and now in her very first interview, meriam ibrahim. >> meriam, it is wonderful to see you here. >> translator happy to be here with you. >> you were three weeks pregnant with a little girl. you had a baby boy who was just over a year old when you were first jailed in january of 2014. what went through your mind in that prison cell? >> translator: the situation was difficult, but i was sure that god would standby my side. i relied only on my faith and i knew god would stand by me at any time in any situation. >> within six weeks you were found guilty of these charges. did they give you the chance to renounce your christian faith? >> translator: i was given three days. in addition to that while i was in prison some people came to visit me from the muslim scholars association. these were imams that created an intervention by citing parts of the quran for me. i faced a tremendous amount of pressure. >> and yet you refused. you were pregnant. you had a little baby boy in that prison cell with you. how difficult was it to stand by your faith under those circumstances? >> translator: i had my trust

abroad, this conference is particularly blessed to welcome in our midst an extraordinary hero, meriam ibrahimtin and her little baby girl, maya, and her husband daniel backstage. what an incredible peace and joy radiates from meriam. a young wife, a young mother, imprisoned, thrown into a pit, giving birth to her daughter with her legs in leg irons. sentenced by a cruel and oppressive government to receive 100 lashes and then to hang by the neck till dead. for the crime of being a christian. and the government of sudan told meriam, if you will only renounce jesus we will spare you this terrible fate. and meriam looked at her captors and she said, i can not, and i will not renounce christ. [applause] how many of us have ever had our faith tested like that? how many of us have face ad question like that? if you start to feel hope and despair for what is happening in this country, remember that prison cell in sudan. i asked meriam just a few minutes ago, in the dark of it all, how did you not lose faith? how did you not give up hope? and she responded very simply. she said, god was with me. anyo

now, if it hadn't been for just seeing what meriam ibrahim was facing and knowing that was going on and seeing the beautiful picture of her and just a few of us finding out about it, she would be right now still hanging up for display. this is what's happening. at love people out there are saying, well, you know, isis is a very serious thing but this isn't our problem. yeah, it is. i can remember three months ago i made a statement that isis is a threat to our homeland and people just didn't believe that that was the case. and there is a poll that came out yesterday that i thought i had with me and i don't but the poll shows that 71% -- this is an abc poll, 71% of the american people believe that isis is a direct threat to the homeland of the united states of america. that's 71% of the people. they also believe the same 71% of the people that our president does not have a strategy to win this war. so tonight we're hoping to hear something that is out of character for him, it's something strong, that's going to allow us to win the war. but let me wind up by welcoming those well over a th

in sudan, meriam ibrahim is on the run, but i understand she may be here today. is that right? or her beliefs, she was sentenced to death by the muslim courts of sudan. meriam was raised by a christian mother and married a christian man. at the time of her arrest, she had a young son and was pregnant with another -- because meriam's father was muslim, though, islamic law considers meriam and her son to be muslim. so when she was arrested, meriam and her young son were taken to prison. meriam was forced to give birth in prison, shackled to the floor. when meriam's muslim brother was asked about her sentence, he replied, if she repents and returns to our islamic faith, then we are a family, but if she refuses, she should be executed. after her conviction, meriam was given a chance to recant her christianity and save her life. she refused, declaring, i am a christian, and i will remain a christian. that's true bravery.
