redwood valley in mendocino was devastated last year by another deadly fire. kqed's investigation found problems with evacuation orders and communications in that case. how havear things co this year? has it been a better situation? >> the fires in the fall were terrifying because they started in the middle of the night in a fairly rural community that is populatd, but people weren't able to get out quickly or be notified in time. i think one significant difference this year is that most of the evacuations have happened during the day. people are a lot more alert and aware about how to receive emergency evacuations, and t local agencies have been really doing a good job about trying to get that information out to everyone as quickly as possible. there has beenif a but people remain onr edge afhe rrncident. >> y, second year in a row. brandon, you conduct research on forest management, study these things. and i know in politics, there's talk in sacramento in recent weeks around issues like fir suppression and the history and how that's sort of fueling these big

the mendocino complex fire is threatening three counties tonight, mendocino, lake and now colusa countytoday reached 290,000 acres and is just 34% contained. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is live in colusa county, one of the new counties under alert tonight. >> reporter: they have never had a fire threa been scary. take a look at just how smoky it is out here in colusa county. that's because the fire is burning just west of here. one resident told me it has been crazy to say the least. we are near the town of leesville where the fire got so close it prompted evacuations over the last couple of days. as you mentioned, the mendocino complex fire has charred 290,000 acres, making it the large est fire in california history. it is now bigger than new york city. there are mandatory evacuations in lake, mendocino and now colusa counties. the fire is berning near stoney ford. residents say they have never experienced anything like this. >> we've all been affected about it. our small town has been affected abo by it. my prayers right now are with the firefighters. >> reporter: and we are back h

breezy conditions definitely won't help firefighters battling the mendocino complex fires. mike, it just went into effect, right? >> just started at 11:00. we expect those conditions to ramp up and be critical for quite a time frame across parts of the state. not only in mendocino county but you can see up near redding and all up and down the sierra. a little closer to home in lake county and they could gust up to 30 miles per hour. so we're talking a 36 hour period of heightened awareness and readiness and that if evacuation orders come you need to go immediately. so you need to be prepared. right now ware just watching the temperatures ramp up. notice the winds are calm just about 5 miles per hour. so in the next couple of hours those are going to start cranking up around 20 to 30 miles per hour, and they get erratic in the valleys and they're going to blow from northwest to southeast. so if you live southeast of these fires you need to be prepared also. >>> firefighters in shasta county say they're making progress. the fire has burned nearly 132,000 acres sense it began
