back with me now, melissa harris perry and e.j.dion. anks for coming on the show. >> good to be with you. >> absolutely. >> melissa, let me go back to you. how scared should wall street be? >> well, what i love is it was just sort of a clinic in the so cattic method. all she did was ask a question. so senator warren just asked the same question over and over again. tell me about when you took wall street banks to trial. and by asking that question, she, of course, reveals the answer itself which is they don't take them to trial. they aren't held acountable. and then that lovely code at the end, that ordinary people are. the point here is the juxtaposition of fairness and what counts as fair and who gets made an example of in this country and who doesn't. so i think they ought to be quite nervous. as soon as questions like that are posed, then the american people do begin to ask for exactly the accountability that these wall street banks have not to, in fact, have. >>. e.j., she didn't hold back. what does that tell us about the future? w

joining me now is melissa harris perry and dana millbank. republicans say this consumer bureau could hurt wall street. but, today, the dow closed over 14,000 for the first time in six years. so what's this really all about? >> well, look, this is the mind trick. this is the game of redirection that the republicans have been playing really for the first four years of president obama's first term and they're continuing to play it. and it is this. the thing that caused the economic crash in 2008, the home values, the evaporation of wealth, the loss of jobs were the decisions made by those one percenters on wall street. and what happened is they redirected, they changed the conversation so that suddenly we'd be worried about the deficit instead of worried about wall street. this consumer financial bureau, the protection bureau, set up under elizabeth warpen, this focus on regulating banks the reality that we had been raided by wall street, that all of that got turned around so that instead, it somehow became a govpt deficit problem when it was n

i'm melissa harris-perry. this week, the news out of the midwest was that of a city in crisis. detroit, michigan, once the nation's richest city per capita, once the nation's fifth largest city, once a symbol of u.s. innovation, industry and success, is in such dire straits that the city is in need of an intervention. on tuesday afternoon, a panel of state-appointed experts released their findings that the city of detroit faces quote, a financial emergency, one which they say the city is not equipped to address. as a result, detroit may soon become the largest american municipality in history to file for bankruptcy. the decision may be left to just one person. if michigan governor rick snider decides to act on the panel's report and appoint an emergency financial manager, a decision expected to be made in the coming week. key findings of the six-person panel include that the detroit police department has more than 2,000 employees but no accurate information on how they are deployed. that the city's long-term l

i'm melissa harris-perry. or vawa sounds like the easiest thing to support. a no brainer. it shouldn't require much thought to support legislation that aims to stop violence against women. before the senate passes it and sends it to the house, it's worth taking a look at why it's taken this long to get to this point. it's been enacted since 1994. among other things vawa strengthened federal penalties for repeat sex offenders used federal funds to better handle crimes, provide grants to domestic violence survivors to get protection orders and leave a situation where they felt trapped by financial depend dance. the grand programs could no longer discriminate against lbgq citizens. they would receive enhanced protections. it's obvious that some republicans still have a problem with the bill. still. these eight republican senators, all men, last week voted against the violence against women act, even coming up for a vote. i guess we can count on what they are going to do tomorrow. what about house majority leader
