i wuc talks with senator merkley. where does this complicated calculus stand today?, kasie, and the white house dispatching three aides to capitol hill this morning with the idea of trying to wrap up some agreement or trying to get a better handle on whether there is an agreement, these three white house aides include brew shety, terrell, and deese. and they're really trying to figure out if this bipartisan group has any chance. they suggest they do have a chance, but, again, putting this in legislative language is quite tough. and, frankly, a lot of democrats are starting to wonder why they're giving so much time, and that's a legitimate question because the white house is saying they're not going to continue to give it unlimited time as they continue to give it unlimited time. joe biden clearly wants some sort of agreement here. i would say they're probably closer than a lot of people think. but, again, getting this into legislative language is quite difficult, and there's a lot of anxiety on the left, and there will continue to be. we're getting toward the end of

but the point is that i'm not giving up, and senator warnock is not giving up, nor is senator merkley. we are not giving up. and i favor abolishing the filibuster. and i came to that decision after years of inaction, after seeing how important legislation on things like climate change, immigration reform, things where there was bipartisan agreement got stopped because of archaic procedure. and i don't think our colleagues should be able to tyrannize us and the country and hold the country hostage. i don't think you should be able to filibuster our democracy. that's what i believe. of course, yes, we have to convince our colleagues to make changes. they've been open to reform. you've heard senator manchin talk about the standing filibuster, and we can proceed that way, and we can also put pressure on republicans. but the point is there are so many provisions in this bill, including, by the way, the disclose act to go after dark money in our politics. that is overwhelmingly popular. and i would like to see my colleagues on the other side vote against that or my honest ads act which simp

jeff merkley said there's no guarantee of success but senate democrats have a plan. he said they'll quickly negotiate a new voting rights bill centered on manchin's plan that all 50 democrats back and see if any, much less ten republicans will sign on. my guess is no republicans will sign on to that. let me let y'all know in advance they aren't. >> that's why people watch your show, joy. that's why they watch your show. >> absolutely. but shouldn't senator manchin and senator sinema, i don't know if they're on your committee. are they going to go on this trip? it seems to me that it might be helpful for them to hear from the people you're going to hear from. >> let's step back about the manchin proposal. first of all, what we voted on yesterday was to move to a debate on the bill. he's done some good faith work and i know stacey has told you about this, including now considering including same-day registration in his proposal along with the early voting, the 15 days of early voting and a number of other things. there's clearly still language that has to be worked out

. >> senator merkley, grateful for your time today. >>> and with me to share reporting, there is a lot of value here about what went wrong and there's a lot that's glossed over or ignored when it comes to the role of trump or even using the word insurrection. so let's go through some of the issues. number one is the senator says he's convinced there will be bipartisan legislation, i mean, to fix some of the problems. if you look at these social media posts, anyone going arm needs to be mentally prepared to draw down, let them shoot first but make sure they know what happens if they do. bring guns, it's now or never. if a million patriots line up bristling with ar's, how brave do you think -- the warnings were all there. agency "a" is not sharing with agency "b," lieutenant "a" was not moving it up the chain of command. do they have a sense of what to do? >> well, i mean, look, part of the problem here is that just like in 9/11 there were fundamental institutional breakdowns in the national security apparatus of this country. but the difference now is that the people who are being blame

are a bunch of the more liberal members of chuck schumer's caucus, ed markey, bernie sanders, jeff merkleyho have said, wait, wait, we're going to do this bipartisan thing and all the traditional roads and bridges and locks and dams with the promise sort of kind of that we're going to get to the stuff that we want to do on climate change and taxing the rich, they're very hesitant. ed mark ey has been running around with that thick boston accent, no climate, no deal. >> no climate, no deal. >> sorry, i'm from philly, i can't get the boston accent. >> it's 60 minus 20, before you get to the house, right? >> part of this is, they want the democratic senators at issue here, manchin and sinema to sign essentially in blood that if we do this bipartisan deal you will be with us when we do something else. manu raju is reporting that senator sanders is working on a $6 trillion follow-up package, expansion of medicare, prescription drugs in there, climate issues, might put immigration issues in this. so essentially what the progressives are saying, is we'll -- we're just talking about the senate. th

joining us now a lead sponsor of the bill senator jeff merkley democrat of oregon. appreciate you being with us. there is very little mystery on how the vote to advance debate on this act is going to go tomorrow. even if democrats are able to get senator manchin on board and vote in unison you still won't break a filibuster. what do you and other democrats hope to accomplish with the vote? >> we hope tomorrow we'll see that the democrats and independents are united. 50 senators saying this should be on the floor being debated and we are hopeful that maybe a couple republicans will pobl u part with mitch mcconnell and say they, too, want to defend the constitution. they, too, don't think billionaires should buy elections. that we should have a debate on this. they, too, want to defend the right to vote and end gerrymandering. we are not expecting that but just to have this vote tomorrow is to start kind of this accelerated, intensive process of saying if we're going to save the vision of our constitution we really have to get these national election standards in plac

chairman merkley, the impacts from the 2020 fires -- we had significant impacts from hurricanes as well in the southeast. we have tracked -- were always ready for the questions when asked of where the impacts. we have all of that data. you know, without supplemental funds we are quite frankly real prioritizing or appropriating funds to get the most critical hazardous fuel -- hazardous trees and recovery down where we can. >> i heard that magic word, supplemental. and i think that that is something very important for the senate to take a look at as hazardous supplemental funds to address those backlogs of unfunded restoration projects. is that something that the administration can support? >> senator, but i can say is that we can give you the effects on the ground and what is needed to get the right restoration. i absolutely can't say that with -- affirmatively. >> thank you. i want to turn to the importance of research in the forests. just thinking about things that are going on in oregon, we have invasive water borne... pathogen. that is killing oak trees and can have a big impact on o
