[ clock ticking ] do you hear that?icking. it's kind of like a dog whistle, so if you're like most people, you've probably never noticed it. because it's also the sound of obsession. and to hear it, you have to be on a one-track mind with our congress, to which a ticking time bomb is the accompaniment to our national debt, ticking away like so many seconds and minutes on a clock. only the big explosion that we're all supposed to be bracing for is turning out to be less of a kapow and more of a kapoof. as it turns out, instead of going deeper into debt during the second fiscal quarter of this year, they were able to make a dent in the national debt for the first time since president obama took office. that's $35 billion ticks off the clock, in the opposite direction, paying down the national debt. and then there's the object of washington's other obsession. the reason we all need to borrow all that money, to reduce our national deficit. yep, no big bang there either, because the congressional budget office, cbo, recrunch
