i'm dorian warren in for melissa harris-perry.made history when this happened. before a packed house, the seattle city council voted unanimously 9-0 to raise the municipal minimum wage to $15 an hour, making it the highest in the nation. but why did seattle feel the need to raise its local minimum wage and not rely on the federal government? especially when it's something president obama has talked about a lot in the past few months. and i mean a lot. >> in the coming weeks, i will issue an executive order requiring federal contractors to pay their federally funded employees a fair wage of at least $10.10 an hour because if you cook our troops meals or wash their dishes, you should not have to live in poverty. so ask your senator, ask your representative in the house, do you support raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour? if they say yes, tell them good job. it's a very simple issue. either you're in favor of raising wages for hard-working americans or you're not. >> it seems the president's words have fallen on the de

i'm melissa harris-perry. this time it was seattle. on thursday afternoon a 26-year-old gunman went on a shooting rampage at seattle pacific university. the shooting comes on the heals of al violent rampage in california on sunday that left seven dead, including the 22-year-old shooter and another 13 wounded. in the middle of all this violence was a gun story of another kind. videos for a group called open guns texas. which is an organize dedicated to the safe and legal carry of firearms openly p in the state of texas. the members of open texas believe so deeply, they decided to show people they meant business, and our friends at mother jones published this video of what happened when they did. >> i'm not going to serve you on this. yeah. have a good day, sir. all right. man, that's the second time in a row. dude! >> that was a sonic restaurant employee saying he wouldn't serve members of open carry texas because they came into the establishment with their assault rifles. sonic joins a growing list of national

i'm melissa harris-perry. this morning we begin with a disturbing story of indefinite detention of the human rights violations it can gender. ft let's begin with a location already synonymous with these issues. guantanamo bay. for the men detained there, the there's special scrutiny because of the alleged involvement with terrorist acts in the united states. the problems of gitmo continue to reflect on us as a nation. democrat senator carl levin of michigan is especially concerned. last week while the house shot down an amendment to close the the detention center, senator levin managed to pass a bill that would create a pass to close guantanamo bay. this bill would allow him to transfer the 150 detainees remaining to the u.s. where they would be kept as prisoners of war and get trials. but only if president obama submits a detailed plan to do so. don't expect anyone closely following the issues of guantanamo bay to feel optimistic. this is only the latest in multiple unsuccessful efforts to close the detention

i'm melissa harris-perry.n-americans were registered to vote and that was no accident. white democrats built an effective machine to keep them away from the polls despite being guaranteed the right to vote in the constitution nearly 100 years to vote. after african-americans had to pass nearly impossible literacy tests. they had to pay annual poll taxes out of reach for many. and the state disenfranchised those convicted of certain crimes, crimes chosen because they were considered to be those most likely to be committed by aft african-americans. civil rights workers had been trying to chip away at this disenfranchisement through the early 1960s. they were led by a civil rights legend. and they met with great resi resistance. activists were murdered for their efforts. but slowly activists were drawing the national spotlight towards mississippi. cue freedom summer. 50 years ago when 1,000 volunteers, many of them white northern college students, converged on mississippi to help black voters overcome those obsta
