[ applause ] >> thank you. when anna invited me on the program, you know, i asked her if i should give a talk. she said how about an interpretive dance. so i'll now start my interpretive dance. no. just kidding. actually, funny that she mentioned all the various things i've been involved in over the years. they actually are all connected. i'll try 20 show you that in the talk. the title of the talk is the title of the reissued book as anna mentioned. you might call the unofficial title confessions of a monitor nerd, because i want to talk a little bit about the book was originally published in the year 2000. and i want to talk a little bit about what that history looked like when i first started working on it, and then what has happened in the last ten years, which is what the new parts of the book are just a little bit about, and a lot of what has happened with the monitor in the last ten years has been right here by people in this room. so i started working on this project in 1992. and it was not by coinciden

. >> i wanted to s mend u aboutel pl -- to ask you about mendel plaza. the themes that is a hot spot for some kind of activity we may not want. or their ideas the you could share with us? >> we could speak for hours about it, it has been on the front burner. these suggestions are the same from the folks that we get at the opera house, those in various institutions along oakdale, george carver, all the same. they want the violence to stop, they want visible police presence. we're doing some plainclothes work. rodney fitzpatrick is out there every day and working in that area. supervisor cohen is working on this. malia an d [unintelligible] there are a whole number of suggestions. we have removed the benches, increasing lighting, working with dpw, public utilities, mta. everyone is working on making it safer. dbi, supervisor cohen is whispering in my ear. code abatement, issues with liquor stores. there is a multi-city department effort. we have the arts commission that i met with for an hour, suggesting what they are doing at the opera house and the plaza

option number two, is a half block away from mendel plaza which is ground zero from homicide. not very far from my house. it's the 50-year-old girl was shot right here and where the ken harding shootout happened. it was right here. so these are not ok options at all. and i'm offended frankly that these are the options that you're providing for us. i expect that we would be treated the way we were told we would be treated for months. every single school told us the same thing. find the best fit for your child. we did that. we submitted an application with 10 choices and apparently none of those 10 are acceptable for my daughter. i urge you to change course and do the right thing. [applause] >> good evening, my name is tony wilson. i'm the father of a 4-year-old child who will turn 5 in november. i want to talk about the transitional kindergarten program. i mean, i read is sfusc mission statement. what stood out to me is the access and equity. i fail to understand how the kindergarten program presented as the only option for all of these kids is either accessible or equitable. t

wonderful people who live here want mendell plaza to be more successful, the bayview opera house. we open up a couple other storefronts along third street. we're going to continue doing that with the personal investments that people are making on housing. i want to continue thanking the former commissioners of our redevelopment agency. leroy king is here today. along with commissioner dar. thank you.
