memphis strike was at a crossroads in the period of the american civil rights story. 1968 memphis wasty, more moderate than other areas in the deep south. memphis was considered the mid-south right on the banks of the mississippi. african-americans and whites still lived in a pretty decisive and divisive segregated community. african-american sanitation workers did not make the same as their white counterparts, so there was a great amount of tension going on in the city of memphis at the turn of the year 1968. the workforce of the sanitation workers in 1960 eight memphis were about 70% african-american and 30% white. sanitation workers that were african-american only made about one dollar an hour. you could be fired for being late to work after one minute. you had no pension. you were given no other grievances during this period. you were not able to be a driver on a truck. you were only able to ride in the back of the cab. sanitation workers to the job because they felt it was going to be a steady job to have during this period. if you worked 90 hours a week as an african-american sa

himself had come to memphis to stand in solidarity with the workers. over 25000 people gathered to hear him speak, the longest largest indoor gathering and it was right there in my own backyard across tennessee, mississippi border. i do not dare ask my mother if i could skip school but you better believe the message of martin luther king jr. was felt that the area like an earthquake. he promised to return to memphis a few days later to lead a peaceful and nonviolent protest through the city. on the day of the scheduled protest a large snowfall blanketed the city which delayed his travel. however, on the rescheduled date march 28 an estimated 22000 students skipped school to demonstrate in a crowd erupted into violence. though they tried to call up the devastation it was too late. they broke into downtown shots and police shot and killed a 16 -year-old boy and to make matters worse police followed demonstrators into a church sanctuary where they released teargas and the mayor declared martial law as 4000 national troops flooded the city and normally my

i was running in midtown memphis which is and historic part of memphis it must be three or four years ago wondering whether to write another book and reflecting on some of what i witnessed at the cia particularly during that excruciating time after 9/11 and realizing some of my colleagues many of whom are friends had written their stories but many of the people that i worked with would never speak, would never write in their stories would never be told as no one talked to them, put their stories together in one simple narrative and explained what happened. so i decided that morning running my five miles in midtown memphis i would do that. this is mostly their story. not a history. it's not every document that ever appeared related to what we call the program detention and interrogation. it's a story of men and women that i served with that decided to speak with me because they trusted me. step back in time with me. we are going into the time machine. you go back to the 1990s a lot of my colleagues talk about the time and to paraphrase one of them when we thought we had killed the drag
