that's a big headache for patients pretty important drug for merck. for this drug are over $3 billion annually here's the important point when we think about this drug, we think the duration of sales probably aren't going to be as long as some of its cancer drugs that look really well positioned and largely due to the likely scenario we'll see increased vaccine utilization and probably see less covid cases as we get into sort of that 2024 time period and beyond, but nevertheless, in the near term, a nice shot in the arm for merck. >> yeah. so to speak, of course, but this you take orally. you know, i do wonder in speaking to the founders of ridgeback on friday, there is at least the hope, if not an expectation, there may be broader usage for this drug. it may not just be covid-19 that we're talking about, but any number of other coronaviruses or even flus. is that at all part of your model? >> where you know, that's really upside there's upside not only in the current covid case where this drug could be used more in a preventative setting and we'll ge

merck is likely to be just the first.oline: the mental image of it being available in any pharmacy, it cost a lot of money. how will be -- they be able to square the circle? merck it is on -- robert: it is unclear what the market will look like in the long term. that cost is not a commercial cost, that is what the u.s. government is paying for the first initial batch of doses, $1.2 billion in supply, one point 7 million courses. in the long term, the commercial product is not, it is not clear how that will work but at that price, if it stays the same in the commercial market long-term, that could inhibit broader use. there are others coming out potentially. we are waiting results from a pfizer pill that they are testing in large-scale trials. there are others that could come soon and this could be the first. it could be a significant new market. right now, this merck pill was tested in unvaccinated patients with the potential for the broader market long-term. you could use this as a prophylactic if someone gets sick in yo

how is this new one from merck different?ink one of the biggest things is remdesivir is an i.v. whereas this is oral. taking two pills a day for five days you can do this at home. do this in many places around the world. when it comes to some of the medications like remdesivir and monoclonal antibodies, they aren't available in many places around the world because they require you to get the infusion. so i think access is one of the biggest differences here. if you look at the data on remdesivir as well, it's not -- didn't look as promising as what we're seeing here. remdesivir, it wasn't clear it prevented death. may have prevented severe illness and likely hospitalization but didn't prevent people from dying. >> dr. gupta's new book is "world war c -- lessons from the pandemic and how to prepare for the next one." it comes out next tuesday. dr. sanjay gupta, thank you. >>> clean up. the vice president's office trying to contain the outrage over a smear of israel that the vice president did not correct. now de tractors say i

let's start with this pill from merck.ork and how is it different from existing treatments like, say, regeneron or remdesivir? >> it's certainly similar, geoff, to how you would use the monoclonal antibody. in other words you would get the monoclonal antibodies if you start having symptoms, it seems to work very early in the course of illness when the virus are replicating. it's the same for this drug. the important game changer is this drug, the new pill from merck, is just that, it's a pill. you take it twice a day for five days as opposed to having to go to -- find an infusion center where you would have to get an intravenous administration of the monoclonal antibodies. so it will be much more accessible. and so i think that's really important. i think the key, geoff, is to not try to pitch this as a replacement for vaccination. that's going to be the key message, because yes, it is decreasing hospitalization by 50%. so it is a benefit. but in comparison to a vaccine, it's a modest benefit. so the key is making certain
