joying me now is melissa harris-perry, and jonathan capehart. thanks to you both for joining me tonight. jonathan, this is big news, what's your reaction to this? >> it's not just big, it's historic news. at 3:00 this afternoon, the president of the united states for the first time expressed support for same sex marriage. a law from congress would have to hit the president's desk and he would have to sign it. there is one from senator diane feinstein. another way it could be overturned is by a court challenge and there are a number of cases coming up through the supreme court. the fact that the president came in and out in favor of equality today is historic news and it was the right thing to do. >> i agree with you, and i think that it clearly was the right thing to do, but melissa, aside from the law, this is a real victory for civil rights and civil liberties even beyond just those in the gay and lesbian community. wouldn't you agree with that? >> absolutely. i know a lot of people will look at the politics around this and trace it back to vi

want to bring in now melissa harris perry, the host of "the melissa harris perry show" right here onng rogue. when we look at the democrats at there and we talk about the cory bookers, ed rendell, why have they gone off script? they've been cast in certain roles. why are they finding themselves off message so frequently? >> i think in this case, it's a very specific case of the relationship of these individuals to private equity, big money and maybe potentially even to bain. i think part of what's interesting here is seeing how much sort of the democratic party has done two things, one, democrats like republicans are as beholden to big money interest for their personal reelection and sort of personal income interest as both harold ford and cory booker and ed rendell all are, so in this case, it was actually their political interests against their financial interests. but the other thing is, remember, the moderate wing, the dlc aspect of the party really emerges quite powerful in the 1990s. looks like there's going to be a bit of a battle here about what the party's message is going t

melissa lee and bob pisani are standing by for us. melissa, to you first of all. you were there down at the nasdaq. you like all of us i'm sure gazing at the board waiting for the first trade to come in. waiting, waiting. never came in. how badly does this reflect on the nasdaq? >> down by more than 3% and certainly we saw the turnaround in the stock as news of these delays started to leak out. this is what happened, nasdaq on a conference call said 11:05 is when trading was going to begin. it was delayed because of communication problems and tremendous order flow. finally it opened about 11:30. to give you an idea of the flow we saw in the first 30 seconds of trading, 82 million shares of facebook did start. and then there are other separate issues that we're still dealing with right now. we are getting indications from a lot of institutions on the street that they have placed orders on the open facebook shares and as of right now, bob, i know you spoke to this as well, they are still not confirmed. they don't know if their orders have actually been filled at thi
