[cheers and applause] president mendoza paparazzi -- president mendoza: thank you. you are all of the noisemakers. >> i am going to be a junior next year, and i am here to talk about my experience of study. so one thing i like about the studies is it is flexible. when i took it, i got to -- is not really like a mother's love for a class. i was able to take my -- so i have done the one-year of it, so i passed that, and it is also more flexible in terms of what activities you what to do, such as, let's see, col. when i took independent study, i went to the park to the golf course, and i got credit for that, but at lowell, there is no golf course. i cannot take off there. there is swimming and biking, and i still swim every saturday at 2:30. and also, unlike pe, it is more like activities you want to take, activities you want to do, and it is also how hard, how strenuous you want that to be, so when i took independent study, et i was not really limited. president mendoza: i'm going to ask for you to wind up. your time is up, so please wind up. >> please extend the time

president mendoza: commissioner? commissioner: the administration, our jobs are to follow whenever the decisions the board makes, so if the board made this decision, which it did, that in two years it ended, so we had to come and figure out a way to bring it to you and say, "ok, what do you want to do now?" i will tell you we have had discussions with the teaching credentialing. we have the discussions with a lot of people in sacramento. so far, that decision has to be made by the teaching credentialing office. it is not a decision that anyone else really makes. it is made by them. if, indeed, they changed that, then we would probably be coming back to the board to say they had changed their credentialing requirements, and then we bring their consideration to the board. that is pretty much what we would have to do since the amendment is already passed. we would come back, if, indeed, it changed. having this discussion for four years, and whether it changes is anybody's guess, ok? >> can i asked our attorney? i do not

president mendoza: commissioner wynnls. commissioner wyo -- wynns: all of those that teach the art credentials, and i want to thank them for their work. building on what commissioner norton said, i remember when we were talking about the independent study option and try to sort of come up with this seat of our pants, that we had at the time some confusion about whether an independent study option of any kind would require a person credentialed in that subject to teach it. we were a little not clear about the interaction of the new state regulations, which were just coming up the time. also, what subject recovered under no child left behind, etc., because remember that hp happening. we weren't really clear that we were going to say that it had to be a p.e. credentialed teacher. so we need toe be clear about that but at least we need to take that into consideration. even though we passed the amendment. i actually as far as i know and we should do some investigation, i think before we make such requirements because this is the

president mendoza: comments from the deputy superintendents or the board? deputy superintendent lee. >> for folks who were not at the meeting last week, there was a discussion that all the commissioners had around the process issue, which commissioner fewer alluded to a minute ago, indirectly. after the budget is adopted, after the details of the state budget are better understood, we may or may not be on the brink of a clearer picture. i can comment on that tonight, on the latest news from sacramento, if that would be of interest to the board. but the process that we walked away from last week, understanding that the commissioners had in mind, is that after the state budget is better understood, but before the beginning of the school year, there could be a discussion where the board would talk about possible adjustments to the budget, reconsideration of different items. i did circulate a list of the items, some of which were discussed last night and some of which commissioners have contacted me about since last tuesday to put into that parking lot list. th

commissioner mendoza has to leave early. any clarify questions? anybody? no? i have some questions about the simulations, which are very interesting, and to refer back. so i asked some questions -- these questions give me some -- these simulations were done with the current year data, that being the only data we have, i presume, so it shows about 100 students, ctip tie-breaker schools will apply to presidio and another, and they did not get in. can you explain that? >> the total requests, or all requests, and whether they are rated number one or -- commissioner: this is the only data i have. but this is what you have given me. this is how many requests that were admitted under the current tiebreakers and would be under the two proposed tiebreakers. >> yes, so in the data from the last meeting, it shows all requests, so the reason that the numbers are so much smaller on the simulations is because there were only 600 -- exactly. it commissioner: can you give us on duplicated -- what i want to know, and this

commissioner: commissioner mendoza?commissioner mendoza: i think this makes more sense than anything i have heard in a while. if this is what we had out there, i think the conversation would have been a little bit different than what it is. this will always be very personal. as your child goes through this experience, it is very personal, and if you read a fourth grader, you are feeling really anxious, and if you're the fifth great parent who was banking on the feeder pattern to start to kick in this year, and it did not, you are pissed, and this speaks to so much of what we have been talking about for a long time. if you like your neighborhood and where your kid is at, you are going to support neighborhood schools. this is why we left high school the way that we did. and i always feel a little jaded around this because my kids went to schools that no one wanted to go to, and i was part of public schools for half of my life, it feels like, and that will conversation was about going in and taking charge of your school an

president mendoza: can you tell us what some of those are gray? >> there is no muni transfer required, and it is less than 3.5 miles from school. so we would want this transportation to be in place the first time this choice process was used so that families would be able to avail of that. the next element i was going to talk about are the tiebreakers, so this table here shows the tiebreakers, and i think it is important to remind everyone that the superintendent's recommendation is still a choice process, and it would be a choice process for the next number of years, and that gives an opportunity to roll out all of the initiatives that they are planning for the middle schools, so in march, the tiebreakers were assembling and then random, and the recommendation of the superintendent is to add a feeder tie-breaker and to put it immediately following siblings, and then at the last board meeting, based on some suggestions based on the community, to look at swaping the order, and that is what number three is, the simulation putting it above the feeder
