more than $90 million the president still has left in his campaign account. but no matter how each campaign moves forward, both sides agree. president biden dropping out of the race is a game changer. it's a whole new race. south carolina republican representative nancy mace says she plans to file paperwork tomorrow to have vice president harris invoke the 25th amendment, and assume the duties of acting president, saying if joe biden does not have the cognitive ability to seek reelection, h

we spoke with san jose state political science professor melinda jackson. certainly people who who may be undecided might become more sympathetic to trump as a result of this, i think we also need to see how trump himself responds. we're seeing bipartisan messages coming out with everyone condemning the political violence, and, you know, that is absolutely the appropriate response. particularly in the immediate hours following an attack like this. but as we know, donald trump is a defiant candidate. he has, used some, some violent rhetoric in the past that seems to be supporting or encouraging violence. and so, i think if he responds to this attack with, you know, kind of vengeance and more violent rhetoric that could also, turn off some voters who are yet undecided, coming up in about 30 minutes from now, nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston will join us live to talk more about how this assassination attempt changes the next, next few months. heading into the november election at 710 on your sunday morning. we have much more ahead on today in the b

joining us now is melinda jackson, political analyst and professor of politics at san jose state.anks so much for joining us. as we just saw last night, zoom call raised millions of dollars for the harris campaign. what do grassroots efforts like that one mean for her campaign and its effect on the democratic party? yes well, it's really demonstrating just the outpouring of support and enthusiasm on the democratic side. it has completely changed the tenor of this campaign. democrats were feeling discouraged, not very excited about, you know, biden's candidacy. this is just, you know, coming out of the woodwork. people are excited. they want to donate money. they want to volunteer. they want to be a part of this movement. and that kind of grassroots enthusiasm does make a difference. it drives turnout. when people are enthusiastic and excited, they are much more likely to actually turn up at the polls to talk to their friends to, you know, go out and knock on doors, share memes, all of that. so i think what we're seeing now really demonstrates, kamala harris's strength and support

for more insight now, let's turn things over to melinda jackson, who is a political science professort san jose state. melinda, thank you so much for joining us. >> good morning. >> so, melinda, what does jd vance really bring to the trump campaign here? >> yeah, i think vance is a smart choice for trump in that he's he's very similar on the issues. now why is that a smart thing? often, you know, a president will choose a running mate who brings something different. in this case, i think trump picked, you know, his favorite really. i mean, i think he he probably sees something of himself in, in vance, you know, a younger version of himself, vance has been extremely loyal, to trump after, you know, being a critic early on, so, you know, he, he, he also, you know, comes from a working class background, in ohio, trump is targeting those rust belt states, ohio, pennsylvania, michigan. so, you know, he brings some diversity in that sense. but in another sense, he kind of doubles down on the maga message. and i think that reflects the fact that trump is feeling pretty confident at this poin
