weather officials say meranti is approaching mainland china. they are bracing for the storm. fishermen in southern coastal areas are anchoring thundershower boats. jonathan oh has the details on the storm. jonathan, how will the storm impact the region? >> james, it looks like we're still going to be dealing with heavy rainfall and pretty powerful winds as we go throughout the overnight period into thursday. that's when we're keeping -- that's the time period we're expecting for the landfall to take place. and i want to also show you the satellite imagegery for the seven-hour period during the afternoon. this is the reason why. when we first came to you yesterday with this, you were able to see a well defined eye. but now that's not -- is no longer clear. it's clouded up quite a bit because it's weakening and having resistance from the mountains. asas it tries to move towards maininland china, it's going to get that resistance throughout the next several hours. so that's going to hinder it from really being able to keep its intensity together. look at this. wind speeds at 198

weather officials say meranti is moving northward. our meteorologist robert speta joins us now with more on that storm. >> yes, some pretty incredible footage coming out of southern taiwan where they were impacted by this storm system. we had winds gusting at times well over 200 kilometers per hour, plus we're looking at that threat of heavy rainfall still continuing out here. in fact, in total, a few locations have seen about 830 millimeters. now, i do want to mention taiwan because of these high amounts of precipitation. it really squeezed out a lot of that cloud cover and kind of disrupted this storm system because of the mountains. this is satellite imagery from wednesday evening. you can see right here, how that inflow comes in and then as it exits taiwan, you have a little bit of that grayish in the satellite. that is showing us some of the weakening that we experienced with the storm system despite the fact it did not tactically make landfall out here. those mountains still disrupted this. so as it pushed toward the northwest,

let's start with meranti. this is a violent typhoon. it's got a lot of strength with it. you may notice on these frames that the clarity of the eye. now, a lot of times strong storms we can see it on the visible satellite. but when we can see it on the infrared perspective, that is really gaining intensity. and this storm is at 900 hectare pascals. it's gusting up to 306 kilometers per hour. even though the center track at least where it looks like it's going may be between two islands like luzouzon and taiaiwan. ththe northeastern quadrant is expected to go through taiwanan. aa lot of rainfall especially near the islands. some areas could see 300 millimeters in just six hours as this system brushes through. now, there is the fact i have to point out that the eastern coast of taiwan not as populated as the western side. be that as it may, anyone that is located on this side is going to be dealing with a lot of mou moisture slamming up against the mountains. so the rains that fall are going to fall back onto the eastern coast. we are concerned that flooding is going to be
