a supervisor mendelman joins us live now to talk about this pretty big issue for the city supervisor. thanks for your time. sure >> good to be here. >> all right. so you've sent this letter to the police department to learn the underlying issues. have they responded to you yet? what have you learned? >> yeah. so we and the board of supervisors has been looking at this issue for as long as i've been on the board, probably longer. and it just gets worse and worse every time we look at these stats. it looks like enforcement has gone down further so that, as you pointed out, it's down like 97. so we asked back in may, we sent a letter to the police department asking them to, one, explain to us what's going on and what are the reasons for this. and two, give us a plan to get back to 2014 levels of traffic enforcement. and they did respond and their response was interesting. one thing they pointed to was the just the decline in overall staffing within in the department. they are extremely understaffed. they're down more than 500 officers. it's a huge problem for the city and it's impacting

so yesterday here on getting answers, we had san francisco supervisor rafael mendelman on. he you know, we were talking about the number of traffic citations really dropping by 97% in san francisco over eight years. last year, i think they averaged ten stops a day in the city this large and that being a possible cause of flagrant disregard for traffic laws. let's listen to what he said. >> the changes around burden for each officer who does a traffic stop so that whereas ten years ago a traffic stop might have been a 3 to 5 minute exercise with all the paperwork that may be involved at this point, it may be a 20 to 30 minute exercise. >> look, i know that is outside of the scope of this particular store of yours. right. so i'm not going to ask you unless you happen to know how it could be streamlined, the collection of the data. but i am wondering if you've encountered people who said maybe we do need that racial data. right. we do need to monitor whether there is racial profiling, but maybe there's some alternative ways to do it that are maybe more reliable or time efficie

on thursday, supervisor raphael mendelman is also planning to hold a hearing on sfpd traffic enforcement. so guys, plenty of opportunities to raise those concerns. next week . something needs to change. jack, thank you. in san jose now , pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car. the crash happened just after 1030 this morning on fruitdale avenue near south bascom avenue. sky fox was at the scene after the collision shows a white car there with its front bumper damaged and investigators looking at a motorized scooter in the street. it is unclear if the victim was riding that scooter. police did not release any other information about this crash. the oakland city council unanimously passed a resolution this week to help deter violence among youth. it authorizes nearly $30 million in grant money to be used to provide violence prevention and intervention services to youth over the next two years. earlier tonight, we spoke with longtime oakland city council member noel gayo about how this money could help with oakland's increase in crime. we've been through this before. you know, i've b
