today we're looking at what we call the merle press, that was our letterpress was brought to indian territory in the late 19th century. the story behind the press is a fascinating one, it's a touching one. it's one that gives a reason for why it is such a prominent location where all our students apply. it began with a repressed from mercer university with a student named joseph morrow had considered coming to the indian territory. he was sent as a missionary by the rehobeth association of baptist churches in georgia in 1857. the very next month he was married and the next month after that he arrivedin indian territory , a 45 day journey on a stagecoach and riverboat and arrived ready to undertake his work. soon thereafter though, is a life was transformed when he saw an experience in the hospitality of americans. he was so touched by how they cared for him, by their generosity that the next 70 years of his life was given to advocating for their well-being and benefit. he advocated for them in front of congress, advocated in print and in front of his wife and with every resource that he had.
