three routes under consideration are san jose to bakersfield, merced to palmdale, merced to san fernando valley, those last two routes would be taking the train closer to the l.a. basin. if they choose the san jose route getting to san jose from bakersfield five stops. and then bakersfield, that would be a trip that would take under two hours top speeds of 220 miles an hour. high speed rail would not only connect to silicon valley but to san francisco and sacramento. don't forget you have caltrain which travels to the city and amtrak's capital corridor which ends in sacramento. a decision on which route won't be made until next year. the board needs to consider which segment would give them the most bang for their buck. the overall plan for high speed rail in california is 800-mile route, a system that would connect northern california to southern california, san francisco to l.a., top speeds 220 miles an hour. very expensive right now, estimated to cost in the neighborhood of $43 billion. only a fraction of that money is secured. reporting live in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay.

my last recommendation has to do with item 11 on your agenda today, the park merced issue. the c.a.c. has had a presentation about the transportation plan and development agreement of at park merced, including the realignment of the m oceanview. it is our recommendation that this board adopt the transportation plan and development agreement. at least as presented to the c.a.c. on june 2. i can't comment, obviously, on any changes that might have occurred since then. it would be very easy to just look at this and say, well, we just have more people there, so we have to find a way to ship more people around and deal with increased traffic from there. but what you have instead is a really comprehensive transportation plan for that site, something that integrates a lot of principles of good planning and urbanism, and we were very impressed with that and we think that this plan represents a very positive step forward. some of the feedback we got about the m oceanview was the people in the o.m.i. very much value the trip they have to the west portal commercial district. we were p
