msnbc host melissa harris-perry is standing at the historic bridge. t that bridge is quite different than it was 50 years ago. what are you seeing? >> well so many things that i'm seeing here. i mean one is just an enormous outpouring of love. i mean i don't know any other word to use other than love but it is this sense of rootedness and community, this sense of connection to history, and this deep sense of love for this country. and when i say love for the country, i mean the kind of love for the country that the president laid out for us yesterday. in his discussion about the ways in which those people who are true patriots, who truly love their country seek to perfect it. and seeking to perfect your nation always means being willing to engage in social action in political action, to help change it. and you really see that here. >> absolutely. and you see people who have come by the hundreds by the thousands to be part of this. and i can't help but to hear in the background i believe that is reverend al sharpton speaking. >> yes. >> he's at the chap

joining me now from selma, msnbc melissa harris-perry and joy reid and charles ogle tree, a friend ando the president and the first lady. thank you all for joining us today. >> pleasure. >> thank you. >> melissa, what are you expecting to hear from the president? >> again, you know, we don't know precisely what the president will have to say today. i think, joy and i have been talking about what we hope we hear from the president today. we hope we hear a connection back to history. an idea on which the ways his own presidency is a bridge between the moment that selma. when the president was here just after announcing he was going to run for president. when he was still a young senator and presidential hopeful in 2007, he laid out this notion of the joshua generation in which he talked about standing on the shoulders of the moses. congressman john lewis who led the way initially and then suggesting as is the biblical reference that the joshua generation is actually going to move us into that promise land. move us into that next space. of course, we're now six years into an obama adminis

. >> joining me now from selma is msnbc's melissa harris-perry. how did the president's speech compare to previous speeches on race? >> oh there's no question it is among the best speeches of his career and certainly one of the best of his presidency. when i say best what i mean is that it did the work of connecting the political and social world that we're currently existing in to the very poignant moment where he was. so he connected with his crowd. you could hear the passion, the emotion, the roar of the crowd when he would get to certain key places. that is evidence of kind of good speech making. but even more importantly than that, the president did some work i haven't seen him do in a long time, for which was really incredibly important to his initial election, which is to say he placed his own legacy within the context of a broad american history, telling us a story about our founding of us as we the people of us as a people who come from a document that says we have certain inalienable rights. then connecting his own presidency there, sayi

. >> let's bring in right now, jason johnson, professor of political science and melissa harris-perryds no introduction, host of "melissa harris-perry" right here on msnbc. jason, to you first, how surprised are you that so many white citizens of ferguson weren't aware of what's been going on around them? >> i'm not shocked at all. that goes back to my experiences when i was in ferguson. i went to the first baptist church. it was a majority white meeting and most of the residents there were more concerned with how ferguson looked than whether or not there were actually problems on the ground. there were people there who were saying, i only go to the black part of town to buy wings, that's a quote. it doesn't surprise me that people are that oblivious as to what their own police department was doing to their black neighbors. >> melissa, how do you get to solutions when you have some that aren't even acknowledging a problem, whether it's out of ignorance or not being aware? how do you get to a solution? >> part of what i heard was people who had goodwill. this is important as we talk ab

joining us from selma is msnbc's melissa harris-perry and joy reid. lee celebration. although we are here as media particularly marking this 50th anniversary, the people of selma mark this day every single year and they mark it as a jub leeilee. they say the local and federal government failed to protect those folks. and their ultimate victory in the summer when the 1965 voting rights act was passed. but that jubilee, that celebration is also tempered. it's a sober moment both to remember the people who died in the context of the selma campaign, people who were injured in the context of the selma campaign but also the fact that our current voting rights act has been gutted by the supreme court which really pulled out the heart of section 4 formula. so it is both a time -- a spirit of jubilation and of celebration but also of sobering concern. >> absolutely. as we play some video of that day back 50 years ago, joy, i want to ask you, what do you expect to hear from president obama today? >> well betty, president obama obviously is a student of history.

>>> good morning, i'm melissa harris-perry. this was the scene on monday in madison, wisconsin, as hundreds of high school students and university students walked out of their classrooms to occupy the state capitol building to protest the shooting death of 19-year-old tony robinson who was unarmed when he was killed by police. robinson was shot last friday evening by officer matt kenny, who police say was responding to 911 reports of a young man behaving erratically, yelling, jumping in front of cars and assaulting bystanders. it is still unclear exactly what happened when officer kenny encountered robinson in the apartment robinson shared with two friends. but police say kenny was assaulted before he opened fire. police scanner audio indicates officers knew robinson's name and age before arriving to the scene and a dispatcher can be heard reporting no weapons seen. preliminary autopsy released friday listed robinson's cause of death as firearm-related trauma. after being shot in the head torso and upper body. more than 1,000 p
