joining me now is melissa harris-perry, host of msnbc's "melissa harris-perry." morning, so take off your host hat and put on your professorial hat. >> so this is a hugely important point about president obama. i want to walk us through it quickly. we have been talking so much today about chief justice roberts and the supreme court. but my colleague gerald rosenburg a law professor from the university of chicago has written that the supreme court is a hollow hope. a lot of sometimes when we look at the civil rights movement, we think of the supreme court as so critically important to the motion of the civil rights movement, but it's always just reactive. the court can't make policy. the court can't set us on a new track. it can only react. and so as important as the court's decision was today, what we have to remember is that this court would have never had an opportunity to make aç decisio like this had it not been for president obama and quite honestly for speaker nancy pelosi. here's what they did. not with the masses kind of majorities that fdr had when he p

let's turn to msnbc's melissa harris-perry and mark halpern, senior political analyst for "time" magazine and msnbc. melissa, let's start with you. by most accounts, last week was not a good one for the president. one of the reasons, the recall election in wisconsin going to the gop incumbent. although a lot of those people who voted for the gop incumbent are also obama supporters. then the romney camp out earns the obama camp by $15 million last month. how significant are those two events? >> i think the wisconsin event is much less significant for the president than it is for the issue of organized labor, than it is for wisconsinites. the president made a calculated decision not to jump into that race. he made a decision not to ever appear on behalf of tom barrett. he did not send dnc resources there. and when you look at sort of the language of wisconsin voters, their decision to return their incumbent -- rather to not recall scott walker, does seem to be as much a set of issues around local politics rather than a referendum on the president. obviously, the big question for him was thi

. >> joining me now is jared bernstein and melissa harris-perry. thank you both for being here tonight. melissa, what did this speech mean for the president's campaign moving forward? >> well, he went to the number one issue that is going to define the campaign. he defined his position there. it was really what i think the president needed to do more than any other thing. not to play defense on this issue of the economy and sort of where our economic indicators are right now. he's been in a bit of a defensive position since the so-called gaffe about the private business. but we came out and in a clear way said there are two visions. here's mine. if you like that road, travel down it. we know where that road ends. it happened in 2008 with the crash of the economy. or we can move down this road which is a vision of collective efforts working together through government. but government isn't some other thing. government is all of us. we are the government. we are the people. >> and jared, he also kind of hit on the fact that, you know, they keep saying

melissa harris-perry interviewed nancy pelosi and she explained her personal connection to those whoa grandmother and also a senior citizen. so in every category of life there are personal stories as to why patient protections that are in this bill make a difference in the lives of those families. >> msnbc host melissa harris-perry joins us right now. melissa, thanks for staying with us. >> of course. >> 6-3, did she expect roberts to go the way she did? >> i think she would have expected roberts to go there with kennedy so that -- i mean, i think the sense was that roberts wants to preserve the sense that this court is not a partisan court, that this court is actually making decisions based on the law, based on what has already stood. as she said in her interview with me, they thought about a supreme court challenge before they actually drafted this. they understood there was a taxing power and maybe even a commerce clause power. i don't think she expected him to be a 5-4 decision maker. >> when we look at the conversation that you had with her, was there a sense of vindication? you
