this week, martha ackmann discusses "the mercury 13." the true story of 13 women and the dream of spaceflight, an account of the women pilots who attempted to become america's first female astronauts in the 19 skis. the women passed the same tests as the mercury 7 astronauts, yet they were not selected 94 missions. this program is 40 minutes. to the odyssey bookshop. it's my pleasure tonight to be introducing to you martha ackman, and we are launching her extraordinary book, "the mercury 13: the untold story of 13 american women and the dream of space flight." martha ackman is associate professor of women's studies at mount jolla college as well as a journalist whose articles have appeared in the "new york times," the "boston globe," the "chicago tribune" and the "los angeles times." in 1961, just as nasa launched its first man into space, 13 women underwent secret testing in hopes of becoming america's first female astronauts. they passed the same battery of tests at the legendary lovelace foundation as did the mercury 7 astronauts, but

mercury. mercury is 13.6 times as dense as water. that means the column of mercury would only have to be 1/13.6 as high. and 1/13.6 of 10.3 meters turns out to be 0.76 meters, turns out to be 76 centimeters, turns out to be 760 millimeters. and so when you're talking about atmospheric pressure in terms of millimeters of mercury that's what you're talking about. see because if you look at the-- if you have like-- all you have to do is take a dish of mercury and that mercury will glug right out there and when that mercury column... is 760 millimeters tall, it's about like this, huh, okay? when it's that tall, that's going to push down on the surface with just as much pressure as the atmosphere outside and so it'll stand right there. now let me ask you this commonsense question. what if the atmospheric pressure increases, what's going to happen to the mercury? it's gonna push it right up further, isn't it? it's going to push it up further until it's pushing down with the same pressure that the atmospheric pressure is exerting, isn't tha

13," that's the mercury 14 and 15. these people know the story as well as i do. i thank you very much for being here. as joan said, this is the story of 13 accomplished women pilots who were secretly tested for astronaut viability in 1960 and '61. they were the top of the heat among american women pilots. some were champions in air races. others set aviation world records for altitude and long distance flying. like most women who tried to get jobs as pilots in the 1960s, it was a very rough go. so many of these women while they were spending their weekends breaking world records, 9:00 to 5:00 monday through friday they worked as third grade teachers in akron, ohio or journalists in oakland. some who were lucky enough to earn their living as pilots had to patch together jobs. some found themselves getting planes off the runway as charter pilots and announcing to the passengers this is your captain speaking. when a female voice came on, some passengers were not so happy they were heading off to lift off with a female pil

there wasn't people advocating mercury 13. the response largely as the next year or so went on because of randy lovelace's death. so it was -- tereshkova was dismissed. it wasn't until the hard work of the feminist movement of the 1970s as well as the civil rights movement that i think finally began to open the doors in 1978 for the first class of women astronauts. >> women astronauts in russia encounter the same obstacles? did they have to fight as hard? >> the first class? they were a minority among a larger group of women. interestingly when i interviewed eileen collins not part of that first class but a current astronaut and talked to her about what kind of exams, physical and medical exams we took, she said the exams we have are nothing like the exams these people went through. in part because our knowledge of space in those years was very minimal, so everything was tested. as far as discrimination and obstacles, yes, i think there certainly was some. there's an editorial cartoon in the book about sally ride where reporte
