i am new to memphis. that is where i make my home and where i do my work. i feel like there is a few things we have not touched on. that is the system that allows this racism and these things to be perpetuated that these monuments are only a symbol of. i have an issue with saying we should have these discussions and not dealing with the issue on the ground. i have an issue with invoking stuff on clark -- stephon clark and saying black bodies are not valued as human beings, us glossing on jumping to the confederate conversation without really dwelling in that space. it is important as historians. we are here to make connections between past and present. in my position at the national civil rights museum, i get to do that every day. but those of you who are more academic scholars have really take some time and look at that. i worked on memorializing the memphis massacre of 1866, but that memorialization happened before shootings in baton rouge and in other areas and before activists in memphis closed down i-40. there is a direct tie between people making stat

the memphis model requires 20% of training. we're about 46-47% of training.and the chief's goal is to continue to train. our goal is to train the entire department. so looking at 3-4 years to get everybody trained on the 40 hours. now, fort 20 hours, for the 10 hours use of force and the 10 hours of tactical de-escalation, we started that training back in february of last year. right now, we have 1600 officers trained in that. to me, that was very important training because this is the training that allows the officer to form teams and use de-escalation skills when responding to a person in crisis. so what we've been doing for the last 15 months or so, is having classes twice, sometimes three times a week with the officers. the police department has 2200, it doesn't lose everybody in the police department, so we're 1600. so i'm very optimistic that we'll be done before the end of the year on doing the tactical training. i can see the difference on the streets. i can hear the officers on the radio responding to crisis and asking for resources before they get t
