today we present a roundtable dialogue of melvin laird 1969 to 1973. this volume highlights records from across the national archives, the ford library, one of 13 presidential libraries within the national archive's laird papers on topics including the 1964 republican party platform, the 1964, '68 and '72 presidential campaigns. the vietnam war and a wide range of defense department procurement and planning policies, regional and global. other records consulted include records of the joint chiefs of staff, records of the office of the secretary of defense, as well as many different records series from the richard nixon presidential library and the presidential materials staff. in to 12, we presented a discussion based on the previous volume in the series and pleased to welcome back dr. aaron mann who will moderate today's discussion. it's also a pleasure to welcome our keynote speaker, john warner, former secretary of the navy and senator from virginia. our moderator for today's discussion dr. aaron r. mann is chief historian for the office of the secr

melvin laird was a major fixture in nixon's a firm term. he advised the president elect in 1968 to nominate democratic senator henry jackson to the post. when jackson backed out, nixon turned to laird. laird accepted on condition that nixon let him appoint his own officials. to laird's surprise, nixon agreed. laird exercised this authority throughout his tenure. for his deputy, laird selected david packer without first notifying the president elect. when informed, nixon raised no options, but was somewhat displayed because i had recruited packard for a cabinet level position but was turned down. he wrote lighter in 1972, quote, i struck out. end quote. perhaps no single appointment was important to d.o.d. in this area than that of packard. among other things, he handled acquisition reform and the preparation of defense budget. laird entered office intent upon changing from the conflict. he planned to withdraw forces from vietnam while improving and modernizing south vietnam's a military so it could become capable of continuing the struggle

after his liberation, melvin tried to build a normal life. he didn't speak much about his experience as a p.o.w. he died in 1984 at the age of 65. >> i think as a second generation, i don't feel the hardships, but i do see that it's affected my father. so that is something that i think we are missing. >> his siblings contacted a japanese citizen's group that researchers prisoners of war. karen and william visited central tokyo where their father's plane crashed. >> so this is the area the front of the plane came down. >> that's right. >> okay. >> reporter: the siblings were most affected by their visit to the prison camp where their father was one of about 600 captives. melvin kept a secret journal, and inside he counted the days until the freedom he craved. >> he also was very hungry in the camp, so he would draw pictures of food that he really craved for and he also missed his home. >> reporter: melvin johnson's mission was to target military facilities. the u.s. later changed tactics and started dropping bombs on cities. karen and william

and what does it mean to you, melvin, to see them get that opportunity at their age? >> it was wonderful. i teach at columbia journalism school, and they live about three blocks away, down at the grant houses. and just to be able to find some wonderful talent blocks away from where i teach is just a wonderful thing. and they were able to learn -- we won an honorable mention last year, and i told them, i said, "listen, next year, we're gonna win this thing." and i said, "just visualize being in the white house, and this will happen for you." and so i think, if there's one thing that they take away, it's that they can do anything. they have unlimited potential. you just have to visualize it. >> yeah, and you can make it happen. so, tell us about this digital media program. why did you start this? why was it important to you to bring young people into the field? >> well, sandra, i was walking around in my community in [indistinct] and i noticed that black and latino young people were consuming media -- they were playing video games, they were watching movies, they were l

as nbc news craig melvin reports, a new study puts a spotlight on what is called homework overload. >er: back to school means back to homework. according to a new study, kids are receiving more homework than what education experts recommend. in some cases, much more. >> kindergartners have three times the homework load as they're expected to have. >> first graders have three times the homework load that they're expected to have. and second graders have 2 1/2 times the homework load they're expected to have. all these things are troubling. >> reporter: stephanie donaldson-preston, author of "the learning habit" was a contributing editor to the study that also found as work load increases, so does stress, for the student and their parents. >> all children are getting homework they don't understand. they're getting homework that's really, really stressful. i had a parent who has a ph.d. in science and math and couldn't understand the instructiondz for her third grader's homework. >> reporter: the guidelines recommend a ten-minute rule. ten minutes per night for first graders and ten addi

i'm craig melvin in for thomas roberts. we start with.f the college preseason a few weeks early. trump is in mobile, alabama, site of the senior bowl of 43,000-seat venue where he is expecting a large gathering as part of an initial swing through the deep south. it has some history to it. bear bryant coached his first ever football game for alabama there. tonight, donald trump will be trying to make history himself. the largest crowd yet for the 2016 field. trump of course under fire for among other things his stance on immigration. even one of his iowa co-chairs telling the des moines register, quote, on illegal immigration he wants to gather up the families and ship them out? that was a boondoingle. the caucus goers are like, what? that was a big mistake. today democratic congressman castro appearing on msnbc saying that trump's offensive comments about, quote, anchor baby, for instance will be jeb bush and republicans to a winless season. >> it's not only hurting the republican party with donald trump has done, it's hurting the country

nbc's craig melvin joins us, obviously the irony here is it wasn't the inmates that helped them get out this new information from the new york times, inmates claim that within hours after june's prison break, they were beaten, they were choked, they were slammed against walls by guards in a frantic search for information. the new york times calls it a campaign of retribution. following the three-week man hunt for richard matt and david sweat, the times reports prison guards boused decide toens of inmates while looking for information about the escape. the times quoting two inmates who worked in the prison tailor shop, one says a guard tied a plastic bag around his neck, tightening it until he passed out. the other inmate who supervised the tailor shop says correction's officials put him in solitary confinement for three weeks and threw out most of his belongings, including his family photographs and his wedding ring. following the escape, more than 60 prisoners filed complaints with the prison's legal services, an organization that helps indejt prisons. >> the amount of claims lately an

she was married to melvin douglas, the actor. and she became involved in california politics and was a progressive and began to peek a lot on behalf of democratic candidates. and she won election to the house for a couple of terms in the 1940s. she wasn't a legislature. she wasn't introducing a lot of bills. she wasn't a legislative entrepreneur. but she was a spokesperson for issues. she would come on the floor and talk about improving housing, african-american civil rights. so she was known as a great speech maker. here's a campaign bill or poster which advertises speaking engagement that douglas made in 1948. it happens in oakland, which is far from her district. so you get the sense that she was on the speaking circuit a lot, speaking for democratic candidates and democratic issues. she serves a couple terms in the house. in the early 1950s she decides to run for the u.s. senate. she goes through the democratic primary. and one of the candidates she ran against described her as being a sympathizer, red sympathizer, which was
